So... Here I was just off Shikoku, having delivered an OSS agent to the coast, when, in absolutely abysmal weather... At night, and creeping along the coast and raiding small ports.... (1st raid bagged me a docked destroyer, despite having run myself aground..... >.>) I wander into my second harbor in pursuit of a merchant ship. I go to GQ, my deck gun fires one(1) round.... and Poof! The merchant ship disappears. It didn't sink, but literally did a Philadelphia Experiment disappearing act into thin air (as opposed to fat air=P)

It kinda left me with a "Now where'd the heck did that thing go? lol

(Running 1.4 I believe... And will have to update to 1.5 at some point....)

I haven't had that happen. Maybe the game decided the ship had set sail and removed it from port?

One time I snuck into a harbor, I ended up with quite a scare. I sank one maru at the dock, and my sound station lit up. Many ships reported, heading right for my position. (A little peak with the external camera showed a task force full of cruisers, heavy and light, with a ton of escorts.) Trapped in shallow water, and the only way out was past a massive task force. I had pretty much written off that campaign and was considering what my next one would be, when it got quiet. The entire task force had despawned almost on top of me. I tend to avoid harbors now.

That's probably what it was. The ship probably despawned. It's really frustrating when you're tracking a convoy, get in firing position, then poof, it despawns. :/\\!!

The game has ships/convoys despawn when they reach the end of their travel; they had no way to make them enter port and dock.

On the opposite side, ships spawn at the beginning of their journeys, but will not, if we are too close. These are just limitations in the game.

So there isn't much reason to hang around close to enemy ports. :)

Well shoot.... I would love to run a U-47-Scapa-Flow Raid into Hirashojima... and sink some warships..... *Sigh*

Why not? It's done all the time. Convoys may spawn and de-spawn, but there are always sitting duck vessels at anchor or docked in port. It should be a much more hazardous task as it was in the real event, but in the game harbor-raiding is relatively safe and easy.

Strangely enough, U-47's raid into Scapa Flow turned out to be a bit of an anti-climax. The U-Boat's first spread of torpedoes missed their intended target, and succeeded in only severing an anchor chain, which, surprisingly enough, did not alert the RN to U-47's presence. Instead, the U-Boat motored around Scapa Flow for 20 minutes on the surface in which the RN did nothing, reloaded its torpedoes, and then succeeded in sinking the Royal Oak on the second try. U-47 then escaped without problems before the Royal Navy did anything further.

Frankly, I'd expect the game to be more difficult than that....

It's a bit easier then that sadly. I make a habit of NEVER going into ports due to how easy it is.

Same here. It's just a boring turkey shoot. Sneak in; ambush the lone destroyer, if any; calmly sink all ships; sail away with impunity. Almost cheating.

I do sometimes (rarely) make exceptions if it seems "realistic" based on my patrol orders, or if I'm passing a harbor en route to port with a bunch of unused torpedoes after ah successful patrol. Gotta keep the brass happy.

Apparently Traveller's Mod has beefed up harbor security, though, so I might have another look. Obviously harbors are good places to find ships - attacking harbors SHOULD be good game content.
