Everytime I replace the stern mount with a bow mount, when I look at crew assignment page, there is NO cannon, only AA gun.
Is there a special way to get this done and be able to assign crew?(Gato class, in Pearl).
Thanks
Mike

A warm welcome “milkesn9“ to the Subsim family. :subsim:
Can’t help you with this but I am sure you will find someone here to help you.
There is a fix, you have to go into the save game UPC file, search for a phrase and delete it, I forget right now what the phrase is but it also allows you to have double deck guns manned. There is another thread about that somewhere, but it should be the same fix

Worst bug in the game, the very first thing I do when starting a career is change the cannon from aft to forward. Go on the first patrol with a stern gun and you have a stern gun forever more, you can't change it to a bow gun next time you're in port.
As Snarf says there's a way to fix that somewhere in the save game files, I just tried it now and lost the entire crew compartment picture and still had a stern gun. Gonna take some hunting or trial and error to find the actual fix, there are two folders and a lot of files for each save game in
C:\Documents and Settings\Whatever Your Name Is\My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\
Why in blazes these idiots didn't do like every other game programmers and put the savegames in a subfolder of the game folder itself I have no clue.
I changed my gun from aft to fore mid career and had this trouble, but 2 patrols later (before I went hunting for an answer) I got a NEW boat and made sure I made the switch before taking her out the first time. All was well then, so at the very least you can "fix" it that way...

found the thread, that should fix the issue

I like having an aft gun for pesky escorts chasing me. If you have the 4 or 5 gun you can make them break off their attack and sink them and get out alive.

Reading all the post regarding bow and aft guns.
I did not want two guns. I like firing a "Bow Gun" when chasing a merchant.
I started a new career.
I selected a "Sargo" type sub.
Posted myself to the "Asiatic Fleet"
In the office I opened the sub.
I removed the two "Deck Gun Crew" from the showing "Aft Deck Gun" and put them both in "Damage Control Team"
Went to the update screen and selected a "Bow Gun"
Went back to the "Crew Screen"
Now showing "Fore Gun Deck"
Moved the two crew back.
Looking good.
I will remove the two "Gun Crew" again before I return to Port. I do not know whether this will make any difference. It just feels the right thing to do!

Thanks for all the help guys.
When I returned to Pearl, I had the opprtunity to upgrade to a new boat, so I took it.
It came with the bow-mounted gun, so problem solved. (for me anyway)

A good question, and another place where the game lets you get away with things. Yes, you have a 4" or 5" gun. The destroyer has four of them at least. His ship is designed to float. Yours is designed to sink. If you can win gun battles on a regular basis, something is wrong.

Something IS wrong I've managed to "find" an automatic 4"/50 cannon with a 300 round per minute cyclic rate that fires 16" shells:haha: Sayonara Yamato!:har:
