On the news today.
Remember my day to day description of the 10 day war that Slovenia fought for independence for the 20 anniversary ??
On the June 30th thread I mentioned a JLA (Yugoslav national army) terrorist was on a rampage trough Ljubljana that resulted in 2 people dead and 2 wounded.

Some archives were made non-confidential recently and a journalist discovered, that it was not a JLA operative (either a hardline sympathiser or on orders from Belgrade), but a TO soldier (Territorial defense, the Slovene army) gone mad. :o

So after 23 years we find out that one of ours went postal.

Since I already started, I'll just describe the events at that night.

It was the night 29th of June to 30th of June, 1991, right in the middle of the war. A high ranking assembly was in session at the parliament so the entire city was on high alert.

At 23:00 the TO soldier (identity still unknown, the official story said it was a JLA conscript from Kosovo that was captured few days earlier and later escaped, archives say that he wore TO insignia and left a TO occupied building) started from a Student home in the city center.

At 23:40 he tries to steal a vehicle from a resident but she drives away. He shoots at her but misses.

23:45 he stops another resident with a Zastava 101 and forces him to exit and after that commandeers the vehicle.

23:50 he comes to a truck barricade where he kills a policeman Stanislav Strasek and wounds 2 truck drivers that held the barricade.

He then drives towards north across Ljubljana. The forces on the ground hear the shots and respond.

24:00, the police intercepts him, forces him out of the car and after a brief firefight kills him.

It was decided that due to the war it was to be announced that it was a JLA terrorist.

All governments are guilty of not telling their people the real truth, no matter where you live.

No truer words ever been spoken.

No government is truly benevolent.

There is a quote I heard once, though I heard it attributed to Dick Cheney, I cannot picture him saying it publically.

"Never let a catastrophe go to waste" For example, using 9-11 to start a war in Iraq (Afghanistan, I get, but Iraq was so far in left field)

Take a bad event, then twist the narrative to suit your needs. Using bought media sources to spread propaganda.

A huge reason I am on an anti-media crusade, they are just as crooked as the politicians these days.

Further reading shows that there was an important vote in the parliament about the course of the war. The shots heard were a boost to PMs decision :)

And Svajncer (veteran, officer and war historian) said that they were ordered to fire a couple of rounds into the air behind the parliament to instill a sense of urgency in to the PMs.
