http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3377107/Mary-Lambright-s-truck-destroys-Old-Iron-Bridge-Paoli-Indiana-Christmas.html
Ex-Amish truck driver destroys historic bridge by driving her 30-ton trailer across it - because she got her math wrong and didn't know she was FIVE TIMES over the weight limit
Mary Lambright, 23, made the 1880 historic bridge collapse on Christmas Day in Paoli, Indiana
Iron bridge had a weight limit of six tons - her vehicle and trailer weighed about 60,000 pounds - or 30 tons - at crash
Lambright told police she didn't know how many pounds were in six tons
No injuries, but the bridge collapsed under the weight and was destroyed
That's a bad way to start your driving career!

But now, a new federal regulation is making him feel as if that freedom is being taken away. Underfinal rules published this month (https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/hours-service/elds/electronic-logging-devices), he and more than three million other drivers have until the end of 2017 to buy and install an “electronic logging device” that connects to his engine and broadcasts his speed and location to the shipper, replacing the log sheet that truckers have kept for decades.

Yahoo News reported that the trucking industry is getting involved in trying to stop human trafficking in the United States. Ohio State Highway Patrol Captain Mike Crispen said that those traveling on our nation’s highways see things all the time that others don’t.
“People driving down the road see stuff all the time that the rest of us aren’t seeing.”

Neal, your picture reminds me of working FEMA after hurricane Sandy. We were running bottled water into Long Island. 40k plus/load as running FEMA weight restrictions and drive time hours are sometimes waived. Well, low bridges are never waived(:haha:). One of our brokers topped a bridge and snapped the 53' van into a V shape. 40k plus bottles of water everywhere. Two cranes to get the trailer out from under. Total loss.

When I first started driving, I was hyper alert to everything, every sign and bridge. But after days and days of driving, you sort of get in a groove. I can see how nit could trip someone up. You would probably notice and observe the sign... but then again, you may be off in a different world. Driving is a tough job, demands a lot of attention.

Oh, I have a lot of topped truck stories. One was the first day for a driver in a brand spanking new straight truck. 22 foot box returned as a flat bed. :-?
Driving is not for me. Yes, it certainly takes concentration to wrestle the rig down the road. Specifically when surrounded by morons in cars believing these rigs can stop on a dime. Most of my fleet is aging(meaning my drivers) and many turn in the tractors/straight trucks and purchase a Sprinter. Less hassle and expense.

Less hassle with a Sprinter than running a tractor/trailer for several reasons:
1. Cost to operate is much lower (Fuel/tires/tolls/new truck payment, etc)
2. Can park just about anywhere(not regulated to truck stops)
3. Not regulated in run/drive time hours
4. Easier to handle/negotiate roads and such
These are the reasons my drivers up there in age switch to a smaller vehicle. They have semi-retirement on the brain.

I have a team with a Mercedes Sprinter. Spends a lot of time in the shop. I would keep away from the Mercedes for now. I can not comment on other trucks.
My singles/teams in Sprinters do very well with me.

Govt cannot be bothered to enforce Federal drug laws and immigration in some states, but they will work themselves to death to harass and fine working truck drivers for 1 mph over a speed limit. :/\\!!

Seat belts I understand due to all of the wrecks law enforcement see with people that didn't have one on, but 1 mph over is just frustration over the state or county budget not being able to pay pay increases.
Our local Sheriffs get paid $65,000 a year and I have never seen them give a speeding ticket, but boy those highway patrol boys do. They hide, they operate in pairs, they stopped me for not having a seat belt on at a stop sign when she (that's right I said a she) went by me. So I put it on to go past her as she was now stopped on the side of a curve.
She turns on the red and blue lights even though I had it on by now and pulls me over. I complained and she said well I saw you at the stop sign and you didn't have it on then. :nope:

