I am smilingmonkey, or SM if you prefer. I have signed up just this evening to be a part of this lovely community that I have lurked in for a few days.

I am very new to the world of subsimming, so be aware I may ask some foolish questions in an unabashed fashion, without asking, we never learn I am told.

I have been bitten by the bug to attempt a naval sim, and subs seemed like the place to go. I am generally sneaky and patient by nature. A natural ambusher if I am honest, so I am hoping that will be of advantage.

Initially I was going to purchase SH5, but after reading so many negative responses to it, I have decided to have a look at SH4 and it's addon. I will be looking over the mods selection as soon as I am comfortable with the process here. I am hoping that there is something that will appeal to my mindset. I have some experience modding other games, such as the Total War series from Empire to Rome 2, so I have an idea of what to expect.

I look forward to communicating with those among you who feel like it, from the things I have read, I see that this is a pretty nice place.

Good hunting.
SM

Welcome to SUBSIM smilingmonkey :yep::up:

SH4 has many great mods, you'll enjoy it. As does SH3 :yep:

As far as SH5, it has come a long way since being released. With a bit of patience setting it up, you will find it very playable now. And it
continues to be improved.

Thank you for the welcome mates.

I have been reading through the process for getting SH5 to run as people would want it to, and it seems fairly complicated, but not impossible. I will look into it in the future. I do want to get the DVD version though, it seems there are some bug fixes that won't work on the steam version, unless I have misread some things.

Right now though, I am going to fire up SH4 for the first time and take a little tour around the options and UI, just to see what I am up against.

There are some great tutorials to help you with the above as well. Including this one: Here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211804)

Well, this is a fine thing.

I feel very welcome I must say.

I took my little sub out for my maiden voyage last night and ran through my paces. It was very smooth and not as daunting as I believed it would be. I put myself through many drills to see what the timing of events etc is like, and failed a couple of times to capitalise on distant contacts, not one shot was fired in anger, though a few HE shells did possibly frighten some of the local wildlife.

I have learned that pressing 'q' will open my tube doors, so that is something to remember, and the various 'f' keys instantly take me to different stations around the sub.

Now I will start hunting.

The cinema of this sim, even vanilla, is something quite lovely, the night sky and the sunsets as you steam along, watching the dawn over a calm sea, beautiful. I was not really expecting that.

So, I will start again now, with this 'training' having been done.
