Captains log. S-32

First evening after sailing. Orders had us leave upon 10 December, but crew and myself eager to engage the enemy. It is in keeping with the Japs that they conducted a sneak attack upon us and we are more than eager to seek revenge upon them for Pearl Harbor. If luck favors us, we will find rich pickings in the straits of Luzon, where our orders place us. The crew knows that the Japs must invade Luzon in order to secure oil shipments from the south. Sunset is cloudless and bright. I figure we will continue on the surface until mid-day of the 10th before assuming submerged steaming during the day and surfaced at night. Admiral Hart has issued orders to commence unrestricted submarine warfare. Crew pleased.

(I should say that I wrote this as I imagined a sub driver would after 7 DEC. 1941. It is not my intent to offend in this or any other posts after this one. I seek authenticity of the era in which these submarines sailed, good and bad. The views therefore are not my personal views.)

(Like Many Commanders before me.....)
As of 12 December 1941, S-32 is over due and presumed lost. Condolences go out to the families of the crew that we honor during wartime. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten.

S-41 Has been sent after the attack on Pearl Harbor to patrol the straits between Formosa and Luzon. Admiral Hart and high command of the Asiatic fleet wish to bestow the best of luck upon the boats operating in these areas.

Weather is abysmal. Continued to sail on the surface to provide fresh air to the crew. In the previous days, sank two marus's with gunfire. Engaged a heavily escorted convoy on the following day. Put two torpedoes into the side of a Tone class cruiser. While it was burning, I am not certain that it sank. Five destroyers were tasked with driving us off. They did their job well.

We are heading to the straits between Formosa and China. Hopefully the pickings will be good before fuel forces us to leave the area.

Rain continues. Lookouts repor possible sighting off to starboard. Continuing on current heading until we have firmer confirmation of enemy ship's course and position.

Straits of Formosa socked in with heavy rain. Visibility nil. Pure luck will show me the way to a Jap convoy. Poor luck since meeting the freighters off Luzon.

Addendum:

Bad weather continues....No action expected until weather lifts and visibility improves. Have released crew from normal anti-aircraft watch. Am still convinced straits of Formosa are ripe for the pickings. Bad weather hampering evaluation.