Actually it will apply to all drivers...somebody warn Armistead.!:D I recall Ohio was particularly nasty to interstate truckers going over 55-mph; and I had a radar detector in the good old days (late 70's)-illegal in Virginia where they were confiscated THEN RESOLD -big scandal. Occasionally I try one of the newer ones from Radio Shack...man there's a lot of radar out there! I think it saves a few bucks. I one instance, the officer stopped ol' leadfoot me: said he "got me on radar" and I pointed to the detector on the windshield and he just folded his ticket book shut and wished me a pleasant evening-it was 2AM in the morning and I was returning from a callout. ATTN QuatroBBY: that's a good stop: "Click-it or Ticket":O: signs abound in CA. And on the numerous first arrivals I've been at with gruesome scenery: It cost U nothing to buckle up and may cost you everything not to. I'm no saint myself and have to remind myself on short hops to the store: I'm 65 and shouldn't be that stupid. Also the sheriff's are probably not interfering with the Highway Patrol's highway provenance. One agency does not customarily tread on another's turf although as 'peace officers' they have the option to do so anywhere in the state.

That is the first rule of defensive driving and nothing in 42 years of getting paid for being behind the wheel has altered my conclusion. Including last night while out on a work call! While returning home late, a vehicle driving erratically in excess of 70 mph in the dark was showering huge sparks for a hundred feet and wobbling badly. As I attempted to pass I noted a young lady with no front left tyre-just the bare rim causing the spark shower! oddly a '05 Corolla exactly like mine- with front wheel drive! I turned on the interior dome-lite- got her attention and motioned her to the shoulder of a busy highway, pulled in behind, and called 911. She was quite upset, crying and incoherent-out of all proportion to a routine flat tyre problem IMHO. After nearly an hour detainment-making sure she did not exit her vehicle on a hazardous roadside, the CHP arrived. Two young officers: they field tested, breathalysed and handcuffed the young lass. The DUI will seem a light case and the lesser of two evils: she would have killed herself or others within a few more miles at that speed on a badly disintegrated rim. The roadway in that area, until a recent just completed and costly renovation, was called Blood Alley.
Well the wheels of justice took their time but the young lady finally got her day in court today(13 months later) before a jury of her peers! Both the defense and prosecution subpoenaed me for the prelim and the 2-day trial and I got to hear the recording of my call to 911 ( Squeaky me: I should join the Vienna boy's choir) from over a year ago. Basically I prevented both a major canyon fire (bone dry windy conditions with all fire signs in the RED) and a head-on collision from a missing LEFT front tire on a rapidly disintegrating left front rim. The chase at 70+ mph was over 4 miles! I still don't know the verdict, as I left immediately after testifying. As the only witness and essentially the 'detaining officer', the judge, both attorney's thanked me; as did the CHP officer "for a great night" and, surprisingly, also the mother and the young lady on trial-apparently she is an only daughter....:shucks:

We grow tired of stories like that, Aktung. :03::O: Agreed!:D but that 8 mile long narrow steep grassy canyon has burned on two previous occasions with livestock, melted plastic ranch fences and heavily wooded private residences. The young lady's initial heavy spark episode (of four?) obliterated my windshield/night vision from 3-4 car lengths back!! The blood alley 4-lane commute corridor has enough roadside shrines alongside it to those previously killed there...hence my bothering to intervene to prevent foreseeable harm. After the Lake county disaster (in Fireftr's thread) just north of us-just four months later-with 1200 buildings, two towns, and four dead;https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a0/Valley_Fire_California_CALFIRE.jpg a fire is the worst thing out here; usually started from vehcle exhaust pipes, lightning strikes, stupid campers...or causes unknown. EDIT: EGAD!:k_confused: I spoke too soon; this AM's local paper: just five miles north at Anqwin (a small mountain hamlet) 'Tis the fire season...already:down: Sunnyside Road and Deer Park Road, which was reported at 12:05 p.m., was contained to 12 acres by 3:23 p.m., according to a Nixle Alert sent by the Napa County Office of Emergency Services. Forward progress had stopped, according to the alert. There were no evacuations, and all roads in the area remained open. Suzie Blankenship of Cal Fire said that 13 engines, six air tankers, five water tenders, three crews, two dozers were being utilized.http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/napavalleyregister.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/a/69/a69d5ea0-ce9a-5007-8a67-78a5e74cf5ec/576472a929c17.image.jpg?resize=1200%2C798

