This data visualization of Air Traffic in Europe was created from real flight data. It shows the air traffic which flies on a typical summer day and highlights the intensity of the operation in Europe - an operation which runs 24x7x365.
NATS and the UK are at the heart of the operation. With Heathrow as the busiest international airport in Europe, and Gatwick as the busiest single runway airport in the world, we play a key role in ensuring air traffic under our control in European airspace is as safe and efficient as it can be.

Thanks for posting G. :yeah:

And thanks for your input Tchocky. Quite interesting trying to spot regional airfields from the odd flight in or out, and occasionally you'll spot one squiggle simply circling again and again.

One question, Isn't Heathrow the busiest in the world, not just Europe?

According to wikipedia (I know, I know, but not everything can be fake?) in both the amount of passengers and the amount of aircraft movements it's been overtaken by Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson, and Beijing for just passengers.

Can't say for sure but I think Heathrow is now in fourth ranking but having checked, I can't find a source.

The definition of the world's busiest airport has been specified by the Airports Council International (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airports_Council_International) in Geneva, Switzerland. The ACI defines and measures the following three types of airport traffic:

Passenger traffic: total passengers emplaned and deplaned, passengers in transit counted once
Cargo traffic: loaded and unloaded freight and mail in metric tonnes
Traffic movements: landings and take-offs of aircraft

The following airports make claims based on objective volume measures that are defined above:

Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hartsfield%E2%80%93Jackson_Atlanta_International_A irport), Atlanta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta), Georgia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_(U.S._state)), United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States):

Largest number of passengers annually (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_busiest_airports_by_passenger_traffic) (1998–present); Most aircraft movements annually (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_busiest_airports_by_traffic_movements) (1999–2000, 2005–present); In 2007, Hartsfield again set the world's record for most aircraft movements in one year with 994,346.

Hong Kong International Airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_International_Airport), Hong Kong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong)

Most cargo traffic by weight annually (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_busiest_airports_by_cargo_traffic) (2010-present).

Airports of London (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airports_of_London) combined, London (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London), United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom)

Largest number of passengers annually in all city airports combined (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_busiest_city_airport_systems_by_passenge r_traffic) (2010).

London Heathrow Airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Heathrow_Airport), United Kingdom

Largest number of international passengers annually (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_busiest_airports_by_international_passen ger_traffic) (2004–present). 'Nuff said: throw in Gatewick for single runway useage and England is three for five overall:salute:The gory details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_busiest_airports_by_passenger_traffic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_busiest_airports_by_passenger_traffic)

Nice

At around fifty seconds in you can see the RAF exercise area off Anglesey, little bit of dogfighting going on out of RAF Valley!

Here's quite an old video highlighting the traffic on a typical day where I work. Not quite as fancy as the NATS video :)
