New poster, long-time lurker.
(Abbreviations expanded in postscript for any fellow newbs who might not know them.)
My first sub sim was Silent Service, which I bought on both my Commodore 64 and later for my Amiga. Recently, I've been playing SH3/GWX an awful lot, though I also have SH4/TMO and just tried SH4/OM.
Note: in the following paragraph, I am not attempting to start an off-topic debate in this part of the forum, just discussing what's on my mind right now vis-a-vis sub sims. Because I realize that the paragraph might provoke such a response, I wonder if perhaps the best thing would be for you to open a topic where it belongs and post a link up here. I'll see your response and follow you over to the new thread to read your post. That way we won't go down the rabbit hole of in-depth discussions of SH5 or OM, such discussions I am guessing being considered as belonging in different forums than this one.
I've been thinking about whether I want Silent Hunter 5 (with mods of course). I like SH3/GWX a lot, but there are a couple things I like about SH5, and a lot of things... I'm really not sure about. My first play session with OM was a bit frustrating since I didn't encounter a single ship. Now, that may be bad luck, or it may be realism built into the mod. The correct degree of realism differs for each player, but I do hope OM doesn't have this few enemy ships to play with. For me, that is not fun. YMMV.
I have benefited enormously from Subsim since I began playing Silent Hunter games. I've downloaded (metric) tonnes of mods, and had dozens of questions definitively answered by the contributors here. I've been thinking of late I really ought to stop lurking, so hello.
I wanted to thank all those who contribute to this community: the administrators of this forum, the people who financially support it, those who answer the difficult questions with aplomb, and the authors of mods big and small who have done so much to make my experience better without demanding anything in return.
And finally, if you'd like to know something about me personally, I am a Canadian male of approximately 40 years, a programmer, and an amateur intellectual.
