Not sure if this has been thought of before but it's the first I've heard of it.
Glow in the dark road markings have been unveiled on a 500m stretch of highway in the Netherlands.
The paint contains a "photo-luminising" powder that charges up in the daytime and slowly releases a green glow at night, doing away with the need for streetlights.

Reflective paint on roadways have been effective for years. Many country roads in the US and throughout the world us it. I'm not sure of the advantages of this glowing road lines.

Asuming there is no snow and there never have been any street lights at all - outside the city limits on a regular road - this is certainly a nice to have and add to security feature. In The Netherlands they have as much snow as in GB...
A cloudy day may not deliver enough sunshine to charge the lumination for a long night. Replacing street lights with this seems to be less genius to me.
On the other hand we could add some 'nukular' waste to the paint and make it glow by default.

They did but found the tires were melting off the rims within a few miles driving. :-?
