Hello everyone! :salute:

Ya, before I discovered Subsim, I'm an all-time flight simmer ranging from military to commercial planes (HAWX, FS2004, F-22 Lightning III, etc).

One day, as I was looking for another good [flight] simulator, I came across "Silent Hunter". Got myself interested in simming submarines, but what surprised me is that I get to run a U-Boat.

For the past 2 weeks, I've been tinkering with Silent Hunter III, the Grey Wolves 3 mod, SH3 Commander and its GWX config file (the reason why I registered here - to download the config file).

After a while, I'm now playing with a slightly modified SH3/GWX game, starting on 1939 with a Type-VIIB U-Boat.

Heh, when I was introduced to SH3, I suddenly realised that there were different types of U-Boats, in a way that there are several subtypes of Boeing 747's in the flight sim world. :haha:

And so my journey into the rough sea begins!

Welcome to flight beneath the waves! I too came from that world, fs9, et al. Though I reach back to F15 Strike Eagle II, AND Falcon (not 3.0) in stunning 4 color CGA! :-)

I favored SH4, but that's because of being on the US side and in the Pacific.

Welcome aboard!

Well, comparing a Type IX to a Type II is more like comparing a 747 to a DC-3.

Thanks everyone!

@TG626 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=320583): Too bad I haven't played FS2004 for quite some time now. And oh! DOS-era games eh?

@Sailor Steve (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=227416): That topic recently came into my mind, albeit VII vs IX subs. I've searched through some topics, in and out of this forum, and found that it all depends on the captain in question, much like what type of plane to be utilised for the trip. And yes, I love larger subs. :)

To all the rest of my fellow captains, thanks again! Looking forward to learn more!

Speaking of learning, here's my "to do" list. Gotta search when I got free time at work...

Firing torpedoes.... manually.
Dealing with trawlers on shallow waters (English Channel). Darn can't go deeper than periscope depth. I'm allergic to depth charges...
Binding commands with Game Commander 2 - well I have manually bound a list of commands, but I'm still in the process of binding "manoevers" (ie. dive-run silent-hard right, aircraft evasion, etc.)

Thanks again fellow captains!

I've read some articles here and out of the forums on commanding a U-Boat. I can say that I've improved in tactics. I can finally evade those pesky depth charges and destroyers with ease now. :)

Still have a long way to go with manual torpedo calculations, though.
