So I have a problem, I'm hoping I can get some help.

I have Silent Hunter 3 (Steam version) with GWX, running on my computer which unfortunately has Windows 8.1

Whenever I try to load a saved game, particularly after a few patrols, it crashes as soon as the loading bar reaches full. If I go back to a previous save in base, it sometimes works, but not always, and I dislike losing my progress.

Any other people have this problem?

I don't think it's a windows issue, it's more of a "Oh ffs SH3 really!?" issue. It's notoriously buggy when loading saves, the best way to get around this is to try and make sure that you aren't within 25km of another vessel. It sounds silly but if you're in an awesome high traffic area, make sure you leave it before you save. I've had to restart countless missions due to this bug in the past.

Somebody else maybe able to shed a little light more light on your problem, but as far as I recall it's an SH3 thing, not a windows thing.

Damn that really sucks. I'm stalking a convoy and that's where I made my save, so I guess that's a problem. Well, thanks for letting me know its just a SH3 problem.

If you're using GWX, just get back there for the same day and time and you should grab that convoy again :)

This crash when re-loading a saved game seems quite common - it has been covered extensively in other threads but the most reliable saves are made:

When there are no other vessels detected either by sight or on the hydrophones. (submerge to check the hydrophones manually with a full 360 degree sweep then surface again)

When on the surface.

When time compression is at 1

When in command room view (F2)

If chasing a convoy or single target, it is possible to mark the position(s) of the target(s) on the chart, sneak away to a safe distance (where the target cannot be detected) and save the game. The mark(s) will still be there when the game is re-loaded.

Hi,

After longgggg absence from Submarine simulators and now that I am retired, I would like to try SH3 again. unfortunately I no longer have my old pc's with old Operating Systems. I am a member of Steam and I was going to download it from there. I saw you post that you use Windows 8.1, which I am stuck with, but according to Steam it only works with Win 2000 or Win XP.

How did you get it to work with 8.1?

Any help would be appreciated and also where on Steam is the download for GWX?

It's a real nuisance. You might try reading through this thread, http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211574 , for some understanding about game saves. I stay 55km from land, other ships and sinkings and hear nothing on the phones before saving. If I can't meet those requirements but absolutely have to leave, I pause the game and then alt+tab back to my windows desktop.
