took off that other sounds mod and used the no wake one and turned the volume up two clicks on the remote and its got a really sweet rumble. Let me try the idle one again. So far its much better then stock Sir. :up:
You got it with those sounds very close to actual footage of those engines. I get the best results out of the no wake version. Wish you had a no wake with idle :hmmm: that would be top shelf. I was having some issues with the first one maybe its my system but I tweaked my sound system gave it a few clicks up and it really has a nice rumble to it. Flank speed is just about all you can get without getting a hiss in the background.
As promised I will be donating to Subsim tomorrow. Even though I was told to stop spamming pictures :O: If you do some tweaks let me know so I can get the DL would love a no wake idle but I know you got other stuff going on to Sir.

Very nice! I like the new diesel sound, sounds more realistic for being outside the boat. As far as the idle sound though, I would keep that the same as when your moving. I think making it the same as the 1/3 bell would work nicely since you'd only be running one engine for the most part.

Difficult to do anything with this kind of stuff. If they had programmed it for even one stereo file per bell it would have worked better, but we got one mono WAV file with software to emulate stereo and increase/decrease volume to emulate speeds. Trainz (train simulator) for example has WAV files for throttle up, throttle down, idle, and steady, 3 different WAV files for each of 8 throttle notches - AND you can set any locomotive up to use a DIFFERENT engine sound, I got six repaints of an Alco RS-11 with different amounts of rust and flaking paint, I can use six different folders with smooth sounds for new locos, rougher for older ones, and coughing sputtering backfiring for the really old ones. I can even add smoke and exhaust flames that are unique to each skin.

Missed one; " Wish you had a no wake with idle". Read the Readme.txt, to get that all you have to do is use JGSME to disable, open the \SH4\Mods folder and make a new folder, name it whatever you want. Open DieselRoar_Idle and copy the Data folder from that, paste into
Mods\Den0's custom mod (or whatever you named the new folder). Go down in that folder to
Den0's custom mod\Data\Sound, you should see three files;
Submarine_diesel_exterior.wav
Vapor Siaj.wav
Submarine waves lap.wav
The roaring diesel is in the first, wake in the second, idling diesel in the third. Delete Vapor Siaj.wav, now you have your own custom mod with the roar and the idle but the original wake. Install that with JGSME and you have exactly what you want.
Permission to upload granted, I'm not one of them suffering artistes who fusses over silly nonsense like copyright protection for freeware. :arrgh!:

It has a lil Distortion at flank but I think with the software he uses to get it that volume brings some of that unwanted wash at top end flank. Still its very cool sound mod its nice to be able to hear the engines now versus some sound mods where all you could here was some engine and the wave spray against the bow every few seconds that was way to loud. Example would be ROW sound effects he has a good package but he updated it and add louder bad weather killed the mod imo. I would have left it alone because now in rough water it drives me crazy. I don't know who made alt engine sounds for TMO in the TMO download but those are very sweet sounding as well.

Yeah, I tried increasing the volume but get more noise and distortion, that was as high as I was comfortable with. Den0 and I were talking about hardware issues, I have one computer with a Sigmatel onboard sound chip, the other with a SB Audigy card, original DELL desktop speakers with a subwoofer, and a $20 set or $40 set of headphones. On speakers or the cheap headset it works okay, the expensive headset has some kind of noise reduction built in - with that one there's a null at 000 or 180, so you have to turn the camera slightly to one side to hear the engine at all.

Is something I would love to do, smoke and cooling water effects, but again the game is programmed too simple and too weird.
An aside here, I've been modding assorted simulators since the original Bruce Artwick flight simulator in 1984, this is the first game I've seen that doesn't have What You Hear Is What You Get - every other simulator, first person shooter, or sword and sorcery game that I've done mods for over the years whatever I hear in a sound editor is what I hear in the game. For some screwy reason when I get that Manila Bay photo recon mission where you have to scrape over that improbably placed antisub net, the volume is HIGHER in the game than it is in the editor (makes a godawful racket). All the other files the volume is about half the actual volume. Except seagulls, come to think of it, them squawkers are about the same decibel level.
For the smoke and the water spray better then stock I use this guys mod.

But you make a few valid points about the game being screwy and difficult to mod in some aspects. I wouldn't mind a Mk 46 on a surface unit but depth is preset prior to launch and the sound head won't track vertically. :/\\!!

Den0, thanks, working on another version based on an early Alco switcher that was similar to sub engines. When that's done I'll check it out.
ET (phone home) don't get me started on torpedoes, especially the ones dropped by the TBD - how in blazes could the beta testers NOT notice the animation?! Devastator flies low and slow toward the target, then pulls up in a zoom climb - the torpedo shoots out the TAIL of the aircraft, going backwards in a high sub orbital ballistic arc to splash down 3000 yards behind where it was dropped going the wrong direction. Sometimes they manage to hit anyway, but it looks ridiculous.

