Hi mates!
I have SHIII in my trusty XP rig , but I'm thinking to switch on w8.1 and reding the various issue with w7 I'm wondering if SH 'll run on 8.1....
Since all issue about w7 are older than 9 months and I can't find treads about w8.1 , I'm wondering if:
Anyone managed to make SHIII run on w8.1?
Thanks in advance for your replies!
Maybe you should search for Win8 or windows 8. Version .1 is just a minor detail. Plenty people can play the game in Windows 7 or even Windows 8. It's just that default windows install locations makes modding a pain. Don't let it end up in Program Files if you can.

Like a lot of people I have been running SH3 with Win7 for years with no problems. Judging by the posts here, Win8 is OK too. There have been suggestions that 8.1 might have a problem, but I'd google it to learn more. Aa Pisces says, just don't let the game install to Program Files or Program Files (x86). Anywhere on the root is fine.

I am running win 8.1 0n a HP2000 lap top with 4 gig of ram. I loaded SHIII/GWX and mods with no trouble. SHIII/GWX was loaded into c:// program 86 files. Every thing runs fine but not in full screen.
Good luck.

Is a sad situation that it can't run on full screen....after all this time an official patch was a welcomed THANKS from developers (that are still active moreover) to the purchasers and lovers of this unvaluable sim....
Thanks for your replies!
Is a sad situation that it can't run on full screen......Try setting your screen resolution to a ratio that is 4:3. Or check your background configuration to let your graphics card/chip scale the game to your native resolution.

I run SHIII on Windows 8.1 and it's rock solid. The only fix I needed was setting SH3.exe to run in compatibility mode with Windows XP Service Pack 3.
Also, I've run the game in several forms of fullscreen. 4:3 with blackbars, or 16:9 with Conus' Widescreen mod for example. You need to configure your video card to correctly rescale the game to your liking, if needed.
I actually use Windowed Borderless Gaming (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/WindowedBorderlessGaming#) to run the game in a fullscreen windowed mode so I can mess around on my second monitor without minimizing the game.
In short, SHIII works great on 8.1. Couldn't be happier.

Why is that? Is it simply owing to subsequent modding difficulties or are there other reasons?
I've run it no probs in Windows 8; Program Files (X86)
Also, are the retail expansions worth getting?:salute:

Hi!
I test the game in an external HDD copied from my XP in a netpc with windows 7 Home and initially it give me the 3d error , starting it in 800x600 resolution let the game start but after the initial intro after the red loading bar finish to load the game crash....in a windows 8.1 the game don't load and tell me that the program is for XP - 2000 or so on....
Tomorrow I'll try to install it on a laptop with W8.1 of a friend of mine....
Did you install it correctly in a laptop or in a desktop?

Hi, walter. Mine's a laptop. Let us know how you get on: maybe you should also try installing this using "Compatibility Settings". We can talk about that later if need be...

You can play the game fine while it is in the default install folder in Program Files (with or without (x86)). It's just that when JSGME, or you yourself, need to modify files that are stored somewhere in the Program Files folder, Windows UAC (user account control) needs consent from an administrative user account. (JSGME didn't need to run as an administrator at some previous versions)
Depending on if and how you set up the UAC settings, this may not apply to you. But in default Windows behaviour, even administator accounts (basically the first account created when Windows was installed) need to acknowledge a warning to allow those modifications to files. If your user account is of a generic user type, the UAC blocking window comes up, and if acknowledgement takes too long (like with the game running full screen) the action is denied. In some situations the changes do not even stick, and are only temporary until a reboot of the system. And then people wonder why their mods aren't working anymore.

To prevent future hassle with modding, the easiest solution is to just install the game elsewhere from the beginning, where Windows doesn't care what happens to the files.
C:\games\whatevergame is a good place.
Also, are the retail expansions worth getting?:salute:Not sure what expansions you are talking about. Windows 8 retail, or some sort of SH3 retail expansion (of which I don't know one).
Or does it perhaps contain "Seawolves" in the title. If so then this is a hot loaded topic (robbed mods): http://www.ign.com/boards/threads/silent-hunter-3-expansion-pack.126640280/

Got it working in my friend laptop!
It have the two black bars as the resolution isn't a perfect 4:3....
Any suggestion where I can fnd a mod that get rid of that bars without interefere with the correct running?
BTW also the GWX is working fine now!
Thanks for your help until here!
In the next couple of days I'll try to run the game in my forgotten netpc (a Packard Bell Imax mini 3600) with Windows 7 home installed....
It could be a good compromise solution for money saving....finger crossed please!

Thanks, got all that: the dreaded Administrator again.
As for the expansions I was talking about, I just checked out your link and it was one of those detailed there: 'nuff said and thanks for the heads-up.

Hi again, walter. Glad it came good for you; I don't know whether you'll be able to alter the aspect ratio (if that's what you mean) for sh3 in Windows 8, I believe there are slight difficulties but it's outside my level of knowledge. Maybe someone else could help with this (maybe look again at what Pisces said above).
Meanwhile, are you now going to have to buy your friend's laptop?

Hi mates!
No , I don't need to buy my friend laptop , but since right now he's exploring SH III , maybe we got another fellow in the next days!
This morning I managed to got SH III run on my netpc (a Packard Bell Imax Mini 3600 with W7 Home) with GWX and in full screen too!
Simply set your rig to display a 4:3 resolution so the game engine can adapt the screen to full!
Is always in the game native resolution of 1024X768 but instead of ugly black side bars you have it on full screen!

You're the man, walter! You don't need me to give you any advice, my friend.
Sounds as though you've got your pal hooked...
