Hi mates,
New subscriber from Australia here. Been a lurker on the forum for years (the shame I know) but finally got me a copy of SH4 (after years on SH3) and thought I better give some $$ to the forum that has given me so much.
So a thank you to you lot and Mr. Neal.
I'm very new to SH4 and was wondering if any of the subby's on here could point me in the direction of where to start, I'm really not a fan of the game in its vanilla state and prefer u-boats but would really like to upgrade to the graphical goodness of SH4 over my old friend SH3.
Any suggestions?
Well met! :salute:

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
Sorry to answer a question with another question, but where would you like to start? There are several supermods that greatly enhance your experience with US fleet boats, and two that do the same for U-Boats. One of those replicates the SH3 experience by running a campaign from 1939 to 1945 and the other is dedicated to the Pacific u-boat war.
There is also a program that lets you run several installations of the game at the same time so you can try different options side-by-side, but let's keep it simple for now.

Steve,
Very interested in U-Boats really - still can't make the jump to American Subs - just seems all wrong! I'm sure i will come around eventually.
Can you list the mods and program you mentioned - will give them all a try. :arrgh!:

You mention your preference for SH4 and U-boats so I have moved you into what is probably a more appropriate section of the forum.
Should you feel otherwise don't hesitate to PM me and I'll fix it.

Uboats: operation monsun
american boats: trigger maru 2.5 + Run silent run deep campaign
the 'real fleet boat' and 'fall of the rising sun' mods are also excellent for the american boats.

Welcome to SUBSIM
Many great mods for SH4, especially on the PTO side. But there are a couple of nice ones as well for the ATO also.
Regarding the PTO, read up on this thread as it gives you a great overview of that part of WWII :yep:

Multi-SH4: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1110
Operation Monsun: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1097
OM last update: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1403
OMEGU: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1336
Note OMEGU is an environment improvement and has been known to cause some problems. I don't use it myself.
After that there are literally dozens of mods that can be added in, maybe hundreds. Scrolling through the SH4 section of Subsim Downloads will give you some idea of what's available.

Thanks for the message, Bubble Head! and the support, that really helps. :salute:
If you can get a copy of Wahoo: The Patrols of America's Most Famous World War II Submarine by Richard H. O'Kane from your library or bookstore, it will change your mind about US submarines in WWII, trust me. The US skippers had some amazing war patrols.
Welcome to the fleet! :salute:

Hi everyone,
Thanks very much for the amazing response. It just further solidifies why it was worth "investing" in this vibrant community you have here.
I will most definitely download the mods mentioned and give them ago and also track down the book kindly mentioned by Neil.
I had a good read of the US history posted on another thread regards the pacific theater of sub operations, amazing stuff.
Looks like I have a lot of research and playing to do!
Thanks again and once again also -
WELL MET! :subsim::yeah:

As far as the environment mods go - are they really necessary with Opmonsun?
If you do go for an environmental mod as well, which is the more supported one by other mods?
Which do you guys prefer and why?
