View Full Version : Surface sim with campaign?
Hey all
Just curious if there is any surface naval sims with a dynamic campaign ala SH3/4 around? None come to mind so I figured I would ask here. I am guessing no, but figured an ask would be worth it!
Thanks!

As far as I know there is none. There was the old Great Naval Battles series and later Fighting Steel, but as I recall those were single-mission only. With those you were never a single ship, but the commander of a task-force of one sort or another. One of the problems is with the exception of the German raiders surface warships were almost never sent out alone. Atlantic convoy-raiding is fun, but most WW2 naval action was in the Pacific, and nobody sent single ships deep into enemy territory the way the subs were.
I too would love to see a good surface game, but it wouldn't be the same. Either you would command the group or be a single part of it, which might be fun but I think would get old after awhile.
The only one I can imagine is Destroyer Command. Which is basically the surface edition of Silent Hunter 2 focussed on destroyers. I understand that it doesn't have a dynamic campaign (I hardly played it myself), but is more like scripted missions in sequence.
Though I find that the SH3 and SH4 campaign is also still fairly static in structure. I guess it is dynamic in a sense as things do go different. But not really interactive. It's not like you can influence the outcome, or eradicate a fleet forever. What evolves is your own boat and crew. And perhaps some events based on time-period, but they are bound to happen whatever you do.
Thanks guys! I figured as much...
I found this mod and I think it might be what I am looking for!

Hasn't Matrix Games recently released a new Harpoon-style naval strategy sim?

Mission-based, sorry.
Thanks skybird!
Turns out that mod is just what I was after. In command of the USS Sparrow, an armed tug boat sailing around the South China Seas sinking Japanese oil tankers. :arrgh!:
