hi everyone,
I was curious about the silent hunter series couple of years back but kinda forgot about it but now that it just was on a steam sale SH managed to make its way back onto my radar...
Couple of questions I got which would make my attempt to get into SH3 easier:
1) I've downloaded GWX3 GOLD already cause it seems to be mandatory but which additional smaller mods should I use to
A) fix annoying known game or even mod related bugs ?
B) achieve greater realism ?
2) What's the main difference between GWX3 GOLD and NYGM Super Mod?

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
We tend to discourage buying from Steam these days. Something about how their system works makes it difficult if not impossible to use certain mods. This is especially true of SH5, but I'd be wary and ask a lot of questions anyway.
1. There are hundreds of smaller mods which work will with any of the Big 4 supermods. For GWX see this thread:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=170090
2. The supermods are tailored to fix the worst bugs, so you should be good to go already.
3. All of the Big 4 consider themselves to be realism mods. The difference is in the approach.
NYGM aims for great attention to detail in the AI. A lot of work has gone into getting the enemy to act properly and make the feel of the attack and escape as real as possible.
LSH3 puts a lot of effort into graphics: sights to see, cool things to do and a lot more.
WAC focuses on the actual campaigns: recreating the major battles etc.
GWX is considered by most to have the best overall balance: good AI, sights to see, things to do. It's the most popular of the four.
SH3 Commander is not a mod, but works with all of them or with stock SH3, allowing you to control in-game functions with one click and adding a whole world of realistic campaign funtions. It's probably the single best addition to any version of the game.
One thing you can do after a little practice is to download MultiSH3, which allows you to run several copies of SH3 on the same computer at the same time. Then you can see for yourself which one you like best.
Further questions will probably get the best response in the SH3 forum proper.

Can someone tell me what that 4GB patch exactly is? I occasionally see ppl mentioning it but really have a hard time finding out if it is rather an offical patch or something mod related...

ah thx jim! First I believed the 4GB patch was an update by ubisoft or something for people with older versions of the game but it now seems that it's actually refered to 4 GB of RAM, huh?
