Hi All,
I'm running SH3 with just a couple of minor mods. It finally dawned on me that my Type VIIB has what looks like a flagpole affixed to the back of the Turm, but no flag. Is this normal, or is it something political because I know SH3 is sold in Germany and other places where the (ahem) Hakenkreuz is not allowed. I know some of the U-Boots had them because I've seen some of the old black and white photos with the boat carrying one. If such is the case, is there a mod to put one on the boat?
Just wondering.

I think they took the flags off during patrol, they were only on during departure and arrival. Not a huge break of realism for me. I'm not sure about a mod that fixes it though

I thought I read somewhere they'd be breaking international law if they didn't fly the flag during wartime, and according to a lot of the reading I've done, the germans were quite meticulous in abiding by the Geneva Convention and other international law in spite of some of the claims made against them.

There is a mod that puts flags on the boat, but it's there all the time.

Or, if you want to really have some fun there is the ultimate flags mod, which lets you raise and lower flags, pennants and the radio loop antenna:

My flag is always up in port and down once I'm at sea. :sunny:

Thanks Mate,
But I have one question about that mod. The description talks about raising the observation scope and/or schnorkel. The VIIB had neither. Or am I understanding this wrongly?
The other mod appears to be for GWX, which I haven't gotten into yet.

No Type VIIB boats were equipped with the schnorkel according to www.uboat.net. On the other hand all Type VII u boats would have had both an attack and observation periscope.

No they didn't have snorkels or obs. peroiscopes. That's what makes the documentation with the mod a little confusing.

No they didn't have snorkels..
Correct.
or obs. peroiscopes.
Not so I'm afraid. All Type VIIB and VIIC boats would have had an observation scope. This scope was used in low light situations and could be pointed up to search for planes. Perhaps you are not using this scope in game. You wouldn't be the first one. Press letter 'O' on keyboard.

Wow! I had no idea. That observation scope does gather a lot more light than the attack periscope.
Thanks Crank!

I just installed this. Pretty neat mod. However, it does not play nice with the Hitman Optics mod, so Ctrl-T does not turn the TDC on and off when in periscope/UZO.
Also I play with no external camera so it is of somewhat limited use to me.
I got the flag and RDF to work, but not the pennons. I don't know if it was a bug or because I had not sunk anything yet.
I also notice a distinct performance hit while at high time compression.
I like the eye candy but will probably be uninstalling this one.

Using Notepad, open the Commands.cfg file from both mods and compare them side by side. You'll start to see which command lines control which functions. It's fairly easy to assemble your own command lines so everything works together. I've done this for several mods, and I keep the completed Commands.cfg in a safe place. Every time I had to reload the game (which was often), I would install all my mods, then add my modified Commands.cfg plus a couple of other files I had modified and I would be good to go.
As for the pennants, I never figured them out either. Even if I did I probably wouldn't use them, because they would have to be changed after every patrol, and then only to be used for the few minutes sailing into port. Aces Of The Deep is twenty years old this year, and way back in 1994 it automatically put up a pennant for each ship you sank.

Unrestricted submarine warfare is a violation of the London Naval Treaty. It's true that the Kriegsmarine was, more or less, unconnected with the war crimes committed by other branches of the German armed forces during WWII. However, saying that the Germans, or the German armed forces as a whole, abided by the Geneva Conventions and other international laws during WWII is a provably false claim. http://www.ushmm.org/, http://www.yadvashem.org/
