SH3Speech is an absolutely invaluable application for those wishing to give verbal orders in game. I have completed 35 patrols and it is currently Oct 1943 in my career. I have had no miss heard orders that have resulted in damage or the loss of the boat. I have accidentally and inexplicably launched decoys though. I recommend everyone should use it. Just search sh3speech on google and you will find it. I am really impressed with it and have been singing its praises for some time now. Ive also got it for SHIV. I wish it was available for the older subsims too. It is nothing new for some of you but I just felt I needed to say something positive about one of the many awesome mods available for this sim

I dunno. I doubt my German would be good enough.

Then you can give your commands in English. SH3Speech comes with a complete set of predefined verbal commands in both English and German. In fact, you can switch from one language to the other (crew is bilingual?) without changing anything.
"Dive the boat" "Jawohl, Herr Kaleun." "Kleinefahrt voraus" "Jawohl, Herr Kaleun." - No problem!
I have been using Sh3Speech (and SHSpeech for SH4) exclusively for the past two years. After training my Windows VR (took 15 minutes), I get zero misrecognitions (executes wrong command) and about 2% non-recognitions (doesn't execute anything). I have used a cheap $12 Radio Shack wired headset and a $100 Sony wireless headset with equally good results, although a $120 Logitech wireless had such poor voice input quality that it was useless.
SH3Speech is not a mod, but a free-standing program. It doesn't prevent the player from using keystrokes or mouse movements if he needs to. Voice command gives a sense of being in command of the boat that goes waaay beyond keyboard-and-mouse control. It's the difference between simulating a ship and simulating a water-borne single-seat fighter.
I think that for me, I would leave speech recognition off. I can get into this game pretty well on it's own, I need to leave something in place to remind me that its not real.
I like to play the "das boot" soundtrack while on patrol (the hunt), and the collection does include clips with dialog from the movie. Since I've seen the movie so many times, listening to the german does not present any problems.
Besides, my wife has to suffer me playing this next to her most of the time as it is, the least I can do is *talk* to her, instead of the game :03:

Been said before and it's still true: Don't knock it if you haven't tried it.

Yup.. what he's saying is true, if you have a wife/girlfriend in the house, that wants you to talk to her instead of a game.
He' not knocking it.. but it's 'impractical' to use in his case (that's if you still want a relationship :D), as it would be in mine too.
I'd love to shout orders at my virtual crew.. but then my family would first of all, get very annoyed, then would have me committed

Sure! Why not. SH3-Speech (or S3S) can be downloaded here:
Download #1 (http://home.comcast.net/~tomcattwo/SH3/SH3Speech_V101.exe)
Download #2 (https://www.mediafire.com/?67e2d7e2e87693o)
Download #3 (http://www.mediafire.com/download/67e2d7e2e87693o/S3S_SH3Speech_V101.exe)
LAST VERSION is from 2009
... and it has got a thread here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=795971&postcount=1
I downloaded it from sites, 1, 2, & 3 and I was unable to install.
My "anti-virus/malware" program busted it as a "Trojan.Downloader.CTeam" and wiped it from my computer when I attempted the install.

With all due respect, Vanjast, knocking it, without trying it, is exactly what UKönig , and you, are doing. “I don’t have any direct knowledge of how this works in practice, but I THINK I know how it works, and, IF it works like I THINK it does, then I THINK that would cause a problem, so I won’t even try it.”
I have been evangelizing for SHSpeech ever since I discovered it two years ago, because I believe that the use of voice command adds greatly to the enjoyment of the game. Whenever I post a strong recommendation, someone invariably responds that they would like to try it, but that their spouse/SO/roommate will object. It would be refreshing to see a posting that said: “I tried it, and others around me found it annoying, so I won’t use it.” Then I would know that some people’s fears were well-founded.
My house has a large common area where we spend most of our time when we are indoors and awake. I play SH3 and SH4 with voice command while my wife sits near-by watching TV, reading, or working on her hobbies. What she does doesn’t bother me, and what I do doesn’t bother her. Trust me, after 40 years of marriage, I would know soon enough!
“YMMV” I like to say. But, before you tell me what your mileage is, please go for a drive.

Ive had rows with with my fiance over this sim without shspeech installed. Our solution is to have it in the spare room and I limit the times I play on it. I agree partly with the points made but not totally. I use a turtle beach headset to limit any extra noises. It is easy to get sucked into this game and let yourself go a bit I must admit but a wise man can see this coming and puts an end to it. Its not as bad as World of Warcraft but its close.

I'm tempted to try it, but since I am constantly interrupted by kids and don't want to bother my wife I probably won't.
But I love the idea.
Many many years ago on one of my first PCs I was playing Microprose Flight games like F19 and F15 Strike Eagle. I had a very primitive voice recognition/hotkey program that I bought and it was FANTASTIC to be able to issue voice commands to open bomb bay doors, drop bombs, etc., without taking your hands off the flight controls. Remember the movie Foxfire anyone? :)
So I love the idea. I just don't want to annoy my wife with my video games any more than I already do. :)
I suppose I could play with headphones since my mike is part of the headphones...

No need to shout, sport!!
I think you're mixing up the family effects talking to a game has on diffferent families, than the application usefulness.
Nobody is denying it's capabilities and usefulness (I tried this years ago), but some families find it annoying to say the least. You're one of the lucky ones I guess.
BTW... I've also served a 'life sentence +'... and if you'd like to know, speech recognition works on pattern signatures, like passive (or active) sonar in today's subs - hence the prior training needed as everyone's speech signature varies. I was working with people at Uni when they were developing this... back in the 'dark ages'

I was just joking.
It might be worth it if I could just say "Come to heading 354" rather than having to screw around with that compass thing.

Sorry you mistook my emphasis for shouting. Next time, I'll underline.
And, no, I did not mix anything with anything else. I said, and reaffirm here, that, if a poster is going to criticize a mod (or whatever) as being unusable for him, he ought to at least base his criticism on experience, not on speculation about what might happen based on how he assumes the mod will impact his environment.
A case in point: "I'd love to shout orders at my virtual crew...." Speaking calmly and quietly works just as well with a virtual crew using voice command as it does with a real-life crew. Shouting and screaming may be fine if you are trying to emulate a certain movie, but I doubt it accurately reflects the professionalism of the Kriegsmarine. Or represents effective behavior for a commander. And it can saturate the voice input, leading to nonrecognition errors.
I was just joking.

(Sigh!) Because SH3Speech does not know your current heading, you can not say "Come to heading 354". The best you can do is say "Turn starboard 37 degrees." It would be nice if you could, but that is a limitation of SH3Speech. Only SH5, with an integrated voice command capability, lets you do that.
But heading commands are the only ones limited in this way. Depth, speed, and rudder are not. All "gauge-mousing" inputs are precise and reproducible. Gauges switch from one function (like rudder/heading) to the other automatically. And you never have to use a mouse or keyboard entry again.