One of my buddies in HS-75 about 35 years ago loafing under the starboard sponson of an SH-3D antisub helicopter. That's a Mark 46 he has his hand on, about 8 1/2 feet long and 13 inches in diameter, weight about 500 pounds. Smaller and lighter than the WWII cutie but much faster at 40 knots.

Many times I've watched the TBDs come in do just that, then I got curious and watched the fish underwater...made my brain hurt even more. If the 46 is anything like the 48 in the coloring dept, that looks like a exercise unit. Am I right?

Missed the question, yeah, AUTEC in the Bahamas if my recollector is recollecting recorrectly. Exercises with dummy fish at real subs, that's where I got the nickname "Sniper", one shot one kill. I had some kind of idiot savant where I could think like a sub skipper and almost always guess where he was gonna go, so I never needed to launch two. :ping:

That's one with the original spray "vapor siaj" at full volume. Deeper bass makes a big difference, it don't drown it out so much.
Sorry I was away for abit family emergency. To be honest with you I think the idle is getting closer but I wouldnt think it would be looping so fast. More like chug--chug--chug versus speed its at now. I am no diesel pro but I know they do idle higher then drop tone under load but finding that right mix is going to be from you I cant tell really until I hear it in game like this guys idle is pretty good http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=4246 buts its way to low to hear. I like the way its coming along and look forward to Version 2.

My considered opinion is that it beats the hell out of me. If I'm remembering the details you're playing SH4 on a Nintendo 64 with an Apple/MAC emulator displayed on a projection TV using a 1958 Japanese Transistor Pocket Radio for a speaker? :har:
Seriously, my computer is 8 years old, a DELL XPS-400 that originally came with a Sigmatel chip on the motherboard instead of a real sound card. I had so much trouble with that lame thing recording and playing back I finally disabled it in the ROM BIOS and bought a real sound card. On my system the videos sound pretty much the same as what I'm hearing in game.
IIRC you said you have VISTA :-? which is probably different from XP, but check this;

To see if your sound sliders are all the same - for example the game might be using WAVE while you're hearing youtube on MIDI, if one slider is high and the other low you would get that effect.

Got a strange bug now though I think its because I have been trading sound mods out on one save over and over my helmsmen is not vocal topside with orders. He is below but not up top. I am hoping it will work its self out maybe after I dock. But they have had me out to sea for about 4mos now on like patrol spot number 8. I guess they dont want me to come back would be nice to go back and see if Radar is ready.
back to the topic yeah Vista sound control panel will not let you go in and alter levels like that to my knowledge but that program I got it is amazing the difference it made in sound on my PC.
PS My machine is not junk btw its not brand new but its got Realtek 5.1 sound card in it which arent bad. NES you got jokes I see. 8-)

Gots cooling water but no gots smoke. I need a file that RFB has, or is the smoking lamp out on the weatherdecks? We're not flying Baker and it's unlikely we'd be transferring fuel or ammo in the middle of the South China Sea anyway, so either the Bosun is drunk or I'm missing a file.
I took the chance to and it worked i dont use RFB. I was happy. How is Version 2 coming!?
I see the smoke on yours it comes out the side vents. BTW where did you place that 88 on the tower layout I have one i want to put on mine but not sure where to place it on the layout.

No, those are my own hacks - the number 88 is because whatever is on the conning tower or hull is mirrored on the other side, so one side looks good and the other is sdrawkcab. 88 looks the same on both sides. There's a decal mod someplace that supposedly fixes the mirroring problem but I got so many back burner projects now I haven't had time to figure out how to use it. Been so long I can't remember what I modded to get a late war conning tower at career start with a pair of 40MM BOFORS instead of them piddly 20MM Oerlikons, but I'll take a look and see if I can find which file it is. And someday when I need a break from all this modding and testing I'll post a tute on reskinning.
And yeah, turning around so one side shaded from sunlight I DO have exhaust smoke, but the wee snotty beasties are so teenytiny and transparent it's almost not worth the bother. This smoke is so polite and genteel any sailor would bag it up and keelhaul it, which it would probably suffer with an extended pinkie. :arrgh!:
Guess I'm gonna need to do my own tweaks to make everything in that DAT file bigger and more obnoxious, make it smoke like a 50 year old Alco RS-3 loco that never had an overhaul. :cool:
That would rock to have smoke bellowing out of her!! Man I have some messed up sound files now not getting some sounds that where there before I think I may have corrupted this save file BTW with 5.1 the sounds around the boat are different like if I look left the spray is louder then looking head on. Same with the Engine if I go to rear deck gun its like and earthquake on the deck. Taking some getting used to. And underwater OMG its loud!!

Availability dates, change the first number to 1941-12-01 or anything before December 7 1941 to have it available at 1941 career start. Late war conning tower is needed for a forward AA gun, since both the early and mid war towers still had the upper helm station which was sawed off and converted to a forward gun platform in later years.

