View Full Version : No reward for sinkings after patrol

Dear SubSimmers,
First off all, Hello! I've started on SH3 about a week ago, and I'm having a lot of fun with it.
Now, I seem to have run into a bit of a problem, I've just completed my first patrol, jet my log says I've not sunk anything yet, even though I've sunk 4 merchants on my first patrol. In the save games menu, when i acces the captain's log of the 'returned to port' save, it lists my four sinkings. Yet when I load the 'before patrol 2' save, my total tonnage and sinkings are at 0. :wah:
Also, the starting date of my first patrol is listed as 0,0,0, instead of the actual date, december 2nd. The captains log lists the date and sinking correctly, but the patrol log doesn't.
Any clue whats going on here?
I'm currently playing stock SH3, on 29% realism (yes I'm a newbie :03:). Assigned to the 29th in the Med.

I had a similar effect recently.
Finished the 12th patrol with 77,000 tons. Almost the entire convoy. I was totally out of ammo and returned to base. I sailed back part way in a simulated return trip (which I normally never do, but am glad I did), and saved before entering the grid that Brest is in. Then I hit "return to base" from the menu. I get to hand out awards and promotions like they are candy. Start next patrol.
Here's where it goes funny.
The game did not save my file in the same location as it normally does (and did). I quit after saving and went to pick up the game later. My save file was not there on the list. My only options were start from the last mission save (patrol 12 outside the base and have to hand out awards again) or start "in base before mission". But when I tried that it said "cannot load after war". My war was over as of Dec. 1940!
So I tooled around with it for a bit and I found a sort of compromise. I started mission 12 again and ended patrol by sailing back to wilhelmshaven. Then I started another patrol right away, with the goal of getting back to Brest. I did not save the game at any time. I also did not decorate the crew this time either. I got back to Brest and switched fleets, to the 7th out of St.Nazaire, then launched another patrol. I think I let it go to patrol 16 before I saved the game again. It seems to have worked. Even if i go back into the previous save game list, I see patrol #13 as "the war ended" but I continued all the way to #17, it seems to have bypassed the error. I am suspicious that it will fail again somehow so i am wary, but so far everything is holding.
Stock SH3 is playable, but is also badly bugged. Be careful.

Welcome on board!
As it was the first patrol of a career and I suspect you of having upgraded your boat (adding an emblem counts, too) or changed your crew before departure, a common glitch happened which even super-mods couldn't fix.
You should never change a thing on your U-boat before the first patrol or when finishing it, you should hit Escape when you're at least 25 km away from your home base and click on return to port instead of docking.

Thanks guys.
Allievo: Yeah. I did fill up my crew before leaving on the first patrol.
Oh well, started another career (also changed my crew), but this time it went well. My tonnage is counting :)
Did have to bawl out the watch crew after sinking my first coastal merchant this time round. They failed to spot it 'sneaking' up on us, untill it opened fire from about 800 mts away.
Thankfully, I proved to be the better gunner, blowing his gun of with 3 shots (1 miss), and then sinking him with some waterline hits.
Additional questions: Can I change the ammo load for the deckgun?
And, do you guys prefer AP or HE to waterline a ship?

Well if you are firing at the hull, I would use AP to penetrate.
I use HE if I am firing at objects on the desk.
Using the Additional Ammo Mod for GWX as an example (250 deck gun rounds 10.5 and/or 8.8cm...and bear in mind only HE rounds are included with GWX):
http://www.gamefront.com/files/12858...tional_Ammo_7z (http://www.gamefront.com/files/12858187/GWX3_0_Additional_Ammo_7z)
OR change it yourself.
There are TWO sets of values you must change in /SilentHunterIII/data/Cfg/Basic.cfg/
make these values anything you want; 250 and 3000 are the GWX defaults
Located after [Torpedo_Type10] and before
[SUBMARINE_AMMOLIMITS1] ;105mm
MaxAmmoPerSlot=250
[SUBMARINE_AMMOLIMITS2] ;88mm
MaxAmmoPerSlot=250
[SUBMARINE_AMMOLIMITS3] ;37mm
MaxAmmoPerSlot=3000
[SUBMARINE_AMMOLIMITS4] ;20mm
;MaxAmmoPerSlot=3000
MaxAmmoPerSlot=3000
Located further down, after [Conning_Type12] almost at the end of the file
[AMMO_TYPE0];10.5cm SK C/32
Idx=0
Year=1939
Month=1
;AP=40 [COLOR=Yellow]<= these are the stock SH3 default values
;HE=160
;SS=20
AP=0 <= these are the default values in GWX
HE=250
SS=0
Renown=0
[AMMO_TYPE1];8.8cm SK C/35
Idx=1
Year=1939
Month=1
;AP=40 <= these are the stock SH3 default values
;HE=160
;SS=40
AP=0 <= these are the default values in GWX
HE=250
SS=0
Renown=0
[AMMO_TYPE2] thru [AMMO_TYPE10] are for the AA guns. Change values if you wish. GWX default is 3000.
I use a mix of AP to bust open a few targets or for hull hits, and then switch up to HE to do more damage on top of my damage.
I tend to rely on HE against tankers. It's sort of like lobbing firebombs at a gas station, eventually one of them will do enough damage...

I seem to have figured out whats causing this, saving and exiting during a patrol. Had the same thing happen on the 3rd patrol of my 2nd career.
Redid the 3rd patrol from the start in one go, and I did get rewarded that time round.
@Raptor: So theres no ingame ammo choosing?
Thanks for the explanation on how to change these.
Another question: How do I get starshells to burst at the correct distance? I tried putting one above a ship, but it seems to burst much closer (obscuring the target with its glow). Do these light up at a set range?

In-game ammo choices - if any - depend on what - if anything - you changed in the files.
These are the stock SH3 default values. You get 3 types of ammo and can change in-game from one to another. You can always change the types and quantities, but the total shells can not exceed the Max ammo per slot value in the other file (see my original post in this thread).
;AP=40
;HE=160
;SS=40
These are the default values in GWX. You get only HE ammo so there is nothing else available. Again, you can change the quantities - same caveat as above.
AP=0
HE=250
SS=0

Just like real life back then. Sometimes they didn't get credit for sinking something that they knew they did sink. A real realistic sim ain't it?:haha:
At least you found a way to fix it.:rock:

Strange with the Type IX deck gun in GWX I only get 106 or so rounds HE.
