Is there a file or a way to tweak the volume of the subs engine sound. It seems to low for me I want to here it rumble lol. Or is that something that would have to be reworked.?

got to be a way to increase the value of the sound file.

Couple tips if you're not an experienced hacker;
1. Make a new folder named "backup" and copy the entire SH4 folder to that folder. If you screw up a file beyond repair you can overwrite it with the original file from the backup folder to avoid having to reinstall the whole game.

2. Silent Hunter IV is actually Silent Hunter III version 2, so you'll find a whole bunch of files that aren't used at all. The language is also too weird for words, some are in English, others in Romanian, Lithuanian, German, Spanish, and Martian.

http://translate.google.com/#

is a good website for anything but Martian, paste a word like "druck" in there and it automatically tells you that's Romanian for "pressure".

That said, you're in for some trial and error, I had the same complaint and used Power Sound Editor Free;

http://www.free-sound-editor.com/

To open the Submarine Bell.wav and save as to overwrite other files until I heard dingaling instead of engine noise or splashing water to figure out which file was what.

The files you want are in the \Data\Sound folder;

Submarine_diesel_exterior.wav
Vapor Siaj.wav

The first is the exterior engine noise, my dingaling experiments indicated that Submarine_diesel_exterior2.wav isn't used.

The second is the bow wave spray and water swishing alongside noise. No clue what "siaj" is, probably one of the Martian files since google translate came back "sorry, I got nothing". :06:

So the trick is to increase the volume for the diesel noise and decrease the swishy "vapor siaj" noise, because what you're hearing is a mix of both files. The swishing overpowers the diesel roar, that's why it's so quiet.

Both files are 22khz 16 bit mono, but if you start editing wav files be careful to check you're not saving a 44khz stereo file as 22khz 16 bit mono or whatever. Power Sound Editor Free will display what the file is now in the upper right corner, but it won't warn you if you're about to save it in the wrong format.

This guy did a pretty good job but they are just to low in volume. I have ROW_sounds on now and they are abit louder in his mod. I would not even have the software to alter a wav file. But I see what your saying.

I tried working with those files with Power sound by decreasing the volume of the wave sounds but its not taking in game it will play that way in the sound software but when you open the game its still the same volume. Even if I change the sound in a mod file the .wav still plays as before.

:/\\!!

Den0 are you increasing the sound of the files using a sound editor? If so, when you play them back in say media player do they sound altered (e.g. first step in troubleshooting is to take SH4 out of the loop). If they are changed in WMP, then are you restarting SH4? Something need restarts, other things don't.

Sniper, siaj is Romanian for 'wake', so vapor siaj would presdumably be 'wake spray'.

Guess google translate ain't always correct, altho it beats the hell out of babelfish. When I used to use babelfish I would translate "hello how are you pleased to meet you" into Russian then check by translating ваша сестра является огромным тракторный завод back into English, and get "your sister is a huge tractor factory". :-? I put "wake" in and translate into Romanian, I get "trezi" rather than "siaj".

Back on topic, I have no idea which file or files control the ingame volume adjustments, but to make this work I had to triple the volume on Submarine_diesel_exterior.wav TWICE (600% increase!) to even hear the sound in game, then decrease the volume on Vapor Siaj.wav to about 10% of the original. Just now doubled the triple tripled volume on the diesel sound, gotta go pry the cat off the ceiling and test that in game. While I'm at this I'm gonna try setting the volume for them irritating seagulls to zero. :stare:

I have gone into the data of the main game file rasied the ext sound to triple but I think I saved in wrong format cause the game ctd I dont know where in Power sound it tells me what format its in. I have gone into the mods and changed the volume there and still nothing maybe I am not going deep enough into the files but I am not having to translate anything my computer is showing the files in english. I dont know guys I have fiddled with it a lot and not getting anything to change in game now outside of the game in the Power sound software the file changes so odd.....:/\\!!

If you use Audacity to edit sound files you will get a much better amplitude and a visual representation of the sound so you not only can hear the sound but see it as well.

It is the best sound editing software I have ever seen and it is free. There is not much you can not do with it.