With Uber Freight, Travis Takes on Trucking (https://www.wired.com/2017/05/uber-freight/)
This could be really big, where Uber steps into the arena as a freight agent and drives up competition. Truckers win.
IN ITS QUEST to dominate transportation, Uber dreams of the day when everyone gets around in flying cars and self-driving taxis. But its plan doesn’t hinge entirely on a robo-revolution. Today, the delinquent decacorn of Silicon Valley announced Uber Freight, a bid to bring the ride hailing model to trucking.
The service, which quietly launched in Texas late last year, connects truckers with stuff that needs trucking, much like the app connects drivers with people who need driving. It’s like Uber, but for freight.
And it gives the company a way into an industry that touches 70 percent of American goods. “We’re going for that magical Uber experience,” says Curtis Chambers, one of the company’s highest-ranking engineers. And, of course, that magical Uber revenue.
With the Uber Freight app in hand, drivers can find loads sorted by destination, deadline, and required equipment (a refrigerated trailer, for example). When they find one that suits them, a few finger taps on their phone confirms the job. Uber promises to pay them within a week or so of delivery, so drivers don’t find themselves waiting for customers to cough up cash. To ensure the people hauling all those chickens, or TVs, or whatever, actually know what they’re doing, Uber requires drivers to hold a commercial license, possess a clean record, carry the required insurance, and adhere to federal regulations.

Uber is also into self driving trucks in the future.
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/feb/16/self-driving-trucks-automation-jobs-trucking-industry
In April 2016, Uber announced the acquisition of Otto, a San Francisco-based startup that has developed a kit that can turn any big rig into a self-driving truck.
The Otto technology enables complete autonomy on highways: trucks can navigate, stay in their lane, and slow or stop in response to traffic conditions completely without human intervention. Otto’s equipment currently costs about $30,000, but that is certain to fall significantly in the coming years.
Otto is by no means alone. Massive automated vehicles are already commonly used to move materials for the Australian mining industry.

What Does Tesla's Automated Truck Mean for Truckers? (https://www.wired.com/story/what-does-teslas-truck-mean-for-truckers/)
On Thursday night, Elon Musk rolled out Tesla's biggest gizmo yet: a fully electric semitruck. The Semi can go a whopping 500 miles between charges, hauling 80,000 pounds along the way. And it can sorta, kinda drive itself—on highways, anyway. The truck comes with Enhanced Autopilot, the second generation of Tesla's semiautonomous technology, equipped with automatic braking, lane keeping, and lane departure warnings.
Well, interesting, 500 miles between charges is about right for HOS. But, I wonder if HOS will change if the driver does not have to be in control of the vehicle?

Walmart plans to test Tesla's electric tractor trailers and has already ordered five of them, the retailer told CNBC on Friday.
"We have a long history of testing new technology – including alternative-fuel trucks – and we are excited to be among the first to pilot this new heavy-duty electric vehicle," the company said in a statement to CNBC.
Now if Walmart can just keep them from falling asleep at the wheel ... :o

Uber’s self-driving trucks are making deliveries in Arizona
Uber announced today that its self-driving trucks have been operating in Arizona for the last couple of months. The company said it has two main transfer hubs in Sanders and Topock, but other than that, Uber is being pretty tight-lipped about the operation. For instance, it hasn't shared how many trucks are in use, how many miles they've driven, what they're shipping or how often drivers have to take over for the autonomous system, and has only said that the trucks have completed thousands of rides to date.

April 26 (UPI) -- Ford Motor Co. will cut out all but two of its passenger cars for its North American lineup due to waning demand for the vehicles, the company said.
The motor gamut of trucks, sport-utility vehicles and crossovers will remain -- but Ford's Fiesta, Taurus, Fusion and regular Focus models will disappear within the next two years.
The automaker said by 2020, almost 90 percent of the Ford portfolio will comprise of trucks, SUVs and crossovers and commercial vehicles.
The only two cars that will stay in Ford's North America market -- the Mustang and Focus Active, a hatchback that will debut next year.

