View Full Version : Lolwaffles: Leningrad Cowboys
LENINGRAD 1943

After deducing that the war around Murmansk was unwinnable due to the Soviet Union employing cyborgs in UFOs disguised as Pe-3s and I-16s, the Lolwaffles have moved to Leningrad where new dangers await, that of stalling LaGGs, bridge stunt flying, and Arclights identification ability.

I must admit, the more sensible AI is much more impressive, in my video you'll note that I have what I think is a LaGG (can't really ID it at that distance) curving in to attack at around 7:20 as I pass over the airfield at low altitude, I look forward and then I look back again just in time to see an explosion on the airfield. I can only presume that the LaGG tried to pull a sharp turn to follow me, stalled and went into the deck.
This whole 'stalling to evade' tactic is quite nasty too, although I must admit they recover from it a lot quicker than I do... :hmmm:

The only thing you recover in case of a stall are the bits and pieces of your aircraft, Stallmeister :O:

The second LaGG I was chasing successfully bought enough time with his stall for his friend to come in and turn my cockpit into swiss cheese. Also, I wonder if I could fit into the cockpit in full plate armour... :hmmm:

Maybe you should try something called "gentle control input". You virtually made the plane stall at every turn you tried to take.
Do slow control inputs, don't yank the stick around.
The thing is, I don't yank the stick around, that's what puzzles me, I barely even pull it back. I think I need to screw around with my dead zones.
The thing that gets me is the way the AI recovers from a flat spin in an almost vertical position, almost like someone had cartwheeled it through the air from its wing, it does two rotations and then just levels out again, having lost nearly all its forward momentum but minimal altitude. I know it's Oleg physics, but it makes for a very effective evasive maneuver.

I don't think the dead zones are a problem but maybe you have non linear control inputs (does that make sense in English? I mean you only move the stick a mm and it reacts as if you had yanked it all the way to one side.).

Yeah, that makes sense in English, I'll post a screenshot of my input page in IL2 in a bit, so we can pour over it. :yep:

Mine are exactly like Schroeder's. I guess that's the default since I've not tinkered with them.

Well, before I tinkered with it, I had a lot of problems with stalling, even more so than these days, hence why I gained my nickname :03:
I used this guide (http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Knowledge_Base&op=show&kid=261) on M4T to tweak the settings to try and turn it into less of a stall-fest and noticed an immediate difference, might need to do some more tweaking perhaps though, perhaps alter it to what the author has theirs on.
Not going to be on tonight, so someone be sure to take pictures. :03:

In the absence of the Reichsminister für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda, mission reports have been posthumously compiled by Oberfeldwebel Raptor1.
Mission 2:
Objective: II./JG 5 escort bombers to Orienbaum
Found ourselves in the air escorting the entire Luftwaffe to demolish the poor town of Orienbaum. Following the most brilliantly planned flight path laid out by the OKL, we found ourselves flying over Kronstadt as Soviet aircraft were taking off from the airfield below; LaGG-3s and Stalin Carriers. Having determined these to be vital to the Soviet war effort, we executed a steep dive to engage. Immediately following the start of the engagement, Arclight's cockpit was shot out by long range fire and he was killed. I went after some of the Soviet fighters and, in the course of high speed maneuvering, blacked out. I regained consciousness just high enough above the frozen sea below to snap my wing in an attempt to pull up and subsequently died. Meanwhile, Task Force was engaged by a horde of LaGGs, blacked out and died. HunterICX successfully engaged and destroyed two Stalin Carriers before being damaged by enemy fire. He attempted to bug out but was chased down by enemy aircraft and killed.
OKL Assessment: Vodka shipment stopped. Mission totally successful.
Mission 3:
Objective: II./KG 30 bomb enemy battle tractors in Putilovo
Took off from Siverskaya in overloaded Ju 88s and headed (very slowly) for the target area. En route, we encountered a Soviet train armed with an anti-aircraft gun which expertly shot down one bomber of our squadron. Overhead, enemy fighters engaged our escorts at high altitude. Arriving at the target area, we successfully managed to destroy the bridge north of Putilovo and most wildlife in the area. Enemy tractors were apparently unharmed. Shortly afterwards, HunterICX stalled his aircraft into the ground, killing himself and his gunner, Task Force. On the way back to base, we encountered the Soviet train continuing its advance on our territory near Ulianovka. Going to battle stations, Arclight fired at it with the aeroplane's machine guns while I engaged the train in aerial jousting. The train won. Having lost an engine to the train's gun after successfully failing to deliver damage to it, we bugged out to the nearest airfield and managed to effect an emergency landing.
OKL Assessment: Enemy ground forces utterly destroyed. Mission totally successful. Reports of communist train activity behind friendly lines are overrated.
All photographic evidence of these engagements has been confiscated for security reasons. (Also, I can't take screenshots without crashing the game)

It's also clear to me that the He111 is more suitable for dive bombing then the Ju-88 :hmph:
Also that train, perhaps it's the soviet equivalent of the German Minesweeper? I say in name of the Fatherland we should attempt to destroy it when encountered during a flight.
Mission 4:
Obliterate Soviet armour near a bridge near Leningrad
We took off (and then took off), and then proceeded to find the armour, drop our salvo of SC-500s on them...the KVs and Su-70s laughed at the bombs and carried on.
On the way back to base the Soviet Train (TM) was sighted...
There is no available record to the rest of the mission...

First take-off began well...then Raptor decided to go off to Helsinki by road

Unfortunately for him the evil Soviets had put a town in the way...

Second time around was a bit more aerial in nature. I decide to teach the AI how to formation fly...
http://i.imgur.com/lSriu3h.jpg?1
Then I promptly fall out of the formation whilst looking for my fuel gauge...
http://i.imgur.com/seYT57D.jpg?1
Meanwhile Raptor sneaks up and tries his hand at formation flying
http://i.imgur.com/v6DxvMv.jpg?1
And then a Soviet Hurricane arrives and tries its hand at shooting us down with cannons...it goes unsurprisingly well...

The second mission we all took one He-111 with Hunter piloting, it started out fairly normal...
http://i.imgur.com/nrlJ0n9.jpg?1
Then suddenly got very dramatic as a flight of I-16s bounced us from dead ahead, they curved around and came in quickly from astern
http://i.imgur.com/rpEEt10.jpg?1
We got shot up, but carried on, dumping our bombs on Leningrad before turning back for base, our starboard engine dying mid-route
http://i.imgur.com/CU7ZzOP.jpg?1
The I-16s followed us back but were content to feast on the AI while we made a dash for the airstrip

Indeed, it's a shame that you can't have a dedicated bombardier/fore gunner.
Perhaps one night a week we could have an all in one bomber night, playing something like this:
