View Full Version : Problem with manual aiming.
Hi everyone :) I created account on this forum because of my little problem with SH4.
For a long time i wanted to try myself in subsim. And I finally got myself steam version of SH IV. I didn't want to play like a land landman and started to learn how to use manual aiming. But then i noticed one peculiar thing. After all identification, speed measures are done my crew seems to aim at the CURRENT position of the target istead of aiming before him. Is it some kind of bug or maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Welcome aboard Ofacet, subsim is the No1 site to get an anwser on all your question :D
nothing more i can say tho, i'm not an expert (boldy said i'm a fat newb), but there should be posts arround wich explain into detail about manual aiming.
(i'm still using auto aim, mastering maneuvering controls first)
It's pleasure to be aboard ;)
Awmaygawd I already know what i was doing wrong.
Nevermind, this topic is closed now. It took me two days to figure out i didnt press red button after estimating the speed of enemy vessel. :(

If you turn on the position keeper button after getting all your calculations, it should aim before your target.
By position keeper I meant this button:

one very simple mistake people make is they do everything right but forget to open the torpedo doors, so when you fire it delays to open the doors and by the time it actually does fire you miss your target completely or barely hit the rudder doing minimal damage.

Ofacet, welcome aboard. Looks like you've got this problem figured out. I know I've had times that I've forgotten to turn on the Position Keeper. It might help to get in the habit of checking the PK on the attack map right before firing to see if it's where you think it should be.

I have to ask: why post a link to SH5 questions for a user that asked about SH4 in the SH4 section of the forum?

Aim the torpedoes manually. Even with auto-TDC. Watch the angle on the TDC, if it's too much left or right, adjust it accordingly. Turn it off if it's zipping all over. I can kill a dd zig-zagging by aiming it without the computer. I prefer a 0 degree angle. But if it is a sharp angle, compensate. Like if your target is 30 degrees to port, fire a spread at least 30 degrees to port.
Keep in mind that the torpedoes need at least 300 yards to arm. Anything inside that range, it's better to crash-dive, or at least evade.

Also Ofacet, aim the torpedoes a bit ahead of a merchie. Unless you think they may slow down or turn, that is the best way to kill'em. Usually they speed up if they see a torpedo wake. (Mk 10 and 14)

I switched to manual aiming after confusing results with the auto function.

This has helped me a lot already, i always aim on sight and that works for me for now.

Welcome to SubSim :sunny:
Ofacet, you didn't tell us what the solution was. It might help others with the same problem.
The crew (or TDC) does calculate the speed and course once you have taken a range reading twice with some time inbetween, and sent it to the TDC with that special button. After this calculation the target speed dial is set to the nearest value, but isn't sent to the TDC yet to take it into account. This button must be pressed again to make it stick in the TDC.