Anheuser-Busch, which ordered 40 electric semi trucks from Tesla last December, on Thursday upped its bet on a green fleet by placing a substantially larger order with a competitor.
The beer company said it plans to buy as many as 800 trucks from Nikola Motor Co. Where Tesla uses batteries in its powertrain technology, Phoenix-based Nikola uses hydrogen fuel cells. In both cases, the vehicles generate no tailpipe pollutants.

:Kaleun_Salute: I'm constantly getting checked out for macular degeneration myself; one reason I retired last year was blue /white headlights at night generally on single lane highways giving me instant headaches... https://blog.greenflag.com/2017/why-are-modern-cars-headlights-so-bright-we-explain-whats-causing-more-drivers-to-be-dazzled-at-night-and-how-to-prevent-it/ (https://blog.greenflag.com/2017/why-are-modern-cars-headlights-so-bright-we-explain-whats-causing-more-drivers-to-be-dazzled-at-night-and-how-to-prevent-it/)
Are car headlights getting brighter? Ask around, and you’ll find it’s a common grumble among anyone that drives, especially those that frequently take to the road first thing in the morning or at night.
They’ll tell you that on an unlit road, especially one with crests or undulations, oncoming traffic can leave them feeling as if they can’t see.
During the winter months, the problem is exacerbated. Fewer daylight hours mean cars spend more time with their lights on. And the latest technology on modern cars has introduced superior lighting power to even the average family car.
While that’s great for any driver of a car with powerful lights, it’s not so safe for drivers of oncoming vehicles. They can find themselves blinded by the brilliant light from the latest systems.
Is there anything dazzled drivers can do? And will headlights continue to get brighter?
What’s the problem?
It’s a fact that car headlights are getting brighter. The motor industry is continually boasting about how it has improved lighting performance, to keep drivers safe. Meanwhile, eye specialists say the downside is that this actually impairs the vision of increasing numbers of drivers in oncoming traffic.
At the same time, as drivers age (69):yep: the eye’s lens and cornea effectively become misty, and as bright light in shone through them, drivers suffer something called ‘disability glare’. Studies have shown it can take up to 10 seconds to recover from the phenomenon. Not good when carrying a Beretta .9mm:oops:
According to police data, accident investigators report ‘dazzling headlamps’ as an influence in 10 fatal crashes, nearly 70 serious accidents and more than 250 other accidents.

That big Peterbuilt would be awful getting in and out of NY, Boston and Philly. I created gridlock in lower Manhattan in a three-axle 1-bunk Freightliner one afternoon in '78. Parking is so tight, everyone parks to the very end of the block, disallowing any big-rig to turn the corner to get back to the only bridge outta the Big Apple. The trailer simply won't cheat through the turn. My newby co-driver and I sat 3+ hours till 5PMish until workers started driving home, with our flashers on; cops kept asking if we could move...and we heard on the radio: "...and there is gridlock in lower Manhattan..." When it comes to big rigs... size matters not luxury...:O: and all that gadgetry just means more downtime for repairs.
I thought the same thing when I saw the Peterbilt. Old truckers never die they say, they just get their Peterbilt. :yep: I thought the big Peterbilt with extended sleeper might be better suited for episodes of " Ice Road Truckers ."
Then again, I don't think carrying that much extra weight over the Ice roads would be a good idea either. I agree the extra gadgetry isn't really needed but if staying in your truck for extended periods is part of the plan, then some comforts are nice. The Peterbilt was built for that. One thing I would want is a GPS system to navigate alternate routes and quickly find destinations.

I'm kind of curious what some of the requirements are for where and the company you drive for?
I have been driving for many years now (long haul) but the company I work for is going under and I have to find something new. I recently did a background check for my renewal and was wondering if I would have to do a background check for every company I apply for? I read on this website that some companies can use the same check but only in certain situations https://backgroundcheckrepair.org
Bottom line is I've been doing this for years and I hear there's a big issue with finding drivers to come work but I'm here and ready and I've actually been having some trouble finding a good company that pays decent and seems like they'll be around for a while.
Thanks for the help.

I seriously doubt you will have any trouble finding a new company to drive for. Most transportation companies are looking for good drivers and if you have driven as long as you have, then I have no doubt that you are a good driver and may well be what they are looking for.
Look into Wal Mart and also Swift Trucking. Both have a decent reputation and also pay well from what I have been told. I think they both pay more as well for seasoned drivers. Check them out. I think both companies may offer you and your family what you are looking for and need. I'm sure there are other good companies as well.
Good luck and all the best in the New Year.

Markus Semi trucks can get up to 80,000 pounds for gross vehicle weight with both tractor and trailer, according to most weight restrictions. That’s typically divided with up to 12,000 pounds over the steer axle and 34,000 pounds over both the drive and the trailer tandem axles.
Oversized loads can exceed those amounts with special permits. A semi truck is about 70 feet long, combining the tractor and trailer.
The length can vary considerably based on:
Type of tractor: Sleeper cabs, which have a bed inside for drivers who haul farther away from home, are typically about 20 feet long, though each manufacturer and spec can alter that.
Type of trailer: A standard dry van trailer is 53 feet long, which overlapping a few feet over top of the tractor, makes the unit about 70 feet. Double or pup trailers are typically 28 feet in length, while intermodal containers can be 20 or 40 feet. Tanker trailers, flatbeds and a wide variety of other trailer types are available, all in slightly different lengths.
State requirements: Companies can often get creative with the length of equipment for specialty freight needs, but each state has different regulations as well for overall length. Back in the '70's, my three year career in a OTH three axel tractor was 65 Ft and 80,000 Lbs except for the "iron Curtain' of mid-continent states which limited gross weight to 73,280 lbs creating a continental crossing limit down to that weight ....but that has been eliminated. Considering how high transportation trucks ( 18 wheelers ) stand, driving with high beams would blind oncoming drivers and therefore illegal to do so in the U.S. High beams are permitted with those trucks, light trucks and cars when no one is traveling toward you within a certain distance.

MarkusAhh my bad; the use of high-beams is governed by politeness more than law, which there are. Bearing in mind that a semi's headlights are higher than a auto's, avoiding blinding any oncoming driver or glaring some poor low car driver from the rear by his (three) mirrors is to be avoided. If there was no traffic on the long frigid sub-zero I-80 stretches across Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and Nebraska, where the lead driver does the driving instead of the newby codriver, just outta truck-school, the highbeams are very useful for catching retina reflections of bison, elk, moose, loose cattle, mustangs, antelope and deer-literallly in the headlights:o...in time to blast the air-horn to prompt them off the asphalt. 1200 lb.+ Moose hits are particularly bad on aluminum Freightliners at 70 mph...no 55 'bout it!:yep: Squirrels, raccoons, possums, rabbits, prairie dogs, feral cats, coyotes, armadillos,...and one sheepdog & a woodchuck are MINCE meat without an 80,000 lb. big-rig swerve's reprieve! On a given occasion, desperately needing water for an overheated radiator after a long climb up Parley's Pass, Utah in the truck lane, I could literally walk on the mouldering carpet of roadkill'd wildlife that had staggered off the lethal freeway(several seasons worth imho) down to a mountain stream 500 yards for a bucket of water!

You are very welcome, Markus. If aktung is coming toward you, you can blind him with your high beams, Markus. He is a good sport and won't mind. :D
Actually, all 50 states have varying rules regarding high beams and distances but pretty consistent on not blasting people with high beams and it's a law as well as a courtesy.
High Beams
High beams must be dimmed when approaching traffic is within 500 feet.
High beams must also be dimmed when following within 200 feet of another vehicle.
https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/headlight-use-laws-for-all-50-states
As stated, the distance on overtaking vehicles can vary between 200-300 feet in various states.

For curiosity: does "high beam" refer to roof-mounted additional lights, or is it refering to ordinary headlights mounted in or at height of the bumpers that in every sort of car can be switched to a brighter mode and in German would be called ordinary "Fernlicht"?
Dictionary fails me.
Ordinary "Fernlicht" use is regulated in Germay pretty much the same way as described above for the US. Probbaly the same way in any Wetsenr country, I suppose.
I sometimes curse when bicycles meet me during rides in darkness with new superbright LED front lights - and have them not correctly callibrated to slightly point down, but horizontally or even upwards, into the face. Its insane how these can blind you as well nowadays. Its nerve-killing how stupid some people are... Best is that way they do not see the road ahead themselves - all that expensive light power - in vain!

