Wow! That's over half of the net cost of the film, estimated to be $160 million dollars, in one day.

I bet it's due to all of the bad weather and people wanting to get out of the house for a change.

I will have to elbow my way in to see this one: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/05/18/a-big-godzilla-has-a-big-weekend/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0

Saw it Friday night ,all I can say is "Wow"
I wont spoil it BUT it's more a Toho Godzilla movie than a hollywood one - if you enjoy the Toho one's then you should like this one,(Directors Gareth Edwards who did "Monsters" and you can see some of that in it as well)

I remember watching the different movies as a kid in the 60's. They played them in the small downtown theatre. My son saw the recent one...twice. He said it was good, but he's always been into Godzilla.

Perhaps the next King Kong will be behind him in the queue.

He'll have to get in line behind the pending remakes of Jaws, Poltergeist, The Twilight Zone, Ben-Hur, The Crow, Wargames, Commando, and The Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Life as film historian is going to be seriously confusing in the next few decades. :shifty: Are you discussing the remake...or the remake of the remake of the remake?

Hollywood be circling the drain. There are millions of books out there that haven't been adapted for the silver screen yet. So why do they keep rehashing previous titles ad nauseum?
Ars Gratia Artis perhaps?:hmmm:

So far, one of my friends made the best commentary on this movie imo...

Ever watch a movie, and it's clear an actor in it wants to be in a better movie? In Godzilla, it's clear Godzilla wants to be in a better movie.

At the end of the first 'newish' Godzilla version we left our seats with the words "Godzilla legt noch rasch ein Ei, und dann kommt der Tod herbei".

Coulda went without the love story, took time away from the destruction.
It was about 10 minutes away from a rom com.

3-5 stars. Just cuz Godzilla is always awesome.

5 of 5 stars, the movie is quite good and Godzilla is still a heart-breaker for the age!

Some of my co-workers saw it. From what they told me, it sounds like something to rent/stream. Personally, from what I have heard about it, it is not enough to entice me to go to a theater.

It matches the trend of any modern remake anymore.

I think alot of it comes into peoples expectations based on the fond memories the original invoked.

Godzilla was a staple of my childhood, and while the CGI was awesome, destruction was adequate, they threw too much (human) character development and borderline rom com stuff into it, and didn't make it about the monster.

Remakes stink, just look at how they wrecked the Posiedon Adventure.

It did not outright stink, but the smell of remake was in there, and nearly an hour to get to Godzilla. Sheesh.

My co-workers used the word "plodding" and "ponderous" to describe the action. :hmmm:

I saw it in a 3d theatre, so a rent/stream may not work so well. (freaking epic!)

I may sound like I am bashing the movie, I am not, just giving an honest critique. I enjoyed it, and not a waste of my money at all.

I am the same guy who liked Taken 2, then called on it and beaten up for it, here in this very forum (after a rewatch, rightfully so:o), so take my words with a grain of salt.:D
