As you can see nothing fancy... so the question is how to dumb down escorts a little bit in this mod soup?

Somebody will say I'm not hardcore enough... but c'mon they can hear me at "Back slow" or see my scope at 5 Km at night?

YES the SEA was CALM 4 m/s wind, and there was MOONLIGHT, but newer the less?! 5 Km???!!! :o That's impossible and it's killing realism!!!

Well that's strange, TMO 2-5 eased up on night surface attacks. Flooded down to decks awash you should be able to get within 1,000yds. But here is a link to make the AI a bit easier, yet they're still a lot tougher than the vanilla AI.

I'm saying that I'm SUBMERGED at PD and "Back Slow" , what do they have? MAD? IR optics? :har::har: And they can still detect me at 5 Km, that's about 5500 yards, and advice is to approach with deck awash?

Yes that will work... If I want to swallow a shell...

Never mind, I installed this mode and now is much better I managed to close to 2300 m to side escort I could go more but I didn't want to risk it. Tomorrow I will try to get even closer... I was short with salvo of fast torpedoes for maybe a 100-150 meters :/\\!!:/\\!! ... slow one's missed big time :oops:...

I would check your mods 6-10 and see if any of them change sensor settings. I run TMO, RSRD and Traveller mods and I can get within 800 yards and not be heard by escorts and I'd say about 3000-5,000 yards with the periscope up during the day and about 2000-3000 at night without it being seen.

Never have this problem with TMO either, but I do run RSRD, pieces of Travs mod and several of my own. The only behavior about TMO I found a lil much was the active and passive ability in calm water based on speed, so I toned that down a tad, most all other AI settings are harder then TMO. I did edit most of the crew ratings in RSRD up to veteran and many even elite. Will say elite escorts can be a lil tough...

May I ask how you got to that point, I mean, before PD and going back slow.

I'm asking this because some skippers when making contact with a TF or convoy like to "floor it" to get infront of them (and in the meanwhile like to ID potential targets, in other words... being to close to them).
Destroyers normally patrol in front, to the sides and rear of a convoy zig zagging al the time, sometimes they stray from their zig zaging course and make a 90* or a 180* turn and stay on that course for 5 min's or so then turn back toward the convoy in which case you'll probably be spotted by it.
Also, when you get ahead of the convoy make sure you're in front far enough so that when you make your attack run you're not to close to the lead escort (going flank speed is a good way of saying "Yoohoo...I'M HERE!!!!!!".

You might have been spotted earlier than you think.


As for installing the extra Mod,
When you activate the Mod look at what is alters (you'll get a pop-up) if its only TMO 2.5 you can install it last if you want to but if it alters other Mods like OTC then you should put it in before that.
I used to place it after TMO and TMO small patch before RSRDC

I wonder sometimes about how others have their mods configured. Some have no issue at all with the sensors and others jump out of their skin about it.

Like I stated above with my mods list. I have little trouble getting a good shot and wonder how much has to do with tactics and not the mods themselves.


If I have surface radar then I will run on the surface and get in front of ships and simply ambush them. I will sit knowing the lead ships are escorts and simply not raise my scope until they have past.

I just pick off a Shinano Carrier coming out of the Bungo Straits with that tactic. She was doing 20 knots and I got 5 out of 8 hits on her at 1500 yards. They were all zig-zaging and the escort got with 800 yards of me on that one with no detection.

Same tactics.. with this "lighter AI" mod installed it's possible to sneak into their (escorts ) wake and shoot sideways on merchants, but, o boy, :D they can hear well too... I risked a fast PD 45 degrees approach with "Ahead standard" :oops: and I was immediately detected at 3300 m (+-100m)... so don't be louder than "Ahead Slow" in calm water... that isn't so low speed... in ten minutes you can cross distance of 1220m... funny thing the crew immediately started to whisper the moment I was detected... how do they know :haha:

No way Hose, I was at radar depth at 11 Km, dived to Periscope Depth at maybe 10,8 Km , and proceeded for 4 Km, at "Ahead 1/3", following front/starboard escort, with observations of bearing and distance every 5 minutes, at distance of 6 km destroyer zigzag-ed into me, I ordered "Back Slow" to keep the distance, and at distance of 5 km, suddenly floor it, started to zigzag wildly and blinking with signal lights... little bit later I was under barrage of DC...

I didn't count on their Infra Red optics capabilities to see my 40 cm tall periscope at 5 km at night, sorry my bad...:mad:

Keep in minds with mods, there is no perfect fit. Take TMO, many complained it was too hard, many too easy, etc.. With any mod, the maker can't please everyone.

As far as the AI, this debate has gone on for years, numerous mods, tactics, etc., have dealt with it, but the good thing is as your skill level and tactics change you can tweak the game to your liking...that's what most long term players have done.

Just keep in mind as you deal with escorts or test you have no clue of the crew ratings,unless you set a mission up, so you may see different behavior if you run into veteran escorts.

I do think many are getting heard, not seen, more so in calm water at the ranges people list.

If an escort charges you at that distance, his speed basically nulls his passive ability, that's your chance to haul ass out of there, as he will hunt his last contact spot. Just listen or watch cams{ if you use those}, when he gets close, go silent and deep, hopefully you will be out of his search radius..

I mererly wanted to understand your approche in order to rule that out as a potential reason.

I guess most of us have had that same, "what the..., how the hell.... thats not possible at that range" moment I sure did and still do sometimes, main reasons for that are messing up, like forgetting to lower the SD air search antena and/ or forgetting to turn off the SJ radar.

Armistead is right about them not being to good while their speed is up. I just had a patrol where I had to run flank because I was trying to get into position to fire but I was caught between land, which had bunkers and the convoy.

When the bunkers fired at me I dove and the escorts came at me heavy. I went flank after dropping a decoy and dropped to 350 feet. I am running a Tambor(USS Trout). When I got to 350 I went ahead 1/3 and the escorts locked onto my decoy. I got within 1700 yards of the first merchant but the escorts were returning and came within 500 yards of me as I was rising to periscope depth and never even heard me.

I fired all ten torpedoes and got five hits on two merchants and both sank. I had been flank speed to turn to fire the stern tubes so they knew where I was and was coming firing at my scope.

Again I hit a decoy and went down to 375 made a 60 degree turn to the south and they were passing over me but never really got a lock on my location.

It was my 18th patrol in that boat of this career. I had done one refit while out at Guam and I had a bit over 53,000 tons when I got back to Pearl listed in the book.
