Ok two questions really. One is has anyone ever made a Type XXI mod where a deck gun is added to it? The other is if a deck gun being added to it messes with the subs stealth capability?

Out of curiosity since I haven't yet taken a career that late yet. By the time the XXI is available is there any significant amount of merchant traffic that is not armed?

No clue since i've never survived beyond May of 43. This is more a question of curiosity then anything else.

In RL, the XXI had no deck gun as it affected the streamlined capabilities of it underwater, and ( tying into Infernat's question) the deck cannon was useless against the merchants' firepower. If one looks at Victory and Liberty ships, they are usually heavier armed than Q-ships and early war destroyers. Ive only been to mid-44, so it may not be a concrete fact.

As for a mod, not sure about it. It might be under the SH3 mods forum.

Of some interest; I did not know that President Truman went on a ride and submerged in Erich Topp's XXI U-2351 to a depth of 450 feet! http://www.advanceddivermagazine.com/articles/u2513/u2513.html (http://www.advanceddivermagazine.com/articles/u2513/u2513.html)

Some of the small coastal type vessels but the larger tonnage are usually armed with at least one four inch weapon.

One of the big design innovations/improvements of the Type XXI was the streamlined hull. This enabled it to go faster underwater than on the surface.

Adding a gun would be counter to that.

But, as was noted, by that late in the war, even the allied rowboats are toting guns.

In 1942 or so I sometimes encounter lone armed merchants at night, and I'll engage them from 7000meters or so. Usually I can gun them down before they can hit me. Usually.

After 1942, good luck with any surface attack. I usually retire my qualified deck gunners at that point and take on new petty officers and train them for AAA.

I believe someone has modded the aa guns to be deck guns.

I dont think the issue of stealth is modelled in, but perhaps speed and dive times.

Not 100% sure though.
