To be frank its the Fubuki class destroyer those things are hard as heck to nail and don't give up easily.
The ones with the propellers... :rotfl2:

They start pinging I start crash diving to 50 meters although when they aren't moving I start firing fish.
I really like using the Sam Dealey method, go straight at them (or away from them, fire 3 fish in rapid succession with a 2 degree or so spread between each from 500-800 yards. They try to turn away from the middle torpedo, but instead they present a broader target for one of the other two torps. It's hard to miss if you do it right. For best results always have your outer doors open before firing, the shots get off much quicker.
To answer the question, the ones who are inside 500 yards when I am above the layer.

Bungo !$!@$ Pete. I'd rather face an allied destroyer in 1945 while in a Type II then encounter him. I've lost 5 subs to him and i'm not losing the sixth one.

Not just those, but also the one's actively pinging and bearing down on me.

I don't mess with destroyers or gun boats, that's asking for trouble - however I did find myself once in the middle of a heavily guarded convoy with troop ships and managed to take down a heavy cruiser :D that WAS exciting but boy oh boy the escorts came flying from ALL directions :Kaleun_Crying:LEAVE ME ALONE YOU GUYS I'M ONLY TRYIN' TO DO MY JOB HERE

he's easy, just place your sub in the right position, point your bow towards him and wait, but make sure he will pass within 500 yards..and make shure your under the thermal while you wait, as he gets closer, and your boat is rigged for silent running come up to periscope and quickly fire a spread of torps, i have taken him out pretty easily that way...ive never lost a sub to him, but ive killed him dozens of times on full realism..he is a skilled one, but once you know his weaknesses you can sink him every time..
oh and just a little side note, you guys complain too much XD (jk) i took out a heavy cruiser once with an s-boat...and in that same patrol i badly crippled one leaving rabaul

I sank a Kongo in the task force that was heading towards Brunei Bay in an S-Boat once. First time I tried one out to.

Two most feared escorts
Type C..with those 6 Y guns and roll offs, things dump about 24 charges per run.
Matsu..Seems it had 3 Y guns, 4 K guns and double roll offs. Throws about as many charges as The Type class but a meaner pattern.

Japanese Destroyers are a cake walk. Bungo Pete gets killes every time I see him. Fubuki are harder if you have the Torpedo Lancher mod. I do not really fear any of them however ... it is rare I sink and when I do it is always my fault.
If I had to pick any that are more difficult than others I would say any with Hedgehogs. If the Japanese had them in the game many more would die an early death.

Who's side are you on?

For some reason, I remember the DD's of SHCE being more scary. Maybe it's because I usually play early-war in RFB. In SH4, I've been killed by aircraft more times than any other way.

Gotta agree with that one, I got a nasty pounding from a type C going through the Tsugaru strait. They seem to not go down with one torpedo either, maybe need to adjust HP on those.

You aren't going to sink a destroyer with a single torp every time.

The planes or the destroyers?
When I played Destroyer Commander, multiplier, I sucked at dropping depth charges, but I could get a good fix on the sub, I zigged and zagged like a drunk sailor then rammed the bloody U-boat at periscope depth after he fired a bunch of torpedoes at me, heh! All except one lucky depth-charging kill were rammings!
Only one sub ever killed me, it was the head-hunter named Grey Wolf.... :hmmm:

In SH2 as a sub, I felt bad killing a DD player. But in SH4, I find, I'll spend 4 torps spread on a charging DD and usually kill him, but it's a waste when going after tonnage. Those DD's are doing their job. :salute:

well for me it's every time I am not going to sink a type C with one torpedo, but most others go down in one. It's a decision though, send two, and have one less torp for bigger tonnage, send one, disable the destroyer and don't get credit for kill, send one, disable the destroyer try to surface and finish him with the deck gun... well that last one ends in death

It's not about the destroyer. As Wayne Hughes wrote: "Men matter most." It was just as true in WW2. Take a bunch of inexperienced sailors led by some ninety-day wonders, put them on the finest escort class in the fleet, and they won't be able to find their own backside in dim light. Take an elite crew led by a mean, clever, sneaky skipper, put them on an out-dated tin can, and you've got headaches, Yankee sailor boy! Don't worry about what, worry about who.

