Ahoy kaleuns,
I have a bit of a tale for you tonight. A catastrophe resulting from my noobness and greed that ended up sending my whole crew to Davy Jones locker.
I had left Wilhelmshaven to patrol AL38. All went well up until that point and a bit after. Sank a few tramp steamers and even a motor boat at one point.
One my way back to search the waters north of Ireland I get a report of a convoy headed for the Irish Sea, but still in deep waters. I set course and was in good spirits. The sea was relatively calm and it was just mid night when the convoy came into view.
As I was scanning for targets, lo and behold I spot my very first battleship target ever! Smack in the middle column of the convoy! I am exhilarated and immediately start setting up a firing solution. I am well out of ear shot of the escorts and begin motoring ahead of the convey. At the same time I use the 3:15 rule to gauge the speed to be about 6-7 knots.
Once I had a good lead I turned 90 degrees to the convoys path and get 800 meters from where the battleships column will pass. I also took note that another column will be passing dangerously close behind me.
I am eager for a battleship kill though so I wait patiently and in silence as the escorts pass and then the other merchants that make up the convoy. Finally the battleship is lined up and I fire. Somehow the torpedo tubes weren't previously opened (I swear this is a bug :hmmm: cause I previously heard the sound when I THOUGHT I had opened them the first time) but the shot was so close it didn't matter. I hear the three reports and I dive to 120 meters and slip away under the convoy. Only the rear escort bumbles around for a bit trying to find me, but I never even hear a ping.
I motor out 5 km and surface and take stock. After 30 min to an hour the battleship is beginning to list and its bow is starting to sink but it is keeping pace with the convoy. I am greedy and want to see it sink already. I figure I can reposition for a similar shot except on the opposite side. If by the time I have that shot lined up the battleship has not sunk I'll torpedo it again. If it has I'll take out the ore carrier that is in the front of the line.
As before I reposition and am waiting. However, as I time compressed up to my final spot and go back to regular time I hear a very LOUD prop sound. I am alarmed and realize quickly it must be the lead escort and I have somehow found myself in its path. Also note that I was at periscope depth at this time.
The sub suddenly rocks back and forth violently and I get a report the conning tower is destroyed :/\\!! This is soon followed by pings and depth charges. The destroyer seems to have rammed me then, in a short enough amount of time, realized what it had rammed and PROMPTLY depth charged me before it had completely passed over me. This brits don't mess around.
Either way, the depth charges do their damage. I am taking water on quickly in all compartments and the sub is sinking quick. I blow ballasts multiple times but to no avail. Two minutes later my crew are all dead. :dead:
Mistakes? Probably can be chalked up to greed and over zealous use of TC
Absolutely fun though :D