No, they're .upc files, copy them to a backup folder, then go back to the SH4 folder and right click on one, select "Open With" from the popup window, select Notepad and edit each file like you would any other text file. If you make a m!$tAkE just copy the file from the backup folder to replace the bad one. Main thing is it requires a little tinkering, for example you change the AcceptedTypes=USLightAA to AcceptedTypes=USHeavyAA in the sub UPC file, then sit there banging your head wondering why you can't have that gun, later find out the availability date in the other two files needs to be changed to before the career start date so it's listed in the upgrade options.
As for your other problem, might want to google that sound card, find stuff like this;

Was working until I started changing files in and out today testing the engine sounds. So yeah think I messed up some sound files. Did a test on my speakers they are all working. Thats way to much hacking for me I would ruin my game maybe I could give you my teamspeak address and you could talk me through it if you use teamspeak.

Trust me kid, if you can figure out how to register for a forum and type posts you can edit simple UNICODE files in notepad. Copy the files or the whole folder to a backup someplace, then it's easy to restore if you screw something up.

That's all it is, the upgrades pack UPC says the earliest date SJ-1 radar will be available is July 1943, change 1943 to 1941 and you get it at the start. Same with the late war conning tower, change from 1942 to 1941 and get it from the career start. Save, exit, test in game, crash, SH4 has encountered a problem and needs to close. :/\\!! Go to the backup folder and copy the file or files, paste them into the SH4\Data\UPCData\UPCUnitsData folder, why yes I want to overwrite. Start game and check, all fixed like before, exit game and try again. How do you think everyone else learns how to do this stuff? Trial and error, gnashing teeth when you have to delete the entire game and reinstall 100 times per year, then you learn to be religious about making backups before you start hacking. Got enough disk space with 500 gigs, so these days I fire up WinZip and zip the entire game folder when I install a new game, so I have a safe backup of the entire thing available if I get sloppy about backing up right before I hack something then discover I saved it in the wrong game folder and screwed that one up beyond repair.

I don't use the Salmon class anymore, but this was my first attempt - only 20mm available because I didn't change the types from light to heavy, or change the conning tower so I could have a forward AA gun. Screwing it up mostly does that type of thing and nothing really disastrous, easily fixed by editing again or restoring the original file from the backup.

Hoping I don't have to do a reinstall. I lost sound files to alot of things in the game for some reason nothing related to sound card or speakers because they where there before I started testing and trying different sound mods.

If save files are corrupt I just go into the
C:\Documents and Settings\Jim Ward\My Documents\SH4\data\cfg
and delete both the \RichSavedGames folder and \SaveGames folder, all saves gone, start new career. You can also make a backup of the SH4 folder from My Documents and delete the corrupted SH4 folder to replace with the backup, good idea to do that before installing new mods or hacking files, if you have career progress you really want to save that's the way to do it. Testing mods will sometimes cause the game to crash if you try to load a savegame that was expecting something else, with sound files or textures that's usually not a problem.

This involves Silent 3ditor so it's a little more complicated than editing text files, but I'm poking around in there and have no idea what I'm doing, just changing assorted numbers here and there to see what happens (here goes nuthin, FIRE IN THE HOLE!). Changed one only exhaust port for testing, too tedious to change them all when I'm just trying to see what the results are. Even smokes underwater now.

Since I have no clue what I'm doing right now I'm not gonna bother trying to fix that, just copy the original NSS_Sargo.dat from the backup folder to \Data\Submarine\NSS_Sargo and start over. :up:

Pretty sure. I started figuring this out when I first got the game, altered 22 zillion files with no clue what I was doing, restored backups, hacked again, failed to take notes and forgot what I did to get which result.
I have Flotillas.upc altered too, but that's for the new Asiatic career start mod. Also \Data\Roster\American\Submarine\SSSargo.cfg at some point in the past, but I looked at that one and it's just the available names - I like USS Scorpion so I changed all the names to that, so I start an Asiatic career with a Sargo I always get the same USS Scorpion instead of a random choice of lame fish names.
I have changed every date in all those files you pointed out to the start date and its not allowing the tower upgrade therefore I can not get the flaks. the radar updates but the 5in does not show up. I dont know I mean I went through and look at all the interval dates and set them to 1941. Maybe the Narwhal is not able to be upgraded like that. You try it. I would be happy to email the copies of the note pad files that I edited so if I did miss something you can see it.
BTW the part 2 is sweet Sir!!!
Even did the above change in the Sub Narwhal upc still not getting anything.... Gotta be missing something....

I'll extract the original unmodifed game and poke around with a Porpoise or Gato or something, this time take notes on what does what to which and who pays the bail if the cops come.
missed this PClassConningLateWar but the 40mm and the 5in decks and radar are not showing up odddddd....
They do for my Gato now. even bow and stern decks but i cant get a crew to man the back gun so....
