as above my start is 1939 early August, with the war not yet started is it wise to cut threw the English Channel to get to my patrol area?

I've never had an issue running the Dover Straight pre-September 3rd. I still run it submerged on principle that I don't want the Brits to know where I am and where I'm going (although I doubt this has any effect whatsoever in-game).

I've never had a problem 'running' the Canal early war, even blowing away aircraft and lone cargo ships en route. (80%/GWX - I keep the external camera and do not manually aim torps)

Surface at night, submerge during the day.
ASW Trawlers can't really hurt you as they don't have ASDIC, just creep away if they spot you on the surface. Destroyers are relatively rare,
but realize that engaging convoys in 20m of water, even early war, is a pretty good way to die quickly.

If you use the mod that introduces 'Harbor Launch' boats - for whatever reason they DO have ASDIC, and will not lose you in 20 meters of water.
You will have to sink them on the surface. Luckily it only takes a single deck gun shot.

LOL, yes I am running the Channel, August before the war starts, have Brit DD's cruise on by, marking traffic routes for Cargo ships, making reports, we are all buddies right now........

No, in August even the British are neutral, and they don't keep a wary eye on you, so the Channel is yours to play in as you please. I once paid a courtesy visit to Dover just for fun.

I don't do that any more, since I have discovered that FdU ordered all u-boats to take the long way around, so the British would not know what the Germans were up to.

I have restarted my first patrol after reading about the order's too stay out of the channel, but thanks for the advice, by the way WOW is all I can say about GWX so far, does installing Commander change enough to bother installing that Mod as well ?

Prior to the war start, you can go anywhere so long as you don't shoot at someone. If you shoot at someone, that country will be your enemy for 24 hours. Other than that, you can sail right into British ports and dock for some tea and crumpets.

Commander gives you a whole load of options....

Starting at sea, skip intro movies, simulate a realistic career length/crew transfers, use historic U-boat availability dates, randomise number of days in port between patrols, randomise gramaphone tracks, adjust water clarity, deck gun reload times, randomise crush depth/ship tonnage etc. etc. etc.

Well worth using IMHO.

Hello, longtime lurker from Alaska - but been subsimming since 1984 (GATO, IBM PC).

SH3'd for a bit after it was released, but the mods over the years never fail to re-ignite my interest in it. Currently reading "Black May"

This spring took a drive between Finland and the UK, even stopped in Laboe to check out the Type VII, the Naval Memorial and Moltenort U-Boat Memorial.

Drove up to to Bletchley Park last weekend and planning on going up to Liverpool to see the VIIC/41 they dug up off the ocean floor this weekend. Have another month before I head back to Finland, might even get a chance to check out the brand new sub on display in Portsmouth.

Oh yeah. Best part of working 90 hour weeks in the Alaska summer - is getting the entire winter off to roadtrip in Europe and check out the battlefields and war museums. Last year's theme was Oliver Cromwell and the English Civil War. This year's theme is everything U-boat related.

European friends mostly think I'm nuts when I'd rather see Normandy - or the subpens in St. Nazaire than Paris. Was thinking about checking out the Type XXI Wilhelm Bauer in Bremerhaven on the way back - is it worth it? Anyone else been there?

I hope you enjoy the Liverpool visit but tbh I don't like the way they sliced her up.
