I was surprised to find a download entitled Operation Tiger, but more surprised to find that it is described as a 'disasterous british exercise'. It was not, it was an american run, american manned and american planned exercise to practice amphibious landing for D Day. It took place in April 1944.
The US forces gave the screening British Navy ships the wrong radio frequencies whilst the US forces operated radios in 'open speech'. The RN was out in the midst of the English channel, miles away from the exercise - again due to bad comms.
The germans in Cherbourg was listening to the americans in amazement; they could not believe what they were listening too, and despatched a sqn of E Boats to attack the landing ships (LSTS). Over 900 US soldiers were killed, some of which by friendly fire as panicking soldiers on the shore opened fire in 'mad abandon' and at anything!! No british forces were involved.
