This exercise has caused a bit of media attention on China's naval build up and their focus on the Indian Ocean.

They work fine but we've no one to crew them. Apparently the RAAF was monitoring the exercise round the clock.

I could be wrong, but didn't Japan do the same thing before they attacked USA. Held many exercise near other countries.

Meaning countries which is nearby Japan.

They've been holding exercises all over the place, the PLAN is an up and coming navy, it needs its practice. Doesn't mean it's going to go all IJN on Darwin.

No one here sees it as anything other than a muscle flex to fly the flag. We've been exercising in their backyard since the end of WW2.

The PLAN is transitioning from having a coastal fleet to one that can conduct blue water operations and strategic projection through use of carriers. This will have more geo-political impact in the region; China is already trying to control all the South China Sea and trade routes, and claim the Spratly islands for natural resources.

That's hardly surprising. At the time, Japan owned or occupied most of the countries near Japan -- Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, about 50% of China proper.
