I must play some more of it, it looks good but rather complex in places.

Arclight
05-29-14, 08:29 PM
Right, so dedicated servers happened and it seems to work well enough. I'll keep it running for the time being, though the question is if we want to stick to what we have currently or start over?

Oberon
05-30-14, 06:13 AM
I'm happy with what we have, we seem to have a couple of dedicated miner craft, what we need now really is a station to store our resources and act as a build platform. :yep:

EDIT: It's fallen over btw.

Arclight
05-30-14, 09:14 AM
Huh, that's novel. My router decided to flat out forget about the port assignments for it.

Speaking of falling over, this thing is still being wonky. If it rolls over altogether I may have to temporarily raid the server for parts or just put that back in to main service. Not really sure what's going on yet.

Arclight
05-30-14, 04:49 PM
Right then, it's running from a custom start now. The first attempt turned a little... Not quite apocalyptic, but getting there. Small station with some necessities and supplies to start with. People should spawn at a medical bay, provided I didn't botch the edit. Otherwise you should spawn in a small pod, so no biggie anyway.

In terms of rules, just steer clear of what could be considered griefing. We can have some days where anything goes, so you can go around and blow the [redacted] out of everything, but I'd rather not make that the norm; make backup, wage war, continue from a save afterwards like none of it ever happened. Currently AI ships are off to see how everything holds up, but we could turn those on if targets are in high demand.

Name of the thing is Aero-Arc Space Engineering. Seems to only pop up in the Steam server browser, not in-game, don't ask me why. Uses a whitelist, so contact me for joining. Gives me a chance to make an edit and assign a med bay as well.

* try to remember to store inventory before logging off. Pretty sure it doesn't store character data yet.

Just a hint for peeps, best thing is not to actually try to land on anything, stop at least forty meters before anything that you don't want to crash into.
Then we can avoid unfortunate incidents that result in peoples ships being rammed into deep space... :hmmm:

Arclight

1. Never fly directly at something.

2. The dampening can fire thrusters at 150%. Something I tend to do is disable them, get going at something like 20m/s and just coast. Then when you arrive, toggle the dampeners on again to come to a stop.

Dampening only happens if you don't give input though. Takes a little getting used to, but it can bring you to a stop much faster than you can manually.

Oberon
05-31-14, 01:43 PM
Indeed, it costs a lot less energy if you turn the dampeners off when throttling up and then turn them back on just before your destination. :yep:

I'd say that is a fair comparison. You mine stuff, then you build stuff. It is in early stages of having automation in it via conveyer tubes, which can be used to move stuff between machines and so on. It's in alpha atm, but showing great promise, on top of the stuff they are officially going to implement, the modding of the game seems to be easy, so content shouldn't run out.

Oberon
06-01-14, 03:18 PM
I think we might need to put MP on pause for a few patches, until it's a bit more stable. It's an Alpha so can't complain, but it is rather frustrating to get all the components together for something and then time out of the server and lose them all. Not to mention the problem of timing out whilst travelling in a ship, thus risking losing it into the void.

Arclight
06-01-14, 07:20 PM
Seems better now. Did a clean-up of the save and lowered the limit on floating objects. Raptor had been having a hard time but no complaints after that.

Not sure what the deal is here. Game is fine for Lion and Task, doesn't cooperate at all for others. CPU use peaks at some 5% and network peaks at about half available bandwith. At a guess it's down to connection stability, with the game having no tolerance at all for fluctuations.

Can do, but I need a Steam ID (http://steamidconverter.com/). Stick your profile URL in there and then get me the SteamID64. Tried going through my friends list and the SubSim Steam group but I can't seem to find it.

Med bays are filled already... Should prolly ask anyone that spawns in a ship to just grab what they need to build their own med bay.

My current theory is to due with internet peak usage, at a guess I'd say that Space Engineers is not particularly fond of lag spikes and latency issues, so if you hit one you're out the door. Given that the most successful times for me to connect seem to be either late at night or earlier in the day I'd wager that it's to do with the traffic on the internet.

Why this should be the case is absolutely beyond me, it's not as if we've never hosted stuff on your server before and it's nearly always run fine.
But then again...

Reminds me of the trouble we had with Civ5 for example. Fine one night, unstable another. Maybe more to do with the Steam network.

Anyway, that mining support platform is finally, miraculously, complete. As with everything, feel free to put it to good use.

The refineries have been bumped to 3x speed. Waiting several days to get the resources for a few large ship thrusters together... Bit ridiculous.

Yeah, this is confusing me a great deal.

So I decided to run some tests, I picked a couple of random servers with differing pings and logged on to them. All of them started with you in your little yellow ship, and in all of them the ship was perfectly controllable.
In the 21 ping server it was all nice and smooth, even when I smashed into a rock, in the 100+ ping server it was choppy but still controllable and in the 60 ping server it was also controllable, and there were a few other ships around.

So, what confuses me is this.

Why when I log into Arcs server (which has a ping of about 60 according to the Steam server browser) can I not control any ships. Literally the ship will spin around without any input and be like a bucking bronco in space. Completely uncontrollable.

Very frustrating... :hmmm:

EDIT: I should note that I connected to these servers through the in-game browser...I'm going to run another test in a minute and connect to a couple through the Steam browser, see if that makes a difference.

No, no difference made. Connected to a 15, 60 and 100 ping server, all ships fully controllable.

Are you guys aware of the landing pad bug? If anyone other than the host locks it, it causes server desync.

Arclight
06-09-14, 12:21 PM
That's a new one. So basically, no one should mag-lock the landing gears? :06:

Flamebatter90
06-09-14, 12:37 PM
Yes, if the bug is still there.

