View Full Version : 2 Questions - Top Skippers & Replace Experienced Men?

Hey All - the first ? is an easy one, where exactly is the Top Skippers list in the office? If it is the officer's pic on the desk nothing happens when i click on it :wah:

Also, I noticed when port there seems to be the opportunity to "swap" out your men on board. To me, it seems that the "given" start-up crew has a lot of experience, ranks and specialties. Would it make any real difference if I replaced them with mostly noobs? I would like to see them go up in rank, gain a specialty, etc... as the war proceeds. Just wonderin' ... :arrgh!:

Oooops DUH - I do have a 3rd question now that I think about it - I "heard" that you can change the crew members names accessing the save files. How exactly is this done? IF it can be done, that is.

Your first question: The top skippers list is to your left of the map.

Second question: That's really not a simple question to answer. Everyone plays a little different. Like you, I like to start with an all green crew and bring them up as the career goes.

... and if your running a well made and highly crafted U-Boat the poster to the right of the map is where you'll find the Aces.

I will shift crew members to shore or surface ships if they can not handle their time aboard the boat. I dismissed my last Engineer for hysteria after a one hour depth charge attack by 6 escorts. I will see who is ashore and if their points are higher than what I have on board I will change them very quickly. I place the highest electricals at stations where sensors are used, highest mechnical at torpedo and engineering and gunner specialist at the deck gun and anti aircraft.

Every little bit helps and in case of damage I will move healthy men to replace the wounded in compartments to expedite repairs faster. Yes ... it really works.

hmm, one left of map, one right at map for the top skippers list, next time I'm in port I'll look all around the map wall then :)

Thanks for insights on crew management, glad the system works.

Ya, I know, my "slipped in" question of changing the crew's name was a mod question, but what the heck, LOL, as long as I was here...!! Next time I'll ask in in Mod section when I'm there - take care gang :salute:

crewmembers can be tweaked to your liking with special abilities added or removed to your liking in the ActiveUserPlayerUnits.upc file in your save file (to find the proper save file, match up the date stamp). The save file (if you haven't changed it) is located in My Documents > SH4 > Saved Games and the folder with the date stamp you have to find is something like 0000001, 0000002 etc.

I've found that these changes only work if you are saved in port.
