View Full Version : Why are the Subsim community so much nicer than the SAS1946 community?

I asked the question on SAS1946 forums 'Are there any female members?' to which I got mostly angry, nonsensical replies. When I asked the same question here I got nothing but positive and humorous replies. They all seem so uptight. Shouldn't we be the uptight ones haha...

Not for me to comment on other forum communities but here at SubSim there is an air of understanding accompanied by friendship of what a community should be like....and that is down to each and every member here in one form or other.
Being a member of both forums I'd say that both communities have their good and bad. The difference here is the moderation and the owner of the site making it clear to all comers what the rules ar and being pretty consistent in applying them .

With that question I actually had a moderator apologise for the "village idiot's" response in a pm. I just find it a really hostile place in general compared to this place. Maybe submariners are nicer people than pilots? No offense intended to anyone. I love IL-2 as much as SH! The two online communities are so different!
The difference here is that the moderators won't just pm their comments here. They'll pull asshats into line and everyone else can see it happen. I will say there are also non mods who will also pull up asshattery and let the ducks know there place.

Pilots are a bunch of primadonas :O:
Submariners are a team of experts in a coffin. They have to work together to survive.
But what do I know. I'm not a submariner. I'm here for the gardening tips.
And one more thing, one of the females on subsim is the owners daughter and I'm not telling which one :O:

That's easy, it's Neal. He's the only site owner.:03:
Now, as for daughters...

You see, we may be slightly better behaved (controlled - Stepford Member :o ), but threads still get derailed quicker than Jim can say why-aye, pet.

I live in a giant bucket.
Edit: We derail troll threads rather quickly, too. With recipes! :yep: Speaking from my own experience here, Subsim is friendly and respectful to begin with.

Pilots tend to be more aggressive. Even the virtual variety.
As virtual submariners we here are a more patient lot. A requirement for low and slow combat. We tend to be drunk all the time too.:arrgh!:
The brig here has urine and vomit stains on the bunks. So nobody wants to pay it a visit.:rotfl2:

And then there's that whole keelhauling thing that Neal has to do from time to time. I think it's good for morale. :arrgh!:

I think you'll also find that as gaming communities go this one is a bit on the high side, the average age tending to be mid-to-upper 30s.

Maturity. That's probably the main reason I fell in with this community so comfortably. That, and the sense of "family" if you will. It's a bit more welcoming here I think than most other forums I've frequented.
Edit: "Welcome to Subsim. Pull up a chair and have a beer.", or something like that. That's the sense I get of this place.

I've seen a couple that were similar in tone, mostly either history buffs or model builders. I think a group dedicated to something other than just "killing" each other tends to be more helpful and less tolerant of people causing trouble just because they can.

There's that, too. There are a lot of common interests here.

Found it! (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=229874) Can I come up for air now? :O:

This site is also policed. Sometimes by the "official" mods and sometimes by the members themselves. Trouble makers ultimately seem to go away and not all of them are keel-hauled.
A community can't exist without standards and those willing to "encourage" its members to abide by the standards. That's the difference between a community and just a web forum.
As much as I get annoyed at GT, it is hardly the worst on the Internets Tubes... not even close.

Nope, there were two to find, now get below deck and keep looking :)

Agreed, GT is all that bad when compared to some I've frequented in years gone past. :yep:

Subsim is indeed a nice friendly place :sunny: (I don't come here as often as I used to, generally because I wouldn't know what to say in the GT xD I hang around for the games now and then.)

I'd say the general average age also plays into it too. There isnt really any pissed-off, loudmouth hormonal teenagers here. Then again, it also means the viewpoints of people here are pretty stagnant, and there tends to be alot of circular arguing. By your 40s or 50s, most people already have the values and opinions they're gonna have till they throw dirt on top of them. So there isnt much use arguing, and eventually alot of people on subsim have learned to just stay out of things and instead peruse the more lighthearted threads, like model railroads.

Sailor Steve and CaptainMattJ have nailed it IMHO.
Fighter planes attract more kids, big and little. The more mature element does run the SAS1946 site and manages a lot of activity. However, we are often so outnumbered by kids it can sometimes be like baby-sitting. Its good to see young people interested in aviation and history though. I can assure you the majority there are a very enthusiastic, yet relaxed bunch and the diversity of nationalities is also astonishing. In Admin alone we have staff from every continent representing over 15 countries. Thank goodness for Google-Translate!
The full age range of members sees many of them well into their 70s, and they can also be cranky to deal with at times! With new versions of Il2 and a great deal of modding going on, there is also a very technically dynamic atmosphere with new gear being produced and tested all the time. This encourages a great amount of debate, some arguments, but always a mature, logical approach to differing ideas.
Subsim is wonderful break from the world up top. Playing sub campaigns has re-informed my perspective on the navy and air roles in WWII. In Il2 412 we have our water looking as good as SH5 too!

My kid gave me his headphones while playing a game... you cannot believe the abuse and language these 'kids' were throwing at each other.
The virtual aviation industry in general is a decent place too, but there are the anomalies.
It's the virtual pongoes where I see the highest ratio of abuse nutters.
Was playing the old Red Orcehstra on one map (sniper), and had abuse hurled at me from every quarter, as I wasn't where they wanted me - I couldn't get there without getting shot.
Next map I examined which side they were, joined the opposite side, and sniped the hell outa them. Shoot, run and hide.. shoot, run.. They couldn't track me - they were upset!!
