View Full Version : Can I play sh3 I'm widescreen?
Hey guys, is there a way to play sh3 in widescreen I've tried the hd mod but It did't work the way I thought there were still oval shaped gauges and I really want to play sh3 so is there a way to play it on a widescreen monitor? Mine is a 21" 1920x1080 monitor.

Hi Avers! From what I understand, there's a few mods you can use. Which one depends on what Super Mod you're using.
For stock SH3 and GWX 3.0: WideScreen GUI for GWX3.0&StockSh3 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166094)
This is the one I use, and it works with GWX 3.0: Conus' SH3GWX Widescreen Mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=170191)
and lastly one that works with NYGM: WideScreen 1920x1080 Project (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=213527)
I can only speak for Conus' Widescreen Mod, but it works great. Note that these will ONLY work at 1360x768 resolution. With some Antialiasing enabled through your video driver it should look pretty good.
I also need to mention I needed to run SH3.exe in compatibility mode with Windows XP Service Pack 3 for the widescreen mod to work. This was with my Windows 8.1 system.
Good luck!
Usually the more popular graphicscard drivers (Nvidia/Ati-AMD )can scale or stretch the 1024x768 output of the game to fit into your 1920x1080 screen. As you got oval shaped results, your settings apparently do not take into account aspect ratio differences. Look for options to maintain aspect ratio (height-width ratio). It should show black bands on the side of the screen and correct circles.
It doesn't improve the resolution of the game itself though. Same still number of pixels in the GUI as far as SH3 is concerned. Might become a bit blurry.
I just tried both of those widescreen mods and the game didn't load a message just pop ups and says could not initialize 3d engine. can I fix that?
specs: power supply: corsair cx 500, graphics card: asus hd 7770 CPU: intel core i5 4670k, RAM: Kingston hyper x 8GB.

@Pisces He could use black bars, but I think he wants the game to use the full real estate of his monitor.
@Avers, I can only think of a couple of things.
Go into your Silent Hunter 3 folder (Example: "SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Silent Hunter 3"), right click on sh3.exe, then go to properties, Compatibility. Where it says Compatibility mode, check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:". Select from the list "Windows XP (Service Pack 3). Hit OK.
Do not run any of these mods alongside the HD mod.
Also, do not run Silent Hunter 3 through Steam. In my experience, I haven't found a way to get a modded SH3 and Steam to play nice together.
And once again, these mods only work with an in-game resolution of 1360x768. You may have to uninstall the mod, open the game and check the settings to make sure it's set to run at 1024x768, then re-install the mod and try again.
Best wishes, Avers!

Both Rubini's and CONUS' widescreen mods default to 1360x768. Lots of graphics cards don't do 1360x768. Instead, they use 1366x768, which is closer to 16:9. Edit the d3d9.ini to 1366x768 and it will run. The 0.4% difference in aspect ratio you won't even notice.

Either oval shapes for circles and no black bands, or black bands with proper circles and scaled to the vertical limit of the screen. You can't fit a 4:3 peg into a 16:9 hole and have every pixel covered.
[EDIT] Ok, there are GUI mods specifically designed to create 1920x1080 or whatever resolution. But those are no GWX anymore. Atleast in terms of the screen realestate.

So what you are saying is that there is no way to play GWX widescreen, because if you mod GWX to play widescreen, it's not GWX any more, because GWX isn't widescreen?
Both Rubini's and CONUS' widescreen mods preserve the look, the feel, the GUI, the campaign, the AI, every aspect of GWX, in a widescreen format. When you use one of these widescreen mods with GWX, which aspects of GWX do you find are missing?
Thanx everyone here. Now I need help with something else. Go see my thread entitled ," having trouble with V16B1 patch kit",

I made a generalisation that they changed the way the various screens look because of the extra screen space. Based in the screenshots I remembered. Therefore not stock GWX. But the difference could be minimal. Certainly the campaign, AI, models and all those good things haven't changed. Just the user interface.
