hi again,
a couple more questions came up during my 5th patrol today :

1) TDC's depth level:
Why's the TDC's depth level all the way going down to 25m max? The deepest draft I could find among trade ships was like a draft of 14m. Are there any circumstances where such a depth level becomes necessary?

2) Bad weather attacks:
I've sunken now quite a few ships but I've got one problem which is that I cannot for the life of me hit anything during really bad weather conditions! Like wind of 15m which happens almost all the time when close to the english coast!

Any advice on torpedo attacks in bad weather?

3) How to ask crew for ship type identification?:
I've seen in some youtube videos that it is possible to ask the crew (or WO?, i cannot remember) to find out if a sighted ship is a warship or not. First I had this pop up asking me how to proceed while also informing me if trade or warship. I've chosen to always go on with the current orders but here comes my question into play. How to ask the crew, cause so far, when I wasn't sure about a ship I went to periscope depth to let my hydrophone guy to the job.

I play on 100% realism what could mean that it's maybe not possible for me to ask my WO(?) for a ship type identification???

Any advice? :hmm2:

4) Radio msg and their relevance:
When I receive radio msgs like "do not make surface attacks west of orkney" or "the fuehrer commands all u-boats to sink all passenger ships from now on" do they have any relevance or are they just there to increase immersion? For example, will I get penalized when I still make surface attacks west of orkney?

1) AFAIK, because the torpedoes could be set that deep. Tactically, I can't think of any reason to use that depth. Although if you knew the torps' guidance had a tendency to run shallow, you might use it. (Early torps had a tendency to run DEEP, IIRC.) It's there in the game prolly because the RL TVR had that settings range.

2) Are you using h.sie's patches? If so, bad weather causes erratic torpedo behavior if the torps are set too shallow. IIRC, the rule of thumb is that the torp may run erratic if the torp depth setting (in meters) is less than 0.4x the wind speed in meters per sec. Look in Readme_V16B1.pdf in V16B1-Patch-Kit.7z.

3) If all you want is warship or merchant, the contact report, whether visual or sound, will give you that. If you want ship ID, then you have to have Weapons Officer assistance enabled. That's a "realism" (sic) deduction in stock and some megamods, but not in others.

4) In stock, you get a renown deduction for sinking Axis ships ( -10x tonnage) and neutral ships ( -1x tonnage). In megamods, the deductions are often set lower. (I play with -1x Axis and -0 neutral, based on discussion on this forum about how little penalty was historically imposed.) It's in the Basic.cfg file if you want to reset it. Other than that, there is NOTHING you will be penalized for EVER. While on patrol, you can do whatever you want. The game gives NO FEEDBACK regarding whether BdU is pleased or disgusted with your performance. Meh.

1. I don’t have any idea. To hit submarines maybe.

2. I use manual targeting mostly. My trick for bad weathers is getting close to the target and surfaced. Ask WO "Range to the closest ship". Set 500m(for example, may change depending of WO report), Bearing 0 (or 180 depending on a Bow or Stern shot) , Angle of Bow 90 Port or Starboard and Speed 0 or 1 knots. Point your UZO to the bow of the ship or just a few meters ahead. You will be so close that you will probably hit the target. Leave the rest to the storm.

3.If WO assistance is enabled from realism settings you can ask your WO to identify the target and even calculate torpedo fire settings. On %100 realism, this option is disabled.

4. Most of them are just to create an realistic atmosphere. You may continue your patrol even your U-Boat number is ordered to return to port.

neat, quick replies :woot:

So it's more of a real life I thing I guess!? Yeah, i'm asking cause 25m seems unrealistically deep :salute:
Who knows maybe the germans had underwater combat in mind???

Thx walleye, i got h.sie's manual open right now! How cool is that!!!??

:salute: !!

Yup, I'll try that :arrgh!:

Ahh! Yeah, I got my WO assistance off !! Thx for the help :yeah:

Do the torpedoes go under the target without touching/detonation, or do they miss forward of aft of the target?

If the first then blame it on the waves lifting the target higher than the depth the torpedoes are set.

If the second, then they wave action might temporarily slow down the target and make it arrive too late at the intended impact point.

If none of the above then those h.sie fixes are probably be the cause.
