View Full Version : Getting Bounced by Enemy Aircraft

Hi Sub simmers, I'm quite new to the world of sub Sims and after looking around plumped for SH5, which has really given me the bug (can't get enough !!) especially when modded with Wolves of Steel, the real navigation by TDW and the automation by trevally are outstanding.
Played through the first scenario from Memel no problems, however with the East Coast scenario I'm having great difficulties with enemy Aircraft attacking my sub.
The problem is that as soon as I'm alerted that an aircraft has been sighted, I hit the teleport to the Attack periscope and the icon on the left to dive the sub to periscope depth, but in veritably I get hit before the sub dives, it doesn't seem to matter that the aircraft are spotted at long, medium or short range.
It also does not seem to matter at which game speed I'm using when the aircraft are spotted even when it is set to TC1 the sub just does not seem to have enough time to dive to safety.
Is there a quicker way to get the sub to dive? or is there some other thing I'm doing wrong.

Use a lower TC value - that will give the game 'time' to alert you
If you are using IRAI I made the planes really nasty :D They will fly at high altitudes but when they spot you they drop down close to the sea as they close in on you. Once within range for an attack they will pop up and do their attack. This makes them very hard for your crew to spot at long ranges.
If you are using the latest version of my Generic Patcher the RPM inertia patch will greatly impact your diving times as the shafts of the sub now have inertia and will not accelerate/decelerate at unrealistic rates anymore.
So, in effect, realism has been upped greatly. Welcome to being a Uboat captain :smug:

LesBaker!:Kaleun_Salute: And getting help from the best I see. One additional tip from a veteran:O: of four sub games: stay heavy at 5 to 6 meters when in the zone of the enemy's air cover at all times; it really shortens the crash-dive times.

TDW you are correct in surmising that your IRAI.41 and RPM mods are included with the wolves of steel mega mod which truly change the game from stock.
Using your tip to use a lower TC and Aktungbby to "run heavy" as he says at 6m seems to counter your devious mind in such hostile aircraft by reducing my dive times to 20m by almost 50seconds.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the modders out there that have changed this game from mediocre to the AWSOME game :o that it is today.

are you just using the dive to periscope depth or are u using crash dive?
i maybe wrong but i was under the impression that crash dive gets your sub below the waves faster than just hitting the "dive to periscope depth"

Hi Mooncatt,
I was using the crash dive icon but discovered that their is a 22 second delay that TDWs RPM mod introduces and using the crash dive icon takes you down to a 100m, on the east coast scenario the max depth is about 50m or so.
So I changed to using the periscope depth icon instead to stop bottoming out, now I use the advanced depth control instead and go directly to the depth I want say 20m then once safe from the aircraft attack ascend to periscope depth, as mentioned above when "running Heavy" as Aktungbby says at about 6m the dive time is significantly reduced :) by about 50 sec.

AI is vicious on the EBC.
I only TC4 otherwise there is no time to respond.
I have even been attacked at 21.00 hours before and that is pretty dark.
I stay below during the day.
Not enough time to react if you are on the bridge as every second counts.
Hit the C key to crash dive.
I do not set a depth.
I use the A Key when I want to maintain a depth.

Quick tip for you les, you can manually hobble a crash dives depth by pressing for "hold depth". IIRC It should be in the UI mod you have.
The tactic is call for crash dive, wait for the boat to start its dive then press to hold depth. You get a fast dive time, and don't hit the bottom! Bit of practice and you will have it in no time.

On the other hand this was a real-life problem facing all sub captains operating in shallow water. A normal dive involves filling the tanks to neutral bouyance and using the planes to get to periscope depth. A crash dive involves flooding all the tanks, pumping the onboard water to the forward trim tank and putting the planes on full dive, then blowing the excess out and pumping the trim water to the aft tank. The process usually takes the boat to 70-100 meters before levelling out.
Yes, there are shortcuts, but hardly realistic. If you can live with that, go for it.
