I was going to list all the roles I've loved him in, but there are just too many. I was going to list just personal favorites but again there are too many. Only the ones I remember off the top of my head? The ones I've forgotten but was reminded of by somebody else's list? It just can't be done.
He was one of the all-time greats.

Thoroughly Bummed! Grew up on Maverick and saw every episode of the Rockford Files- Am watching the Great Escape as I post. The ladies love him in Victor/Victoria with Julie Andrews. My personal fav is Hour of the Gun where he's a darker Wyatt Earp. Even his beef commercials were good,. He received two purple Hearts for his service in the Korean war and had served in the Merchant Marine. Godspeed sir!:salute:

He was a good'un alright...
I think my mother had a secret crush on the guy. She never missed a movie or TV show that he starred in. She even gave my youngest brother the middle name Brett after Brett Maverick, though we could never get her to confess to it. She probably shoved Saint Peter out of the way to welcome him through the pearly gates.:haha:
RIP Jimmie boy. You had a good and full Hollywood life.

Sad news. Everyone my age grew up watching the Rockford files, including myself. I wasn't big a fan of detective or police genre, but I still enjoyed that one, and mainly because of Garner. The opening answering machine message bits and his amiable snark were iconic. RIP James Garner.
I really liked Rockford Files, too. Much better than the typical Hollywood stuff. Hour of the Gun was also very good.

RIP Jim
MeTV has a Sunday block of programming called "Catch Me If You Can"
Catch Me If You Can: This block, airing Sundays from 3:00 to 9:30 (or 10:00) p.m. Eastern, consists primarily of five detective series from the 1970s and 1980s: Remington Steele, The Streets of San Francisco, Cannon, The Rockford Files and Kojak, followed by a Columbo telefilm (as a result, on weeks when a Columbo film running 90 minutes is scheduled, the half-hour following the film is filled by an episode of M*A*S*H).
I think its channel 186 on cable

For me Support your Local Sheriff is the all time funny movie.
Loved everything he did. Rest in Peace Brett Maverick, my favorite western.
From everything I have ever heard of him he was a real class act and I know people who knew him well.

I guess on a forum like this we should give a mention of Up Periscope. James Garner and the Alan Hale Jr. "The Skipper" of Gilligan's Island fame.

One of the last true originals. They have been playing a quote from him on the local radio where he disclaims any desire to be the No. 1 or the "best" actor in Hollywood; he said he didn't want to be No. 1 because "them what would you have to shoot for?"; he said he'd rather be something like No. 9 or 10 because then you have a goal to work up to achieving. This, I believe was the source of his success and charm. He didn't want the accolades, he just wanted to do a good job and be treated fairly. He was in the class of actors like Robert Mitchum: what you saw is what you got. Garner was also one of the first actor to stand up against the studios and producers and demand an honest accounting and fair compensation on percentage of the profit deals. Studios and producers are infamous for their "creative' accounting methods intended to deny actors, writers, and other production persons full, fair participation in the success of a project. Garner filed lawsuits, an act tantamount to professional suicide, won the suits and still managed to remain a star commodity. This is a tribute to his ability to attract a large enough audience and fan base so as to make him immune to the threats of the studios and producers...
By a strange coincidence, last Saturday night, I was flipping around the channels on the TV and I came across an old black and white "Maverick" episode. The episode was unique in that it was a sly parody of another classic TV western, "Gunsmoke". The plot involved Maverick trying to find a hidden treasure in a town that had a marshal very intent on keeping out "undesirables" such as the gambler, Maverick. The marshal was a sendup of James Arness and his Matt Dillon character and there was a supporting cast gently mocking the other characters of Dodge City such as Doc, Miss Kitty, Chester, etc. The episode allowed Garner to display his talents both as a comedic and dramatic actor and it was a strange but enjoyable coincidence given that the news of his passing would come out the next day...
Let it also not be forgotten Garner was a veteran who received two Purple hearts and that he was a loving husband who married only once, in 1956, and remained married to his wife, now his widow, until his death. Fifty-eight years is more than a commitment, it is undying love. My sympathies to his wife and family and, to James Garner, thank you for giving the world so many fine performances and unique characters. Rest in peace, sir...

Like in Vienna's posting of James Garner's career I might add that James was married for 60 years, but the actress he did the Polaroid one step commercials with was thought to be his wife by the people that saw them due to their chemistry in the commercial.
also when he sued the Hollywood producers of Rockford Files for bad math on paying him ... James Garner won over $14 million dollars in the settlement
Feel like I knew him better than some of my own family members.
Who could ever forget the bar scene in Up Periscope when he was in the bar in Hawaii when they got the call to return to the boat. Alan Hale Jr was at the bar waiting for two Hawaiian cuties to return from the restroom.
Ohohiee and Maui Wowie :yeah:

That would be Mariette Hartley, whom I loved ever since her one episode of Star Trek. It became such a joke that her husband started wearing a T-shirt that said "I am not James Garner."

When I think of classy and cool, I think of James Garner.
Garner was also one hell of a driver; he often did his own stunt driving in films and TV roles. Professional stunt drivers who worked with him have said he could have easily become a pro stunt driver if he so wanted...

Unlike the other actors involved, Garner did his own driving in Grand Prix! It's obvious in a couple of scenes.
