In December of 1944, the Nazis launched a massive assault against Allied forces on the Western Front. Among the 89,000 US casualties was a solider who left his camera behind in the foxhole where he was taking refuge. Now, 70 years later, the camera — and the photos in it — have been recovered.http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--GjJsoB3D--/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/ntbjobobrdgnmaykibhp.png

There are others. How the film survived 70 years in the ground is beyond me...

Film survives a lot of time if the conditions are right. We have several examples during the last years of ancient plates and roll films being discovered and the negatives were still intact or recoverable.
Try that with a digital :O:!

I have an elderly customer that fought in the bulge. One interesting story he told me was when he got to go to town for supplies, he had his uniform cleaned...Said it was so much colder after that, that the ground in dirt for so long was a great insulator and waterproofer..
