Just a general poll of opinions. when we see most submarine discussions its all technical. how quiet, how fast, how deep, weapons. ect.

but here is a new idea I want to though out there. All technical matters aside, which submarine do you think is the most beautiful of all time, from the first to the most modern.

Ill throw mine out there. I think that the Russian Alfa, or the Akula are the nicest looking subs out there. that teardrop hull, the steamlined sail, and even the look of the hydrophone pod on the top of the rudder. It looks fast, and deadly.

but what do you think is the nicest?

Yeah, I have to agree on the Alfa and Akula, they are very nice looking boats.
The Typhoon and the Oscars have a beauty of their own, a sort of awe at the size of them.
The Astute is an interesting shape, especially around the bow and ventral area. :yep:

I was always fond of the type XXI. For a late war sub it was ahead of its time.

Looks like a dolphin almost. Sexy design, not the standard toilet paper tube design.

Sadly the Russian Navy is in a sad state, and think this article and its capibilities may be a bit of fluff journalism, considering the source.

But the pics kinda show the dolphin, dolphins rock.

Flipper, with missiles, and 3 times the speed.:D

Always liked the Narwhal Class V-boats...with the two big deck guns. :D

I'd have to say the Type II and VII look pretty nice...and the S Boats.

As far as modern subs go....ah...I like the 688 and the Akula. The Virginia class boats look pretty similar to the 688 imho.

^lol

Back on topic: Depends on the time ..

WW1: Several german boats, i like the petroleum variety .. also the pre-ww1 french Gymnote (1888, NOT the later one lol) gets my vote.

WW2: VIIB and IXB, but also the US sugarboats from S1 on - i always liked this small deck on a spindle hull

Cold war: Alfa. Maybe also the Sierrra ones. And the first US streamlined Albacore!

Now: Akula

Only design and form, of course .. :)

Loving all the variety here. And all good choices. I don't know, personal preference but the boxy square sails on the American subs just ruin it for me. Like someone put it there as an afterthought.

From ww2 I'd have to say the IX type u-boat, the rugged looking conning tower and the slight rake to the prow just looks nice. It's a classic look
