View Full Version : SH3 Commander - Change Commander's name?

Hello Gentlemen,

SH3 Commander is such a great tool and enables you to do many things but so far I haven’t come across anything related to changing the Kaptain’s name. I was just wondering if there was a way to do that?

I put my full real name when I started my campaign… which does not exactly sound German. I heard I could also change something in the personal files but I am not sure.

A second question: What are the best available resources out there to learn to play 100% on SH3 + GWX? So far I haven’t enabled manual targeting and the torpedo officer is doing all the computations for me. I know there are many manuals and tutorials of all sorts out there, just wondering which ones you’d prefer.

Thank you! :Kaleun_Salute:

I heard I could also change something in the personal files but I am not sure. It's been a while since I did this myself, so details may have lost in this grey matter. But it should be as easy as changing the folder name (of your commander) in the Documents\SH3\data\cfg\Careers folder.

Thank you! :Kaleun_Salute:I proudly exclaim: "This Forum!!!"

But that is too easy. No, really, just ask what you do not understand. What are your weak points?

Before you start with manual targeting I think it is best to get a good grasp on situational awareness. Where is the target, or convoy? What is it's speed? Where is it going? What is it's size and compositions. Where are those nasty destroyers camping out? Build a picture of the situation in your head. And on the map! Plotting positions helps with that. You'll get to know where the target is in the future, and see when he's doing something that deviates from his normally ignorant state. It's especially important when you want to turn off the map contact updates. This makes all the target icons go away. The sacred interval for plotting in metric units is to do it every 3 minutes and 15 seconds. During that time your movement, or that of the target, is the knots value times hundred meters. It's just a matter reading the digits on the map. Crude, but effective.

A good starter thread, but there are also some videos on youtube of this is Dantenoc's: The Hunt.

Another popular tutorial is of Paul Wassermann:

http://www.paulwasserman.net/

For manual targeting the mods based on OLC's GUI mod are popular. (Magui , ACM Reloaded and some others that I cannot remember now) These do the measurement of range and AOB and speed in an entirely different way as the vanilla Notepad method. The OLC Gui based mods adds special rings to the attack periscope that works like a circular sliderule. Not only can you measure range from the mastheight like the vanila stadimeter, but you can also use this to measure the angle on the bow based on how wide it looks. And it doesn't take very long. (once you get the hang of it)

Example: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1139690&postcount=191

And with a special scratch mark on it you can abuse the same device to measure speed using the 'fixed wire' method. This last one can also be done in vanilla SH3, but the division of length by speed and conversion needs to be done with a calculator by hand. It's just easier. The idea is to time the passage of a ship through an imaginary wall, made by your periscope line (pointing to the bow).

For the vanilla notepad there is an excellent tutorial in the back of the GWX 3 manual. And of course plenty tutorials on youtube. But I don't have a link ready. I find this a rather unreliable method anyway. It's too dependent on range, which actually matter the least in aiming the torpedo. It's better to plot, measure speed from that, and enter the values directly into the TDC page ( F6).

Thank you very much Pisces for your answer.

For question 1: Yes indeed, it was a matter of changing the file's name SH3/data/cfg/Careers/"Commander's name". I rollbacked SH3 commander before doing so just to make sure.

Then, after having changed the file's name, I started SH3 Commander and the name on the front page was still the old one. I had to download SH3 with SH3 commander so that the change would be taken into account. Thank you :yeah:

And thanks for the links you gave me for question 2. They are very helpful. Actually, I know the forum is a great place to ask but I don't really have any known weak point at this stage... simply because I never tried to play at 100% :D for all the time I have been using SH3. I figured now that I role-play for the Donitz Flotilla I should push things to the next stage, so I needed to know if there were any widely used tutorials out there :know:. For now it will do just great. Thanks again and I will make sure to post if I have more questions.