Not that hard to take out Destroyers for me, especially ones doing harbor patrol. I simply get slooooooooooooowly into position, and when he comes plodding slowly by I put a torpedo under his "stack" and down he goes...:arrgh!:

As a Destroyer I would "right full rudder" "Port engine full" (Starboard stop.)
Or visaversa.

Having just picked up SH4 about a week ago, I haven't encountered too many DD's yet, so I don't have one that scares me.
What does scare me, however, are H6Ks, flying boats have become the bane of my existence. I've only died to two of them, second one caught me completely off-guard in a storm and wasn't spotted until he was about 2nm's away (I was in an S-boat, so there was no avoiding that beating).
First one is the most ridiculous death I have ever experienced playing any SH title. My first career, first patrol, heading out of Manila in command of the S-38. I was maybe 10nm out of the harbor when my watch crew calls out that they've spotted an aircraft. I'm in friendly waters, so I assumed it was friendly (I did not know at this time that the game only does the popup for hostile contacts) and went on my merry way. I was terribly surprised when a few hundred kilos worth of explosives smashed my little boat to pieces. I guess that's what I get for clicking the 'Campaign' button before reading..well, anything actually.
I found a juicy convoy in a mission yesterday that as it unfolded, shook my confidence. I'm on my 11th patrol and to date the escorts have been easy to defeat. Get in a good position, stay deep and quiet until convey in close, go for a pop up and shoot, and get the hell outa dodge after I let the fish go on there way. I'm up to a baleo boat and its very good at going deep.
All has been good until yesterday. Most DC are not very close and I just wait out the escorts.
So yesterday, I was directly in front of the convey and was underwater a good 10 miles from the convoy (love that radar!). My guestimate of the convoy course was spot on, So I was deep (+/- 300 ft) at battle stations, in silent running mode, with the engines off as they approached my position. I was about to order "come to periscope depth" and I heard a ping???
Next thing I knew was getting hammered by 3 DE's. It was unmerciless. Lots of damage and had to go very deep (400+) to evade.
Is there a switch in capability after a certain date. I'm in mid war era now?
How the hell did they find me in the first place???

jokker, you didn't say if you're running any mods or not. RSRDC copies the AI crew skill to be as historically accurate as possible. As the war progressed, Japanese anti-sub skill and equipment improved. The stock game randomly assigned AI skill level. If you're running stock, then you may have randomly gotten all DE's with the top level AI.
I'm late in 1943 now.
As for mods, pretty much eye candy mods plus one one of the über mods(TMO I think). Not near my desktop. Using the jSGME enabler.
The whole mod issue is very complex when beginning.
Which ones, in what order, etc,
Bob

If you run the mod that has the Fubuki firing torpedoes at enemy vessels
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211399&highlight=fubuki
it gets even more interesting. I had a Fubuki turn away from me once and I thought how did I get out of that and went to the sonar station to here his torpedoes coming after me ... I never clenched so tight trying to wish us deeper and deeper to avoid getting hit.

You think that's bad try it with the Iowa mod. I've gotten sunk more times then I care to remember. Only think I don't like about the mod is it makes the Kuma Cruisers fire torps out of there guns.

No idea, as the ones that get me are the ace escorts that drop an accurate salvo right on me when past test depth (running silent, 1/3rd, and doing my best to make as small a target as possible with the hydrophone).
I usually slip away, but there's always one ace out there who'll drop them right on you no matter what you do during the campaign.
On the surface, they're all the same to me (meaning, too damn dangerous the lot of them).

Your mistake is your speed, when they dump, hit flank until the charges explode, then go silent....slow speed will get ya killed in this game.

O, I do hit flank when I know there's a deep salvo coming my way; just those times when I fail to pickup that the escort has me.
Though with saying that, the odd ace still gets you when going flank as soon as you hear the splashes.
