Depression is a terrible thing.

Didn't he also pay alimony for like 2 exes?
I think what he payed was huge.
He was on his 3rd marriage.

That can also take the wind out of someone's sails.

I must admit, it took me some time to warm to his style of humour but when i did, i enjoyed every minute of it.

He was a very gifted and talented comedian/actor.

His humour, for me, was natural, what i mean is, not forced or appearing to be just read off a piece of paper.

I think we all wear a mask to some extent. For example except for a close friend or family most people wont mention that they are having a bad day.

Someone with clinical depresson or a person that is bipolar it is a strugle for them. My younger sister is bipolar and she had a lot a trouble for a long time and still dose to some extent.

I think also that Robin Williams has had trouble with drug abuse over the years as well.

You find quite often that the men who make us laugh the most are the saddest behind their mask.

A terrible, terrible shame, he made so many people laugh and smile, and for that we should be grateful.

Thank you Robin, and may you be at rest now.

Decent actor, I liked the gentle flair he gave to the characters he played, and their often silent humor.

When he first appeared on the scene in the late 1970s there was nobody else quite like him - certainly nothing else on prime-time TV in that day was that manic or that meta, spitting out pop culture references like a gleeful machine gun. Modern day comedy owes him a lot.

RIP Robin.

Robin's suicide feels more like a personal loss. Though I didn't actually know him, I had the pleasure of working on his movie "Bicentennial Man" about 15 yrs. ago. Between takes Robin kept us all in stitches. His energy was off the scale, like a force of nature. That was one of the best days I ever had on a film set. I had no idea at the time how much he suffered. That seems to be a very common pattern with comedians.

Oberon
08-12-14, 12:14 PM
That was one of the things I liked about Williams, he could switch from over the top hilarity to seriousness and be great at both. The last thing I saw him in was an episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and that wasn't exactly a comedy series, but he was still absolutely fantastic.
Such a shame that behind that brilliance was such heartache.

You will be missed by a lot of people, Robin, but thank you.

This defiantly a shock to the system this morning at 4:30am before going to work..

So many of us suffer with depression.

I don't talk about mine at all. I never show it but inside I am empty and hurting. It's why I'm antisocial and play so many video games. I can escape reality a while. It's a constant feeling of thinking no one understands you.
Well... I said it I suffer too.
I'm just to embarrassed to go to counseling.

Celebrities who dabble at all with 'substances' I have very little time and thoughts for, and likewise suicide, but Robin Williams has just broken that mould.

Thoughts are with his wife and kids.

Prelim reports from the Coroner's office suggest death was caused by asphyxiation due to hanging.

He was found with acute, superficial cuts to his left wrist and a pocket knife was found next to him.

Toxicology reports won't be available for 2 to 6 weeks.

There has been a massive outpouring of comments and condolences fron the entertainment industry here in Hollywood. I have been watching the extensive coverage on local television and have yet to hear anyone say a negative thing about Robin Williams. There have been a number of interviews with people who knew or worked with him, some relationships spanning 30 or more years. Comedian/actor Christopher Titus spoke of how he had met and spoken with Robin over the years and had seen both the manic and quiet side of his life. He once performed at a benefit with Williams and said he was so awestruck at meeting Robin he began to excitedly tell him how much he admired him, etc. Robin stopped him and quietly said, "Please don't. I'm just like anybody else". Titus said he met Robin again at a later time and Robin was just quietly sitting in a green room. Robin almost always had a book or two with him; that time it was a volume on Einstein and a work by Camus...

There have also been stories of his generosity trowards the troops serving overseas in combat areas. He would do his routine as part of a larger show. After he finished, instead of going to a green room or hanging around with the other celebrities, he would quietly leave the performance site and go out seeking the soldiers who were unable to attend due to their duties. He would greet them and talk and joke with tem so they wouldn't feel left out. A veteran who was at William's star on the Hollywood Wlak of Fame today and who met Robin while serving in the Mideast said he was serving on guard duty when he felt an arm around his shoulders. He turned and pointed his weapon and realized it was Robin Williams. He said Robin threw up his hands and said, "Note to self - never startle a guy on guard duty with a loaded rifle!" When he made those personal visits, there was no fanfare, no cameras, just one decent human being caring for another...

A fellow comedian spoke of a performance he did with Robin at a school in South Central Los Angeles, an inner city area. The auditorium they were in was old and lacked air conditioning. It was very hot and uncomfortable, both for the about 200 students in attendance and the performers. A while after doing the show, the comedian received a call from the principal to thank him for appearing at the school. The principal also told him that Robin had come back to the school after the performance and had donated an air conditioning system to help out the school. The principal said Robin had asked him not to tell anyone about his gift, but the principal felt at least one other person should know about the gesture...

Someone whose name I didn't catch said this about Robin: "He could make everyone laugh, except himself."...

RIP, Robin, and if smiles, laughs, warmth and generosity are credits in the afterlife, you have a very large account, indeed...

He was great in pretty much all of his movies.

Have you seen Awakenings?

Brilliant. Very emotional moments in that film. For me.

I have seen almost every movie with Robin. There's only one I really didn't like Mrs Doubtfire.

I have no favorite as such I think that he played well in most of his movies, as you also mentioned.

@ Pappy55, I know exactly what that is like. All of us need a reason to get out of bed. Some of us need a reason not to kill ourselves. Poor Robin couldn't find one that last night of his life.

People are discussing depression a bit more now; perhaps that's the one good thing to come out of this tragedy. I strongly suspect the ultimate causes are not purely materialistic, i.e. brain chemistry, but intricately bound up with the world we live in, on multiple levels.

It reminds me of Morpheus explaining The Matrix to Neo: "What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad."

I wouldn't call Patch Adams a good movie. I mean, it was based on the real life of Patch Adams... and Patch Adams hated the film.

Still, Robin Williams was pretty good in Patch Adams. He was a great actor, and will be missed. I only became aware of him through comedic reviews of his bad movies (especially Patch Adams), but then I realise that I'd been watching movies he was in for ages!

Hopefully his death will raise awareness of depression. I had it recently (and it was bad enough to make me make several suicide attempts), and it's not nice to go through.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Williams :(

I had it recently Correct me if i'm wrong and i'm certainly not trying to be argumentative in this thread because of bad taste but they tell me depression is never really overcome. You can't cure depression, there are 'outlets' like gaming or hobbies to take a person's mind off depression, Robin was an avid gamer (Legend of Zelda, World of Warcraft), and then of course you have medication.
Depression is always 'there', but it's how you 'cope' with it. Sometimes there are good moments or time periods, and then there are bad stretches.
But it never completely goes away.

(and it was bad enough to make me make several suicide attempts), and it's not nice to go through
Sorry to hear it.
Chin up, good sir. Surround yourself with positive people, a good support base and partake in good 'outlets' :salute:
