I want to fire this game up again so dl'd my steam version. When I try an install GW it says I need a clean install, no other mods. This is right off steam though, nothing else. Is there something in Steam that GW thinks is a mod?
Thanks for any thoughts.....
Tried to play vanilla but get a stopped working message, might be time to give 5 a try.

You can install GWX to a fresh clean installation of SH3 whether it be from Steam or a game disc.

got past the 3d engine issue but I get a 'not responding' error during the mission load. Any ideas how to get past it?
Got it to play one time, did a quick patrol, now back to not responding....sigh..

Before you installed did you ensure all remnants of previous SH3 installs had been purged from the registry?
If I recall, what I did was DL from steam. Booted it up (not sure it this is necessary). Closed out of it. Ran the GWX3 install and then installed the SH3 Commander mod. After that I installed the GWX3 compatibility patch for Sh3 Commander.
SH3 Commander is not necessary, that was just the sequence I did my initial install.
I also run as administrator if that matters.

Thanks for the answers. As for GW, much as in life, the path you choose matters. I had not caught the default is Ubi soft, not steam.
After I installed GW I had to reset the resolution again because I got the 3D engine error message. I went and made those changes and tried to run the game but got the not responding after picking a mission. What I did the first time, but not the second, was to run the tutorial as a refresher. When I went back the 2nd time, I loaded the tutorial for a moment, got out and then was able to load the patrol mission. I have no idea of why loading the tutorial allowed the game to work after, but I'm playing again.