Found this thread discussing it: http://forums.keenswh.com/post/multiplayer-desync-with-landing-gears-6829138

It is possible that the bug has been fixed with the latest patch.

Oberon
06-09-14, 02:28 PM
Hmmm, I must admit that I've been unlocking the ship from the pad before lifting off which means that it could be that causing the problems.

Only one way to find out!

We have reverted the multiplayer code to the previous version and more improvements will come in the upcoming weeks.

Oberon
06-13-14, 02:08 PM
Well, there's good and bad news. I managed to (slowly) connect and stay on for a while, an hour or two at least, enough time to do some mining. The obscene control spasms also appear to have gone.
The down side is that as time went on I got more and more input lag, which is to say that I would press T to enter the cockpit of Dave 2 and nothing would happen for ten to twenty seconds. Nothing too major but in the end it got to the point where I was waiting for over five minutes to get into the cockpit and nothing was happening, so I left, and reconnecting has proven, challenging, as in it's taking over fifteen minutes to download a 3mb file.

Still, it's a step in the right direction. Unfortunately I was unable to turn the space station off before I left, so someone might want to just do that in passing, although I think there's plenty of fuel in there to keep it going for a while. :yep:

I am quite far behind with anime I don't watch it much at all these days.

I just thought the girls with the sub in the BG would give a kreigsmarine look.

Oberon
08-13-14, 03:18 PM
It's a good series, all things considered, I think a lot of people expected it to be like Strike Witches and include a few million panty shots, but it really doesn't and focuses a lot on the statistics of the tanks and is in general quite realistic, if you overlook the use of girls in tanks as a national sport and the humongous aircraft carriers that they live on. :03:

Arclight
10-21-14, 05:19 AM
Righto, so we've got a server running again, seemingly (thankfully) with less issues as previously.

It's an open (50km) map, with asteroids spread far apart. A number have been discovered and there's a large central one we're currently parked at. Operations are based off of a large ship with some basic facilities. Preference went to that over a station on account of the large distances; made sense to have a mobile home plate to start on.

Asteroids are marked by small satellites with a 5km broadcast range. Once you come within antenna range you should see a marker pop up, with the accompanying asteroid not far away from it.

Seems like a good idea to add a small beacon to these satellites once discovered: they have much larger range, allowing you to keep track of them all over the map. The solar panels can easily power a beacon.

Find an asteroid and it's yours to name, so if you like exploring, go for it.

There's a small remote control, battery powered miner and a more conventional small explorer ship. The base ship, these 2 small craft and resources stored on the base ship are considered for common use. I would ask that you help keep stocks up if possible, don't just grab and run.

No one is forced to stick around; feel free to venture out on your own if there's a personal project you want to work on.

Oberon
10-21-14, 03:16 PM
I left the Explorer at the central beacon because it wouldn't stay attached to the main ship, the remote miner self detonated a couple of times but I seem to have fixed it. Currently sitting at 'The Foot' ready for mining.

Aaaand the miner won't connect to the connector (is it because it says it's owned by Arclight?) so I've stuck it in the hanger and turned the battery off to save charge.

Raptor1
10-21-14, 05:21 PM
I couldn't get the Explorer to park either. Not sure why it's doing that, maybe its parking brakes need rebuilding. I left it at The Foot for now.

Arclight
10-22-14, 01:05 AM
Gears seem to be wonky, small ones just get destroyed anyway. Actually removed them from the explorer and tried the big pad on the side of the base ship, but that just refuses to lock. It's an improvement over something self-destructing when docked, but the moving together is still a bit wonky. It's tricky in singleplayer, almost impossible with the bit of extra lag in multiplayer.

We've got a bit of a stockpile, right? Prolly an idea to build our own miners and scrap the drone.

I am late to the party, I just stumbled over Space Engineers in recent Steam sale. I am a bit clueless and confused since I am at the very beginning of and feel a bit disoriented, but I seem to increasingly like the game for the very concept of it. Just posting this bump-up of the thread to let you know the game finally, since half a year already, has left Early Access, and currently can be had cheap in a sale. An economy update was just released. The workshop and modding activity looks tremendously vivid and alive.

I like sandbox open world games with base construction and all that. I hope that my impression of that this game is worth to be played in SP and not just MP, is not misled.

Skybird, what are you clueless about with this game?

I won't say I'm an expert. But I played this game a bit before planets became a thing, and since. It started as a SP game and it is still very appropriate to play it as such. You don't need to play MP. I don't. MP does tend to sacrifice more grids to the lord Clang though. But it does add that little extra unpredictable and creative element to gameplay. I haven't played much with the Economy content yet myself. I still have a world which started with the old planetary lander and just updated and enabled the new economy settings. I did not get a tablet with coordinates of a station but found an NPC station by scanning grids with the admin tools. And I have yet to find it in person 'on foot'. It's mostly an NPC element you can play with or against I gather from the videos around on youtube.

Skybird
10-28-19, 03:07 AM
Sorry Pisces, I did not notice your reply earlier, since I visit this subforum just randomly.

I have practically abandoned the game, since it is very buggy and leaves the running session with keyboard commands turnign dysfunctional very often.

I also struggled with the design of the interface, i do nt like it and do not get along with it that good. In general hte game makes it quite an unwlecoming, discourgaing exprience to get into it. The needed info and invitations may be scattered around forums and web and youtube, that may be. But that is not like it should be done, imo.

I feel about this game that a lot was lost by not adding just a bit more. And by not caring for better technical reliability.
