Fair question. Maybe it's because I haven't seen a whole lot of submarine based movies to include:

Das Boot
Hunt For Red October (Book was FAR superior)
Crimson Tide (Ridiculous)
Down Periscope (Ridiculous, but somewhat funny)
Run Silent, Run Deep (Ok for its time)
U-571 (Worst submarine film ever!)

I just haven't seen a movie do it better than Das Boot.

I wouldn't say its the best war movie, because those are some really tough shoes to fill.

Am I missing something?

"We Dive at Dawn" i really enjoy. British, black and white, and made in 1943 no less. Staring one of my fav. actors, the late John Mills.

Actually i enjoy U571, just watch it it for what it is, and never ever compare it to Das Boot.

The question should be maybe, Das Boot best ww2 movie ever??

Quite a few good movies for one reason or another. It depends on what perspective you look at them from.

Das Boot probably the best WWII U-Boat movie by a country mile.
