Hi

Anyone know why I cannot select between HE and AP, HE appears to be the only available ammo?

I have TMO 2.5 and RSRDC

Thanks

Andy

Normally you just click the ammo you want with your mouse.

From the TMO manual:

3"/50 Caliber Deck Gun
Max Range:
14,000 Yards
Ammo:
180 HE / 13 lb Shells
Availability:
Always
This gun was original equipment on most of the early fleet boats. Originally developed for surface
ships, it was adapted for submarine use with only minimal modifications.

4"/50 Caliber Deck Gun
Max Range:
16,000 Yards
Ammo:
150 HE / 33 lb Shells
Availability:
1942-06-01
A large number of fleet submarines were re-equipped with this deck gun. A former surface ship gun, it
was better in regards to shell size and range.

Look like Ducimus removed all other ammo, other than HE for the deck gun - i don't think AP was available to subs, so it's probably a realism thing!

It's my understanding that an experienced captain did have some say in the matter, but for the most part a submarine has no use for an armor-piercing shell. The smallest ship to carry armor of any kind is a light cruiser, and if you try to take one of those on in a gun duel you deserve what you get. :dead:

Both RFB and TMO removed the choice for using anything other than HE shells. As Kaleun said...for the idea of realism.

As Sailor Steve points out, the Captain of the boat usually could decide what gets put on the boat, and what does not. I like the idea of choice, so I made the Anti-Aircraft shell "explode" in mid air giving you the appearance of shrapnel. Kind of fun to "paint the sky" for incoming planes:

Flack guns on submarines aren't realistic, but neither is game time compression!

I didn't know there was time-fuzed 20mm ammunition.

I'm surprise the game has any provision for air-burst rounds. It does look nice, though.

Quick research shows "maybe". The Germans had a 2 cm (20mm) tracer shell that exploded 5 seconds after firing, but it's not clear whether that was intended as a blast frag to damage aircraft or a self destruct mechanism to reduce damage to objects on the ground (what goes up mist come down, a lot of the Al Jazeera pics of mosques being "bombed by evil Americans" during Desert Storm was actually AAA shells falling from the sky and hitting buildings).

One article mentioned the 3 inch being the smallest that the US Navy could fit a proximity fuse to, they gave up trying to add it to the 40mm Bofors. Whether the Bofors or the Oerlikon had time fused explosive shells or not I dunno, after 20 minutes of googling I gave up.

I know the Bofors had them, not sure about what ammunition the subs had. Having timed fuzed shells does one little good without having the fuze setting mechanisms to go with them. The self-destruct tracer type for the 20mm would make sense.
