As some of you already know, I was fortunate to get one of the limited number of tickets for the visit of the Canadian Lancaster (one of only two flying in the world) VeRA to Durham Tees Valley Airport next Thursday 28th.

Below is the provisional list of events for the day and apart from the Punch & Judy show I must say I'm rather looking forward to it:

Can't wait to see the pics Jim.
My late father was a member of No. 428 Squadron RCAF, part of No. 6 Group RCAF. He was a ground crew member. In June '43 they moved to RAF Middleton St. George, which I believe is now Durham Tees Valley Airport. The squadron's Halifaxs were replaced by the Avro Lancs in mid '44.
If you get up close, give her a little pat for me.:salute:

Just had a phone call from Gollum (Chris) who is one of the aviation gang I travel around with and he reckons VeRA will be rolled out of the hangar very slowly to allow maximum time for photo opportunities and meetings with the flight crew
Rumour has it she may not return to Canada at the end of September but stay till after Christmas to allow the BBMF to carry out work on her (one of the main reasons she is actually here).
I can't find out how many tickets there were but at £10 allowing entry to four people they are a real steal and rumours abound that much larger sums are being offered for those who weren't fortunate enough to get one first time round.

That's great news if true (about her staying until xmas I mean). The longer the better...

Just a rumour atm but even if she does stay I doubt she will be flying, more likely in a hangar/workshop for maintenance.

Hmmm, lucky me don't live far away so I might get a chance to see her up close yet (they have conducted tours, though I'm not sure until when). :)

The day started off with cloudy but bright sunny weather, rain was forecast for later on in the afternoon closer to the scheduled flying display...but more on that later.
First stop was the St George hotel to see the statue and the laying of the wreathes.

On arrival we headed straight for the queue to get on her, that's Chris (the Gollum lookalike :O:) to the right of the tail which shows just how close we were for an early viewing.
http://s13.postimg.org/9z60qqp53/IMG_4281.jpg (http://postimg.org/image/tts2cv4cj/full/)
Media and veterans were allowed/helped on first.
http://s30.postimg.org/uoiblrcvl/IMG_4283.jpg (http://postimg.org/image/izebxslwt/full/)
We were next in line when the Canadian volunteer mechanic announced no public were allowed and a guy accompanying his two kids argued that the show advertising material stipulated there were public access arrangements. He made a call and later replied that public would be allowed to board after VeRA had flown so Chris and I left the queue to what I suspect was the curiosity of some of the three to four hundred behind us who weren't aware of the situation.
This one is in honour of u_crank who asked me to give VeRA a 'pat' for his late father who served as ground crew in the squadron.
If you get up close, give her a little pat for me.

The forecasted bad weather was now on the horizon and the pilot of the 100 Squadron Hawk was heard talking to RAF Scampton, he booked a landing slot and an afternoon tea in the base officers mess....carried out his own pre-flight checks and was soon gone.

Typically, just as the first raindrops appeared from a dark cloudy overcast sky VeRA was pushed out toward the runway to perform a few circuits.

Nice!
I saw the Lanc in the Canadian Air museum in Ottawa a few years back, beautiful plane, always one of my favorites.
For a heavy bomber, it actually looks smaller when you see one in RL.

I tell you, though: there's NOTHING small about the sound of those engines when you stand under the wing...

Any quicker and you'd have lost the prop blur, flying shots with static props (like I always get) are never as good.
Sadly my meeting with the twins wasn't to be, bad weather on the Saturday meant a much re-jigged Sunday and I didn't realise until too late that they'd be at Kirmington some three hours earlier than previously planned and Cleethorpes was cancelled.
Still, I've got the video of VeRA a couple of hundred feet above me, and I've seen BBMF's many, many times over the years.
I was hoping for better lighting conditions so I could raise the shutter speed a little.
What were your settings and what mode were you shooting in? If you shoot in Av mode on the Canon, you can get more control that the auto settings. This way you set the aperture value to get the right exposure time for the shot.
there were only a couple that were a bit blurry but on the whole you've done a sterling job mate. Makes me jealous.:sunny: The take off shot is a cracker!

I was in Tv mode @ 1/125 ISO on auto setting.
I'm always more comfortable with fast pointy things in Sports mode for continuous shooting etc.

I received some newspaper cuttings from Canada this morning. So VERA is back home now; according to these the fuel bill for the overseas visit came to $340,000!
One of the pilots said, "When you do an air display in most places in North America, the crowd claps and cheers. Over there it was silence and tears..."
For those of us who weren't lucky enough to get near to her... thanks for the beautiful photos, Jim.
