Check out this post from a related thread as far as Windows 7: Here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1299491&postcount=56)
Regarding GWX, your downloads should come with an .exe file ( along with seven .bin files ), click on it and it will do the rest. Make sure your copy of SH3 is patched to the latest version of the game first.
From the GWX Downloads Page:Here (http://thegreywolves.com/downloads/)

The important thing is to have an a fresh install of SH3 fully patched. Then download all of the GWX files from that link I posted above, once finished run the .exe file, it will do the rest. It does not matter the order in which you download them.

Sh 3 Commander is a separate program. You launch Commander, use it, then when you are ready, launch SH3 from within Commander. Commander does some setup for SH3 before starting it. When you exit SH3, Commander does some cleanup. If you don't use a Commander function called auto-rollback, Commander restarts when SH3 terminates. Commander should be installed in its own folder on the root, separate from SH3.
Because it is a separate program, it does not matter whether SH3 Commander is installed before or after SH3. The Commander "patch" is not really a patch (binary changes to .exe files), but versions of some Commander .cfg files tailored to work with GWX. The "patch" downloads as a self-unpacking zip. There are different file sets for NYGM and LSH3 also. Install it anytime after you install Commander, but don't use Commander to launch SH3-GWX until the "patch" is installed.
GWX is a megamod. It is furnished as a set of self-unpacking files, but all it does is over-write some (lots and lots of) stock SH3 data files. Obviously, install GWX after SH3, but GWX installation has nothing to do with Commander. One caution: While GWX is really just a big mod, it can not be installed with JSGME and it CAN NOT be removed. To deactivate GWX, you must uninstall and reinstall SH3. Of course, it's easy to have multiple copies of SH3, one with GWX and one stock.
As always, WAEFRTD.
thanx a lot but one more question. how do I install the "patch" for sh3 commander for it to work w/ GWX:hmmm::hmmm:

The one I use is an .exe file, so it is a matter of clicking on it and the
rest is done.
Just checked, the one here at SUBSIM also is an .exe: Here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom//downloads.php?do=file&id=1421&act=down), though it comes in a compressed format. Download it and unzip
with winrar or winzip, from there you will see a read-me and the .exe file.
Install Commander first, than run the .exe :yep: As mentioned, it will do the rest.
im guessing I need to save the patch file to sh3 commander:hmmm::hmmm:
thank you thats all the questions i have for now ill let you all know if i have anymore problems:salute::salute::up:

May I kindly request the administration to CHANGE the subject of this thread?
"help with mods" really does not tell much and a newbie would not search for that and we have seen really good step-by-step answers by RDP and BBW and maybe even my summary is not too bad.
I propose: "Installation order for GWX and SH3Commander"
How about "Does SH3 run on Windows 7?", since that was the original question. No, wait, we already have more than one thread with that title. In fact we already have more than one thread on GWX and SH3 Commander.
In fact there are many threads with vapid, yes, almost meaningless subjects which I propose to have changed by the administration:
Nobody would search in threads like...
- "three quick newbie questions"
- "Noob stuff"
- "I need your opinon..."
That's true. It's also true that we have had hundreds of threads with titles like that. Do you also propose that we go through and change the titles of all of them? Most of them are long gone now, and not worth the effort.
how do I install like any mod like whats the basic way to install small mods
how do I install like any mod like whats the basic way to install small modsFor starters one should read the documentation that comes with it, or the thread where it is published. That should have the proper steps to do it. And is the source of information about compatibility. (if the maker knows enough about the inside of other mods, which is hard to do and so not likely)
Most can be enabled and disabled through JSGME. But some mods are not build that way because they are older than JSGME. There is no fixed way to do it. In essence the mods are simply file replacements. And so you need to make sure the mods you apply (through JSGME or simply manually overwriting) are compatible to the ones you did before. If you are manually overwriting files then you need to make sure you keep copies of the originals. JSGME does this by itself.

Do you know of any mods currently in general use that are not JSGME compatible? I know there used to be some, but I don't know of any that are still available. It might be best just to point them out so less experienced gamers could avoid them.
There are some, like h.sie's and Stiebler's Patchers, that require extra preparation, but these still install with JSGME after you set them up. It might be a good idea for noobs to look carefully at those, also.

Just the really old ones in general, that were not prepared for JSGME because it wasn't around yet. I figure the legacy download page of Subsim has alot of them. I don't use many mods myself, so I am not really up-to-date to what is available as mods. And I am very bad at remembering names.

Maybe your stock installation is corrupted. You could uninstall and reinstall SH3, then patch to 1.4 (if necessary). Then try again to install GWX.
I tried u. Installing the game and reinstalling it and I saved the game in my documents under c disk and it still says that the game is modded and again it's not what should i do?
And I'm also using a disc version of the game
If that matters

Ahoy, avers,
after installing the 1.4b Patch, did you remove the Starforce copy protection program?
If not, in the Link below you will get a step by step instruction, how to do it.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160118
I hope that it would help you.

Could there be some leftovers from a previous - modded - installation? You may want to get a registry cleaner - CCleaner from Piriform is a very useful tool and freeware. Uninstall the game via Control Panel - Run the CCleaner - Reinstall (not into the default path!) - Don't install any other stuff - no 4GB patch - no NoDVDfiles (no need anyway I guess)... - Start the game once. - Try to install GWX - Post the exact message if still necessary