In the U.S, " high beams " here refer to basic headlights with a secondary filament or projector that is aimed higher and usually, a higher wattage. "
The roof mounted lights are usually for " off roading " and not legal for street use.
Usually, new cars and most trucks have " driving lights " mounted in the grille. They can also be the " fog lights " variety.
We just refer to them as auxiliary lighting.
Sorry Friends I was a little to hasty with my answer-when it comes to this high beam light.
Reason for my answers so far, was what I remembered what my Elder sister have told me a few times. High beam shall always be used on freeway
(Use to say to her: So it's ok that I shall be blinded by another cardriver who comes behind me-Her answer: You just concentrate on your driving).
Some hours ago I came to think about the traffic law-what does this say ?
Not to translate all of it-It says high beam should be used, but you are not allowed to blind another cardriver.
(Since it sounded like the one they have in Germany, I wonder if these traffic rules are regulated via EU ??)
Here in Denmark high beam is called fjernlys.

Commander Wallace,
thanks for the thorough explanation. Use of roof lights is not permitted. Use of constant Fernlicht/high beams is not permitted in Germany, too, only in intermittend intervals when there is no other traffic nearby, and outside of villages or cities.
Got another traffic law question.
When I hold in the queue waiting for the lights turning green It happens that the car/truck in front of me start to drive and turn right.
Is it allowed to make a right turn even when it is red ??
Here is some info about max length a truck are allowed to have
"
In Denmark, the maximum legal length for a semi-trailer train is 16.50 m, however, 18.75 m for articulated buses. Modular vehicles up to 25.25 meters in length are permitted on Danish motorways and certain connections to industrial areas, bridges and ports

In the U.S, you can make a turn on red provided you come to a complete stop and scan any streets / road entering the intersection and the roadway is clear. That is provided there isn't a no turn on red sign posted. If there is, it is usually because the opposing flow of traffic has a green arrow allowing movement. In that case, you can't turn on red. If you have a red light and legally allowed to turn, you must still yield the right away to vehicles entering the roadway / intersection which are operating under a green light or arrow.
Btw Skybird, you are very welcome. I'm glad I could help.

In Germany you can turn right at red traffic lights if the traffic light house has a small green arrow sign pointing to the right. So, you need this sign to get an explicit permission. If there is no sign, then you better dont do it. Right of way has to be granted to crossing traffic, however.
Interestingly, as I recall it, the GDR had it this way first. After reunification, united Germany needed years and years to adapt this rule, and only on a few hand-selected crossroads. Its not the norm. Many want it to become the norm. It might become the norm one day, but right now it isn't.

Well here in the United States. If a truck has fog lights or custom mounted lights that can be adjusted to hit your mirrors from behind. It is for the purpose of getting you out of the f@#$ out of the way.So a faster truck can get by. These are owner operators, their trucks aren't governed to a specific speed limit and so when you are rolling down the highway trying to pass another company truck looking for a downhill edge these guys will roll up and Blind both of you until you get out damn way. And after 8 hours thru the night dealing with those *******s your eyeballs will feel like there hanging down on your cheeks and as the sun comes up your looking for the next rest area you can park the truck. That's night driving in the U.S.A. They call us Nightcrawlers .

