View Full Version : ship physics just stinks! -.-
hi all. Does anybody know any mod which can impropve ship physics? I mean, ships can accelerate and stop better than a F1 vehicle. They just see an enemy torpedo 6 feet away from them, and then accelerate from 5 to 25kt in less than 10sec..... it's impossible to get any escort like that at long range........ :/\\!! :/\\!!
any ideas?
thanks
I am in TDW and wolves of steel mods

In order to reduce ship acceleration you need to lower engine stopping horse power values in ship's sim file (UnitShip controller)...You can use goblin editor to accomplish this.

You're actually trying to hit escorts at long range?:o
5 to 25 in 10 seconds....that seems an eternity for a destroyer. Those things have MUCHO power to spare, unlike a freighter or other merchant.

This graph, created in 1929 as part of the Royal Navy's official war game rules, would suggest otherwise.

Wow!!! Learn something new every day. I wonder how this could be implemented into the sim. This would make game play quite a bit different.

Like I said, goblin editor + ship .sim file (unit ship controller) + reduced ship engine power + tons of testing = realistic ship performance...
Is that only me or I hear new mod is coming? :hmm2:
Ever tireleslly improving realism I see :)
I finally got my computer back to capable of playing games ... after a quite fatal crash :( Running Linux now .. and what do ya know, SH5 works with some minor adding to wine :)
Expect me to be around again :p

The newest version of my Generic Patcher (v1.0.165.0) contains a new patch for SHSim_act: RPM inertia that addresses this 'problem'. When that patch is enabled the unit's shafts/props will not be able to 'spin up' or 'spin down' at ridiculous speeds anymore. This also prevents them from accelerating/decelerating at unrealistic accelerations. You can tailor the patch to your liking also by clicking on the Notes= of the patch and following the directions. The default settings of the new patch cut the acceleration/deceleration of the warships down to 10% of what they were before, 5% for the merchants and subs, and airplanes stay at their stock value. It also has the option of whether the patch applies these settings to the AI units, player's unit, or both.

Can you show any reference that the "war games" were conducted by the RN, or that they were in any way "official"? I've had that chart for decades, and the more research I conduct the more suspect I find it. I'm fairly certain that it was created for a private game and I'm not sure exactly how they did their calculations, but I'm also reasonably certain that they didn't ride any ships with a stopwatch. If someone had done that the information would be available today, and it isn't.

HMS Leander was not a destroyer, and in fact there are only two Leanders that graph could possibly refer to, and I have to wonder which one they meant. The first was a 4300-ton screw-and-sail cruiser commissioned in 1885 and sold in 1920. With an indicated horsepower of 5500, the power/weight ratio was a paltry 1.27.
The next Leander was a light cruiser commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1931, two years after the date on that chart. If that's the Leander they meant then the line for that ship was purely speculative, which means that might also be true for the rest of the chart. That it was the ship they meant is highly unlikely, since that Leander wasn't even ordered until February 1930. With a full-load displacement of 9740 tons and pushing 72,000 horsepower she had a power/weight ratio of 7.39.
Ambuscade was indeed a destroyer, commissioned in 1927, and had a power/weight ratio of 22.4. Of course there are other factors involved, particularly propeller slippage at low speeds, but I highly doubt that Ambuscade and Leander (either one) had similar acceleration characteristics.
