View Full Version : How does one make SH5 behave more like SH3?

Hello!
I have registered to ask this question. I played Silent Hunter III for many years since it came out. It is a good game. But lately I have changed my computer's Operating System from Windows XP to Windows 7 and and Silent Hunter III no longer functions. I therefore downloaded Silent Hunter V from Steam file distribution service and tried to play it.
But I have discovered that it is not the same as Silent Hunter III. What modifications are best to upgrade Silent Hunter V to Silent Hunter III?

Hiya,
And Welcome Aboard
With the steam version you're missing out on being able to fix a multitude of things (you can't patch steam .exe)
You can start by getting to grips with tdw's newui's, in there you have options for settings from advanced hud to sh3 style
There's a few other ui's that will maybe tickle your fancy regarding being more like sh3
Not being a steam user myself, no doubt a 'steamer' will be along to help you out
Have a scroll through the two main sh5 forum parts, you should see ideas from other steam users that have migrated from sh3
DBSM is here, so maybe read up on that
There's gotta be many things here that you should recognize, just browse and read i guess
Sorry i can't be much help

Firstly, welcome aboard.
Define "not functions".
And then:
WIN 7 (it works fine):

In relation to your second question, what do you need from SH 5 that simulates SH 3 behaviour? AI? Country Rosters?
Campaigns? Scenarios?
There are many many mods but check out this:

In particular posts no. 23 and 24.
Check the stickies here where you posted this.
Also check out the Silent Hunter 5 Mods section, the stickies and the super mod which seems to be what everyone is using at the moment:

SHIII crashes to desktop when I load it up. I set my screeen resolution to 1024x768 and it crashes to desktop after the movie sequence rather than before.
As for SHV shortcomings: Post mission all I can do is run around a submarine hangar. There is no option to advance or exit. Secondly there are no keyboard shortcuts to change from station to station mid mission. I have to run their physically. This may seem more "real" but it is a step back in terms of efficiency. Thirdly everyone is speaking English for some reason.
I want to quick-switch between crew stations and the post mission debrief. Running around like a ninny is stupid.

The hanger you have to click on one of the guys, or press esc key to exit etc
T'other one does ya eels/upgrades etc
Newui's has teleport, is that what you mean ? (think at least another ui has something same/similar)
On dvd install u can choose german, don't think so for steam (?) ut maybe look for 'german voices' think this is german speech mod
I came from sh3/sh4 last thing i wanted was a sh5 carbon copy of sh3, why not try to get sh5 as best as you can and forget trying to clone it (for want of better wording)

Hi The Best
You have come from something you understand to something that is alien to you.
The key mods now that are in the forefront of SH5 are Open Horizons II v2.5 and TDW NewUI 7-4-2 or 7-5-0 version 17.
As a steam user you will not have the benefit of TDW Generic File Patcher but you will be able to use TDW Options File Editor Viewer (Post #52)
As a SH5 beginner see my tutorial Post #45
You will find plenty of help here on the forum, so do not struggle just ask.
If you are able to get the dvd version it is money well spent.
As a steam user see my Post #111

I'm with the OP, graphics look great but I miss clicking on my compass for course changes and other quick things. I just tried to sink a freighter but the TDC never locked on to it, data never updated, torp missed by a mile from 300 meters. sh3 seemed like I could manage an attack with minimal screen changes. So far it seems the captain has to run all over the boat to get anything done. When is the intercom available.
is there a link to a tutorial on setting up your first attack? I must be missing some basic stuff.

I have grown to hate the Ubiplay software - I might seek out a torrented version. They already have my money, right? That should help with acquisition of German speaking language voice files.
Reading of other threads suggests that modification installation sequence is of importance. I have read about the open horizons mod, and I like the look of it, but the forums indicate it should be installed last.
Is there a modpack for people who prefer the feel of SH3? I like SH5s improved graphics, but that is all. I dearly miss being able to quickly switch between stations, and especially not having access to the torpedo computer or the ID books. It makes torpedoes difficult to use.
Finally is there a mod to reduce the mouse lag? I have a modern computer and newer games such as Far Cry 3 and War Thunder run fine just fine on Maximum settings. But this game seems slow to respond to where I place the mouse. Especially annoying since all the keyboard shortcuts are gone.

Hi The Best
Check out my Post #112 for antilag

You can create keyboard shortcuts by using TDW's Options File Editor Viewer

Hi acetoolguy
If you are using this UI then you can either press the ‘C Key or click on the ‘Heading Bar’ to bring up the Compass’ as explained underlined below.
SH5 Enhanced UI consists of:
TDC. Each scope's TDC mode can be set to: no TDC, minimal dials, all dials
Heading bar integrated into the speed bar.
Clicking the heading bar readout will reveal a heading/rudder dial.
The dial is switchable from heading mode to rudder mode by clicking on the button under the dial.
Clicking on the heading bar readout again will hide the dial (it retains the mode it was in when revealed again).
Mousing into the heading bar readout and pressing the appropriate keys will set the ordered heading.
You can press and hold the appropriate keys to keep changing the ordered heading.
The appropriate keys (and all options) can be changed by editing \MODS\NewUIs_TDC_7_4_2_TheDarkWraith\data\Scripts\ Menu\TheDarkWraithUserOptions.py).
This is done through TDW's Options File Editor Viewer.
See my Tutorial Post #6
Mousing out of the heading bar readout with a new ordered heading will cause this ordered heading to take effect.
The dial can also be used to set the ordered heading / rudder angle.
A tooltip has been integrated to be shown when you mouse into the heading bar readout.
It will either display the current heading or if you have requested a new ordered heading the current ordered heading.
Once within 5 degrees of the ordered heading the tooltip will start to display the current heading.
The heading/rudder dial can also be cycled on/off using a hotkey.
The state of the dial (rudder or heading) can be switched via hotkey also.
Officer shortcut bar with commands for officers.
Optional integrated levels that gives the user Fuel, CO2, O2, and battery levels bargraph.
Used to monitor levels of each.
Current level displayed on bar graph.
This Ui is highly recommended Peter