But maybe times have passed me by:shucks:DETROIT — Sometime next year, semis with no human in the cab will start carrying freight down Interstate 45 between Dallas and Houston.
The trucks will run on an autonomous driving system called the Aurora Driver, developed by Pittsburgh-based Aurora Innovation. The company is now making about 50 trips per week with human safety drivers on board.
The prospect of a driverless semi is scary to many, but not to CEO Chris Urmson, who helped to build Google's autonomous vehicle unit. Urmson, 46, co-founded Aurora in 2017. Q: Teslas on either Autopilot or “Full Self-Driving” using only cameras have crashed into emergency vehicles, motorcycles and other things. Why should we trust you folks when this keeps happening with other vehicles?
A: They aren’t really self-driving vehicles. They’re kind of being branded in a way that maybe is a little bit misleading. We’ve believed for a long time that using a combination of laser, radar, cameras — inventing our own even more capable long-range lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) — that increases the robustness of the system. The likelihood that you miss something becomes vanishingly small. You had to think about how the different sensors might fail and how you can use different sensors to complement the weaknesses and augment the strengths of one another so that you can actually be robust in challenging situations.

https://c8.alamy.com/comp/DGXTYX/family-of-crash-test-dummies-in-a-car-DGXTYX.jpg YIPES!:timeout: https://newatlas.com/technology/ai-danger-kill-everyone/ First off, it's an arms race; if America doesn't build it, China will, and whoever gets there first might rule the world. But there's also economics; the smarter and more capable an AI you develop, the bigger a money printing machine you've got. "They spit out gold, until they get large enough and ignite the atmosphere and kill everybody," said AI researcher and philosopher Eliezer Yudkowsky earlier today to Lex Fridman.
Yudkowsky has long been one of the leading voices in the "AI will kill us all" camp. And the people leading the race to superintelligence no longer think he's a crank. "I think that there's some chance of that," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, again to Fridman. "And it's really important to acknowledge it. Because if we don't talk about it, if we don't treat it as potentially real, we won't put enough effort into solving it." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHpenVvUEyc:o
So far Truck drivers are still needed even in the near future.
These self driving vehicle isn't perfect yet and there has to someone behind the steering if something should happen.

I guess 50 years from now-Truck drivers will be obsolete Not to worry::O: https://thehill.com/changing-america/sustainability/climate-change/563497-mit-predicted-society-would-collapse-by-2040/ That method indicated the fall will be some point near the middle in the 21st century around 2040, and so far, their projections have been on track, new analysis suggests. Using a system dynamics model that was published by the Club of Rome — a Swiss-based global think tank that includes current and former heads of state, United Nations bureaucrats, government officials, diplomats, scientists, economists and business leaders — the scientists were able to identify the upcoming limits to growth (LtG) to forecast of potential “global ecological and economic collapse coming up in the middle of the 21st Century,” The Guardian reported.
The Earth, according to LtG, has been terraformed beyond repair by greenhouse gases from fossil fuels, making the next generation to endure the “heavy legacy,” a scarcity of mineral resources and a planet characterized by radioactive and heavy metal pollution.

Definitely a headache. I used to get started every day at 3:30 am so I could be sure of a parking spot at 2pm.

In the wee hours one night in July, a Greyhound bus heading to St. Louis turned onto an exit ramp leading to a rest area in Southern Illinois and hit three parked tractor-trailers, smashing its front, crumpling its roof and ripping off part of its side.
Three passengers were killed. The tractor-trailers were parked along the ramp’s shoulder, a common sight on the nation’s highways.
“It’s scary because it can happen in the blink of an eye,” said Carmen Anderson, 64, a South Dakota-based truck driver for America’s Service Line, who recently had to park on an off-ramp in North Carolina after not being able to find parking at rest areas or truck stops.
The accident in Illinois highlighted a widespread complaint among the nation’s truckers: Parking spots for commercial trucks are hard to come by.
As a result, truckers often take refuge in store parking lots, along the shoulder of highways and on ramps, though the legality of doing so varies by location. The shortage of parking is both inconvenient and financially costly for truck drivers, and it can lead to dangerous situations when truckers are forced to improvise.

Hurray, one less debt that I'm responsible for! Truck paid off!
Old malls would make great truck stops with lots of parking, but it won't happen. :hmmm: Sebring, FL has a mall sitting practically empty with an empty parking lot. Closest decent truck stop is thirty miles north, and not that big. Restaurants and a Harbor Freight conveniently located adjacent, but it won't happen. Old diminished capacity drivers who populate Florida are anti-truck.
"diminished capacity" people suck! Especially when they're in charge. :D
