Hello all,

Several years ago, I was quite active in the SubSim community and really enjoyed playing SH4.

I stopped playing right around the time SH5 came out. The past few years have been spent on racing simulations (iRacing)

Today I was telling some co-workers about my Silent Hunter experiences and I think I'm getting the bug to come back and sink some tonnage.

Before leaving, I was playing the Tokyo Maru mod (I think.) I have no idea what's out there and what's good now (SH5 mods or Silent Hunter Online, I presume)

Rather than digging through hundreds of posts, I decided to take the lazy route (hey, I was an Electrician's Mate!) and just ask.

So, where should this old salt go these days to sink some ships?

Well there are many mods for SH5, you might want to start with Wolves of Steel. As for SHO, I haven't actually tried it myself, so I couldn't say much about it. I am sure some one else might be better suited to advise you.

My personal recommendation would be SH3 with GXW, but that's just me.

Personally I'd go right back to playing SH4 it is still an enjoyable game and has lots of options there is an excellent U-boat mod called Operation Monsoon. As well you have Trigger Maru which has likely been improved at bit since you last played not to mention Real Fleet Boat.

If you do not already have you'll want Gold Edition aka the version that comes with both the base game and the U-boat expansion.

Your not missing much with SH5 and SH Online I cant speak for. If you liked SH4 best to go back and play it with the latest version of mods you have played in the past and mods new to you.

Welcome Back!

I can't advise you since I only play SH3.

I'd go back to playing what it was you were playing originally and look around the forums to see what has been released during your absence, then take it from there.

I would gladly play any of my SH-games I have, if I had a computer that could handle the games I have. Can't play SH II anymore on my Vista(have played before but after some windows upgrade... no more) SH III not enough power the same goes for SH IV and SH V.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'm installing SH4 now. I'm wondering how long it will take to re-learn everything I've forgotten. I still have a lot of tutorials and videos I saved so that should help.

Well, I did it. Raised my hand and signed my life over again. :arrgh!:

I just began a tour on the USS Nautilus. First mission was simple and uneventful: Supply drop in Borneo. At least I was able to dust off my navigation skills before getting in any entanglements.

Radio message indicates the Japanese are poised to invade the island. Hopefully I can make their journey a little less comfortable. :stare:

UPDATE: Well, that didn't last long! Shortly after I posted this, I stumbled upon about half of the Japanese Navy in a giant convoy. I was woefully unprepared. In the end, my impatience is what killed me (time compressing when I shouldn't have.) Didn't even get to fire a shot. RIP crew.
