Hey guys, I used to frequent this place many years ago (more of a lurker than anything) and I remember the subsim guys being one of the most helpful online communities ever! So I am here in the very early stages of a history degree final year project to ask for pointers.

Basically, I'm doing my final year project next year, and I wanted to do it on either American submarine doctrine between '41 and '45 or German u-boat doctrine between '39 and '45. Trouble is my professors shot these ideas down as I don't have any primary source documentation to base my work on. Since the primary source stuff on the u-boats will be in German, I've decided to try and dig up original documentation on American submarines.

So I was hoping a few chaps here might point me in a good direction to get American WW2 submarine primary source material that may be online in archives or such. Things like Patrol Documents, AARs, published letters or whatever you think might be helpful. It'll need to be online as I can't travel, I live in Ireland and couldn't afford to go to the states (recession and all)

Bear in mind too, I haven't really looked around yet myself much, I thought I would ask here as a first resort, given how knowledgeable you guys are when it comes to subs.

Cheers guys!

Where are you located? Are you near Washington DC? We have the archives and the LOC here.

Cheers guys, and thanks dread knot that's a nice resource, exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. Was gone for a few days there, I'll probably begin collecting sources proper in about 4 or 5 weeks to see what I can get done over the summer.

Rep. of Ireland, so traveling to the USA isn't really an option for me.
